View Full Version : How do I get the GTB Limited look?

97legacyGT2.5

I was wondering if a GTB Limited front bumper would fit without any problems on a 97 legacy GT?
and how i would go about getting one?

I really like the 6" lights on the bottom of the bumper, they dont fit on the stock GT bumper, the opening is only a little under 5" (i think dont remember exactly). I dont want to go with smaller lights, i dont think they look right. I am dont want to mount them on the bumper or on/through the grill.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You can find the bumpers on eBay. They will bolt up.

okay thanks,

do you think the stock gt bumpers easily mod so you can fit 6" driving lights in the lower opening?

thanks

They're made of plastic, so yeah, you can mod them. I wouldn't put driving lights down there though, you'll lose any kind of projected light.

I am working on "kinda" the same thing. I however gave up on the 6-7" round light option.... Just too much work. So... I am going to go with PIAA 510. They are round and just under 4". Small enough to fit and they still have the round style. Basically making the USDM bumper into a GT-B LM one. Lol I am also adding the USDM fog, just for ease of install. Not really into all the cutting and drilling, and mess. Lol

do you have pics of the PIAA 510s up on the bumper

(sorry lunchbox didnt mean to pm you lol)

Lol no worries dude. I do not have pictures yet. I need about a week or two till I get paid again. Haha then I will get them installed with the USDM units. Time to fly and wait..... Lol they better pay. Haha

with the hella 500 fog lights, would it matter if they were mounted upside down or on the side??
i know the stone covers would be messed up but would the light pattern be messed up as well?

thanks

My guess would be that they would be fine upside-down or rightside-up. Sideways.... eh..... But these are all guesses. I would be removing the PIAA sheild thing anyway. it just does not do it for me. lol I am going to order them Monday-Tuesday. Planning an install sometime around the 19-21. I still want to check on the math though.... amp wise... I figured.... bulb wattae times two... aka there are two of them. lol

USDM Fog: 110w/12v= 9.6 amp
JDM Low Beam: 110w/12v= 9.6 amp
JDM High Beam: 120w/12v= 10 amp
*PIAA Driving Lights: 170w/12v: 14.2 amp

*Note: PIAA says 55w light that produces 85w lights... I am a little skeptical of that. I had PIAA's before and they "seemed" to draw more power... I might be over reacting.... but I like to air on the side of caution.

So...... (Max usage would be High Beams/Fogs/Driving lights)

Max amp Load: 33.8 amps

I have been following the "High Output Alternator" thread. My 1999 should have a 75 amp alternator. Running on the 80% rule that was mentioned, my limit would be around 60 amp load. I guess I am just worried about having a 26.2 amps to run all the other car systems. Including a mild sound system, wipers, interior lights, etc.... I am sure i worry too much.... but alteast I am thinking about it. lol

What do you guys think? Anyone have thoughts?....haha

97legacyGT2.5
10-10-2009, 03:37 PM
to be honest i really havent thought of all that stuff. i honestly was just going to get two hella 500s, mount them an hook them up accordingly.

i really should think that over a little bit especialy since i am running HIDs cuttently as my main high/low beams. i belive they are drawing 21 amps if i remember correctly. does this mean i need a higher amp alternator?? or will i be fine with just 2 of the driving lights??

LunchBox04V
10-10-2009, 06:34 PM
Yeah, one of the guys who know a little more about HID units would need to chime in here. Lol I did think about this option too. Though I think I am just going to do the PIAA 510's, but I am still worried about the 26.8 amp extra....

97legacyGT2.5
10-10-2009, 07:28 PM
yeah i came across the post you were talking about, with the high output alternators... read through it.. hopefuly i will be fine with just the hella 500 fogs.... i have stock stereo (that i barely even use). the only other thing that would draw power would be the lights/HIDs.... and thats only 21 amps.... i should be fine  lol

i actually discovered this weekend that the lens will rotate in the housing, letting you mount them however you want, just mount them, undo the screw on the front(theres only one), you may have to GENTLY pry them alittle with a screw driver, but after that rotate it so that the part that say TOP is...well...on top lol...and put the screw back in.

as for the draw on your sytem with the PIAA's. i have 4 Piaa 520's, Piaa 6600k HID's, and Piaa crystal ion h3's for my brights(that are on at all times, when the headlights are on). the draw from having everything on is minimul. when i turn everything on there is a .4vlt drop from my alt.

Ok, I am going to push ahead with this. I have some training to get done on the 16th and 17th, and then I have a day trip on Sunday, but then I am going to get this running. First order of business will be to to clean up the grounding points, and do a little custom grounding kit. To really make sure that things are running good, with the better battery. After that fogs will go in. As to pictures of the front end, I will get that done too. Till then I would sudjest looking at xxxGTLegacyxxx's front bumper(old one). lol I am not going to do the grill and yellowing etc. But that will be a good guess for now. Though the round lights will be a little smaller and set back a little more, to be closer to the GTB LM bumper, and keep it a little more toned down.Any tips or thoughts would be great. I am planning to run this off two relays, with two stock switches. Thanks again, and sorry for the thread hijack......

