This is what happens when you have a stripped allen head on a cam sprocket bolt on an STI motor... it was a silly idea for them to go from the standard hex head bolt to the allen head bolt. Thankfully I had the welder around and just grabbed a socket that fit well over the head of the bolt and gave it hell. I needed to get the bolt out because the cam sprocket had a chunk broken off it so I had to replace it and the timing belt before the motor got swapped into an '02 WRX.

I figure I'll keep it lying around as a conversation piece.

Oh yeah, they will exchange, no questions asked :grin: Good tool improvisation, sockets are cheap and probably saved plenty of time trying to figure the next best idea.

I took back in a $200 torque wrench that I used for the wrong purpose and broke the internal mechanism into little pieces. They were happy to replace it, and I didn't even have the receipt as I had owned it for 2 years! Craftsmen FTW!

I'm pretty sure they wont. You welded a bolt to it, warranty is gone.

Yea I'm not even gonna try, it makes a great conversation piece and the price of another 11/16th socket is almost nothing. Although my friend who works at sears said I could bring it to hers when she's working and she would warranty it. It's a size I never use anyway, so I figure I will buy a new one to keep on hand in case I have to do the same thing again sometime.

doubt they'll waranty it, we used to do that a lot when working on old chevy picks up in the army but we actually had a designated hammer that we would well a bolt to and then cut it off when we are done lol.

Do the STIs still use the stupid plastic cam sprockets the older EJ engines use? I know they have variable cam phasing, so I'm guessing not...

The intake cams are special for the AVCS and are metal, but the exhaust sprockets are still the same plastic ones used on the wrx and even my 97 GT. Which is why I had to swap one of the exhaust ones on the STI motor before using it, it had a big chunk cracked off it.
