my speedometer only works half the time mostly on dirt roads it will work....i called a subaru dealership and talked to one of their mechanics and he said 9/10 times its the gauge cluster... then it could be 1 of the 2 speed sensors on the tranny is there anyone who knows how to figure out or test to figure out which is the source of the problem...i really need this fixed i already have 5 points on my drivers license and have only had my license for a month and a half due to a 5 yr suspension so i really dont want to lose it again due to this problem any help is greatly appreciated thank you

Is it a 4EAT or 5MT? Auto or Manual?

Go to the liturature section and find the Factory Service Manul for you vehical (1999)

I am not sure about testing but replacing isn't such a big deal since most wreckers carry used transmissions.

If you have a 4EAT
And heres a nice PDF with more 4EAT info
http://www.subaru-faq.ru/pdf/transmission/4eat.pdf

From the above PDF
"Vehicle Speed Sensor #1
Vehicle speed sensor #1 is mounted to the transmission and is basically electrical
governor pressure. It is used to detect vehicle speed and it effects shift points,
lock-up, and line pressure.
In FWD transmissions the speed sensor reads parking gear rotation at the front
output shaft. In AWD transmissions it senses the transfer clutch drum rotation at
the rear output shaft.

Vehicle Speed Sensor #2
Vehicle speed sensor #2 is built into the combination meter. In FWD units, it is
used as a back-up for speed sensor #1. In AWD units, it is used as the front output
shaft speed sensor."

just quick idea. do you have any spedo shops in your area? (use there expertise for you)i whent to one to fix my spedometer i had over sized 44" tires and it was trowing the spedo way off getting me a speeding ticket. the nice judge liked i took inititive to get the spedo fixed and took the repair cots off the speeding ticket.
just mentioning that because it was nice having the paperwork showing you had it fixed professionaly.