Great. It should look good. I might just put the order in today. lol Are you going with the Regular or Free Form?

LunchBox04V

ok. lol So I got a little bored today, and I did a little mock-up arts and crafts. lol Here are the pictures of the process, and what they looked like "installed." lol My mock-ups are slightly bigger then the actual units (105mm vs 100mm on the actual units) and they are slightly deeper than the actual units (about 80mm vs 62.5mm on the unit). Again, I was planning on the DRIVING lights, not the fogs. The black plugs will be replaced with the factory USDM Fogs when the PIAA's go in. I think that they should be just about right (position wise) for the beam, other than being kinda low... Thanks guys.

Here are the Factory Specs for the PIAA 510 Fog/Driving Light:

looks awesome!! how long did you spend on the "paper lights"?? lol
I went with the regular hella 500s. the free form were $10 more (and i didnt see them when i placed the order  ) lol oh well i still like the look of the regulars as well.

so what you are just going to wire your PIAAs into the stock fog lamp wireing??
this is tempting for me... saves the troubel of running wire, but then also loses the ability to turn them on whenever. also where did you get those foglight insert grills??

I think i might just run the wiring for the Hellas seprately, and keep the stock fogs and just put some hella yellow bulbs in there and possibly put some yellow lens tint on there, for bad weather driving and snow.

let me know what you think!!
thanks

lol It was a 60 minute project to make the "paper" lights. lol As to the wiring... I was going to wire two factory switches. One for each set, USDM fogs and PIAA's. I am honestly still thinking about how I am going to make them work, logic wise. haha Might just be independant. Might be hard wired to the lows (USDM Fogs) and highs (PIAA's). not really sure yet. I love the thought of creating a wall of light for all those lifted trucks we seem to have around here.... You know the ones, the ones with the rubber balls hanging.... lol

Oh the blanks.... I got them installed after I hit a Racoon. lol So....new bumper and covers. haha When the Fogs go in, they will be coming out though....

I would make the fogs independent. It's a lot simpler to wire and will be more useful. Just make sure the lights can only come on when the ignition is on.

Do you have the projectors headlights for the hids??

im running bluish tint headlight bulbs and they are crap.
other than that , the fogs and the 6" lights both have
Nokya yellow bulbs and are great!!

97legacyGT2.5
10-22-2009, 11:29 PM
no projectors (i wish  ) just 6k HIDs.

the bracket is jsut 1.250"x.250"x 3' flat steel from fleet farm. i just bent up the pices up and welded them together. there were two open threaded bolt holes under the front radiator support i belive, just got some bolts that fit in there and drilled into holes the bracket. didnt take long to make. I will try to get a pic of the bracket this weekend, granted its not raining

along with the beam pattern again if i can find a dark parking lot. lol

ilovemy96
10-23-2009, 04:07 PM
oh ok, yea i might get some 6k hids too. but was worried if it threw to much light up, and blind traffic. lol

and yea i also used a small bracket and screwed it to the bumper.

The only problem that i have is that they vibrate too much, since they are about an inch from touching the bumper.

The beam pattern of mine is basically like a spot light, so i try to aim them kind of low.

I didn't know there was a place beneath the radiator to put screws, hmm, good to know.... i might put them lower anyway. lol

thanks

Quick question.... I hope. Lol I noticed that all the Legacys at the junk yard, and mine too, and the foglight interior portion of the harness for the foglights. I was going to wire up the stock swith as it was, and was wondering, if I wire the two positive leads from the stock switch, to the relay as planned, would it work like OEM fogs? I am going to play with th switch and wiring when I get home.

On a funny note.... I am sitting at the gate after a plane swap. The last one had a bird fly INTO the cockpit, and BEHIND the instrument panel.... WTF! First leg of the 3 day trip too.......

LunchBox04V
10-26-2009, 10:00 PM
So, I gave my idea a try. I plugged the OEM foglight switch in and turned on the lights. It turned on and worked! Well the interior lighting part anyway. Lol then I put the dash back together and the backlighting on it stopped working..... Lol I will have to look into it.....

If I didn't mention it, I had taken apart the dash a year ago, and found a plug for the stock foglight..... Lol we will see how it works out. I need to test the switch, and make sure the backlighting did not just fail on that switch. When I got it from the junk yard there was a little water on it..... We will see.

EDIT: I went out and just bought another multimeter, and was able to test the switch and the harness. The harness works 100%. The variable interior lighting works perfect. For obvious reasons, the ACC 12v power was not powered.

I then tested the switch, and it turns out the "ON" light was showing resistance (aka working) and the backlighting showed nill/nothing (aka bulb blown).

I am trying to remember.... I know there was an interior lighting post, and they talked about how to take apart the buttons. Can I change the bulb? I think I can, i just can't remember... lol

eventualy i would like to put JDM fogs on as well as retrofitted projectors. the retrofits from HeresMyMind are awesome but kinda expensive for me at the moment.
