First off, in the three years and....roughly 2 weeks I've owned my car, I have never changed any of the audio equipment. Also I've never attempted to fix/replace anything either. On with the show...

Ok, so since I got my car the driver's-side rear door speaker has never worked. Didn't bother me. The past week or so I guess, my front driver's/passenger's speakers have decided to work part time. Meaning sometimes I turn the car on and everything is fine, or sometimes only the passenger side rear door speaker and my front tweeters are the only ones that work. Can anyone help me out a bit?

Tweeters run off the same signal as the speaker. So its either:

-Bad connection from deck/cd player to factory harness
-Bad connection from the cabin to the door via the rubber sleeve that protects the wires from water
-Bad connection on either speaker or tweeter
-Defective deck/cd player

Pull your door panel and enjoy your first "attempt to fix/replace something"

I'm going to go ahead and say headunit, speakers and their terminals are pretty durable, especially factory stock speakers. If you get sound from any of the speakers, even intermittent, its the head unit usually.

it might be the speakers themselves! I think my stock front speakers are starting to go out, but they haven't been replaced or touched since the car was made in 1995. They fade in and out, worse when it's cold out. This happens before and after I got a newer head unit tho.. so.. idk, Back speakers have been upgraded and do not fade out, they're fine.

Do your front speakers go out at the same time? That kinda sounds like a head unit problem if they do.
If they go out separately every once in a while then it might be a connection or speaker problem.

Any spare speakers you can try out??? It would rule out a few things

Replace the deck, if you are looking for a decent upgrade for like $200 or so let me know. I have a few links

Sadly, I don't have any spare speakers I can try out. And it's just the driver's side front that seems to be coming on/turning off when it pleases.

Shane, I'll let you know in about a month of so, gotta get a few things in order first.

Pick up a set of WRX or STI takeoff speakers - $50 tops, and they'll be newer than your stock ones. The newer factory speakers are rubber cones, not paper like the old ones are. Although you having an 03 might have better than the late 90s cars. Still anything new for cheap is a good deal.

I replaced the ones in my 99 GT with 06 Impreza speakers. I had to drill holes in the rear speakers to get them to bolt up, no biggie, the frames are plastic, but they sound much better than the 99 OEM speakers. They are much better quality. I too had a speaker that did not work and the new ones took care of the problem. A good place to start.
