Gaskets and sealing

Hey guys,

So my trunk gasket has a big hole in it and ta been there since I've had the car. I would like to order a new gasket and replace it.

Also I would like to pull and re-seal my rear lights so water can't get in cause I hear that's a notorious spot for them to leak.

Basically where do I get the trunk gasket and what's the best method for installing it?

And,

How do I go about re-sealing my taillights? Is there a diy thread I need to see?

Actually from reading around I think it's just my truck weatherstripping that's the culprit.

It's about $47 from SGP, bit pricey buy I'll have to eat it.

Unless you can tell me of a cheaper spot to get it?

Still would like suggestions on what type of adhesive to use to install it and a good method of installing it. :smile:

You can just grab a generic weatherstripping and simply cut it to fit. Most of it usually comes with it's own peel back adhesive, or you can use any adhesive that bonds rubber to paint...home improvement stores have lots of this stuff.

Removing the taillights is super easy - pop off the interior trim and locate 4 small 6mm nuts, undo them and then use a hair dryer or a low-power heat gun to heat up the edges of the light where the "caulk" is... if I'm using a hair dryer I'll aim the dryer inside the light cavity (from behind).

Pull on the outside of the the light every 30seconds or so - things shouldn't be too hot - gloves aren't necessary.
Additional weathersealing isn't necessary under normal circumstances unless you've removed them before and had to dispose of the black caulking/silicone.

Install is the reverse.

After looking closer at my seal it's pretty haggard, torn in many places. I've never taken my taillights out so I'm ordering up a new seal from SGP.com

I'll post back here once it arrives if I have any troubles :smile:

lol i put my JMD tails in last winter on a freezing night.... the night i got em :)

i didn't re-seal them and my tails filled with ice all winter.

Got the gasket on a few days ago, pretty easy to do. Matched it up just like the old one was, trunk was initially a little harder to close but now it's great.

It's rained a few times pretty good and the trunk is dry! Woohoo!!! :headbang:
