Soo i dont have access to the Drivetrain and transmission section, so i'm posting in here!! Soo last night, i bought a 1997 Legacy GT Wagon, fully loaded manual!

Needs a bit of love, and the thing i want to know, is:
The shifter moves from left to right about a foot, even in gear and in neutral!

What can be the problem?
Here is an illustrated diagram of the whole shifter assembly, i was told the small spring (18 ), what else can it be?

Let me know!

Yeah, I had the same problem with my legacy when I bought it. The part is #4 in your diagram, it's the shifter knuckle and bushings. That was the first thing I fixed, it's a fairly common issue. It's not too hard to do yourself but, it's in a difficult spot to work on. The trans cross member has to come off. There are two roll pins that hold the knuckle on but, mine came easily with two punches and a hammer. Doing this on my car took almost all of the play out of the shifter.

Not to forum jack but, here's a link to a great DIY:

And here's the part you need:

Good luck with the repair.
