Thinking about a Legacy.

I've always loved the Legacy, I want a GT wagon really bad. The other day I found a white sedan sitting behind somebody's house, that looked alright other than the hood being dented in like somebody body slammed it. I talked to the lady that lived there today about it, she said it runs and drives, and that it hit a deer. She said I would have to ask her husband about buying it. I looked closer at it, it's a 95-99 L I believe, it's got power windows and locks, automatic, and needs a grille, hood, and windshield. I'm wondering what kind of problems I could expect with it. I don't know if it's 2wd or 4wd, and I really don't know how to tell without crawling under it, and the grass is grown up around it. Also, it's got some gold five spoke wheels, they look factory, but I can't seem to find a picture of another one with these wheels. I will get more information once I talk to her husband about it.

Take a camera with you and take pics of the engine and the wheels.

OK I lied. The rims are not gold, when I got close up, they are just a bit dirty and corroded and it makes them look like they have a gold tint from a distance. The rims are factory, they have a Subaru center cap. I'm going to assume it isn't turbo, as there is no hood scoop, and it appears to be front wheel drive. Unless the drive shaft is tucked away really well above the exhaust in the tunnel, I think it's just FWD. I will get some pics of it tomorrow.

the drive shaft IS tucked up there pretty nicely, above the exhaust and heatshield etc.

the biggest giveaway would be the rear diff and VC axles going to the rear wheels...

i thought all subaru were awd standard after '95...

its definitely a non-turbo.

find out how long its been sitting there.

Well I thought I saw something somewhere about the Legacy 2wd. I could be wrong though, and I couldn't tell on the rear diff, like I said, it's parked in the weeds. It was put out behind the shed. I never noticed it till just the other day, it's only two blocks from my house, and all the tire are aired up. It does have nasty black crap all over it like it hasn't been washed in a while though. I also noticed it's got about 143k miles on it.

On a side note, I was looking into buying an SVX, but never could find the owner. It was in a garage out back behind a house that burned down. After they tore down the house, they pulled that, a 90-91 Accord coupe, and a Tracker out of the garage and parked them by the corner like they where garbage.

yeah, from KC. i've been in Portland for a couple years now. haven't even heard of kcsr, but just checked it out though...

I've been in South Dakota now for a little over a year, moved from KC area.


Yeah that wing is pretty hideous. It also had two huge tips sticking out of the exhaust ports in the bumper too. Not fart cans, just like 5" round tips welded on the end of the pipes. Interior was in great shape though, so was most of the car give or take a few dents and scratches. I've heard they had terrible transmission problems though, and found somewhere that they where auto only. I can't stand automatics, I would be looking right away for a 5spd swap into the Legacy if I got it.

Already planned it out. JDM projector headlights retrofitted with TSX or TL BiXenon projectors, JDM GT dual beam fog lights, GT bumper, gold wheels, tint, 5spd, and black leather, and maybe, just maybe a turbo swap.

Got pics. It is an L, and it is 4wd. Still need to talk to the guy about selling it, but It looks like its been sitting for a couple years.

the wing on that SVX is pretty horrid..it probably burned the house down....and yeah, theyve got trans issues, cause they diddnt really beef up the trans from the 4CYL to the 6CYl, and the electronics are garbage. i also hear that the '92s are the worst of the worst. but hey, good for 5MT.

if you can get that legacy for the right price it wouldnt be a terrible find, as in $400(im cheap) give or take depending on mileage and if you can hear it run etc beforehand.

Well I can't seem to get ahold of the guy about this car. I've found a 1990 Legend LS sedan for $500 I'm going to go for instead. The Legacy will be there I'm sure later on down the line if I still want to pick it up. I will keep this forum around and let you guys know what happens with it, if I buy it. Thanks for the replies. that legacy looks like it took a hit to the front. That, and it sitting there all this time...wouldn't touch it.

Well yes, it did take a hit in the front. It hit a deer, that's why it was parked. The damage wouldn't bother me, neither does how long it's been sitting. My Legend sat for six years before I got it, I have yet to have a problem due to it sitting.

Should leave a dated note on the car in a plastic ziplock bag "$400 if you call me within 7 days". And see what happens.
