Exhaust Path for EGR System

The EGR system on my 1997 Legacy 2.5 GT is clogged. I removed the tube that connects from the cylinder head to the egr valve and cleaned it. However, the cylinder head port seems to be clogged as well. How difficult is this to clean safely? What is the path for the exhaust inside the head? Does it go straight back from the port to an exhaust port or is the path more complicated?

I would imagine that it goes in right after the exhaust valve. The safest way to clean it would be to remove the header, then clean it from the outside so crud can fall out of the heads, and not into the exhaust system.
