A VR6 out of a Volkswagen!!!
No but seriously, for some reason I've been hearing about SVX's lately and about how great of cars they were when they came out. I hear a lot of praise except for the weight, transmission and braking. Soooooooooo why not get one for cheap and start to tear the Legacy apart?! I think it'll be different, as I'm not looking for a high horse-powered vehicle, and I just want something with more oomph than this damn 2.5. I loved the low-end power of my VR6 when I had it...and I might get another one just for the hell of it. Anyway, I wanna hear your thoughts. And yes, I'll obviously be having a manual transmission matched to that 3.3.

Are you talking about putting a VR6 from a VW into your Leggy, or the EG33 from the SVX?
You'll definitely have to go standalone EM if you do the VR6... I can't imagine that VW ECU's are at all compatible with Subaru electronics.
The EG33 swap has been done before on older Legacies and Imprezas and not that far fetched. The EG33 is 4" longer than the EJ btw.

why eg 33, its much easier to find EZ30d it fits normally in the bay no real swapping required bolts to any ej tranny just need motor with sensors ans ecu. then if you are still unhappy with power(doubt it ) put a small supercharger like anothernord did and call it a day. much easier not as cheap though.

wouldn't an rx7 rear diff be weak since it doesnt really handle alot of torque from the motor?

The thought crossed my mind, but I highly doubt I'll even try

I was thinking of that because of the outbacks with the 3.0L, but I was a lil sip-happy at the time and thought I could just buy a whole SVX for pretty cheap.
I'm just 2nd guessing the WRX swap since it's pretty common, and an STi swap would be too expensive.

How about a Forester XT or turbo Legacy swap? Same short block as the STI, a lot less expensive. That's what I'm planning on, mainly the XT.

Actually not quite, the Forester XT, Legacy 2.5GT and 06+ WRX are all EJ255, the STi is EJ257. They are the same block, crank & rods, but the pistons are different. If you're talking long-block, the heads are definitely different also.

Why not do an RB25/RB26 if your going to do that much work?
Also, I would use a Nissan diff (s13/s14/r32/Q35/300Z), they are a dine a dozen...

Drive an STI, you'll forget about your old VR6.

...Nah that's OK.

I've driven....4? Ranging from stockish to about 450hp @ the crank. I'm not looking for crazy power in my car, just a lil more "ooommph"
EZ30 seems to be appropriate. Still a scooby motor, plus it'll have smooth linear power.
VR6 is a completely different feeling...for me at least. I don't think I've ever driven a car that was as much fun compared to my VR.
