2.5" produced less back pressure and causes lag during low rpm acceleration. I found that 2.25" is the sweet spot at least in my configuration.

i can agree with you on that, do you plan on doing anything to get the torque back in the low end of the powerband? I find that it would be more effective to go with a supercharger if you plan to do forced induction or go hybrid with the CAI and keep the snorkle so you don't lose the torque

no plans really since all the engine stuff is temporary, I never did feel the difference between snorkle/snorkless. I plan on doing a few events with the EJ25D then swap a JDM Ej205 head w/ a JDM EJ208 bottom end. And the transmission I plan on using is undetermined at the moment.

I never tried the snorkle idea I only heard the possibilities from doing it, so figured i'd ask. what would the benefits be from using the 205 heads on a 208?
chuckthefuk
10-19-2009, 12:41 PM
204/205 blocks are known for breaking. 204/205 heads are better flowing the 206/207/208 heads. The 208 bottom end is much stronger then the previous generations. I am only choosing this combination since this is a known fact on the inter-webs and my buddy with a GC8 just went through this nightmare.

Ya I'v seen that thread. He actually lived 20 minutes away from me. I am still debating going with a 1 - 1/2" gap between the original fender and the gd fender, this would create a fender vent from behind similar to widebody fenders.. OR just mount them flush by using just the flare and not the GD wheel arch.
Hmmmm.. I'll decide this weekend when i mock up the other side and restock some cutting discs.
My biggest concern is wheel fitment after this fender upgrade.. I am running 205/55/R16's now... I know I can fit 225's no problem with some rolling of the fender lip and the right alignment..
Any suggestions?

2) GD STi widebody fiberglass add-ons
3) GC 22b rear quarter replica (similar to xXGTBspecXx wagon)
4) SF Forester rear quarter cut outs and door cut outs

Where to start... Good new... or bad news.......... Good news it is!
Good news:
-Sold my EJ25D for $400-ish.
-Sourcing out a chargespeed (replica or original) rear quarters and doors
-removed most of the insulation and interior paint.
-prepping for seam welding and bracing with gussets.
-debating going with a weld in cage from http://www.customcages.co.uk (local dealer can offer there product line up) http://www.customcages.co.uk/Rollcage/M ... rer=Subaru (http://www.customcages.co.uk/Rollcage/Models.castle?manufacturer=Subaru)
or going with a custom cage made by a local shop. I have no real purpose for this car so certified cages are not my concern.
-Priced out carbon/kevlar single racing seat, harness, fire suppression system, and fuel cell.
Bad news:
-My father passed away in his sleep on Nov 21st 2009 @ age 58 from cardiac arrest.
-I am forced to sell my fathers body shop, since I can not become a full time body tech currently.
-I have lost the ability to work on my car in the winter.
-I have lost most of my ambition/motivation to complete the chassis prep this year/winter.
Please do not send your condolences.. I've had a month + of people reminding me.... I appreciate the thought, but lets just keep it strictly legacy in this thread.
From the bitter north.

chuckthefuk
07-25-2010, 06:22 PM
Slow if that.
Plans:
Remove rad support w/ spot weld drill bits
Remove all engine accessories that are still attached to firewall strut towers etc.
Clean and prime engine bay.

Then I'll start the wide body....
I still have to join both sections door/quarter panel together so I got a lot of fiberglassin' to do. I am not looking forward to this itchy stuff.

So time to explain why this happend.. I am sure this will make its way to the OP so here it goes. Oh by the way its long and sectional.
The beggining:
1) Original plan was to swap in a JDM v.5 swap w/ 4.44 LSD & 4pot/2pot FHI.
2) For almost 2 years Derek "DIP" as been trying to sell me his car "98' LGT 04' STi Complete Swap" for more then I could afford.
3) I did not have the money to even attempt this purchase nor did I really want 6MT since I bought all this 5MT stuff and AVCS/DBW/Newer ECU since its all very complex and unnecessary.
The Decision:
1) Derek tells me he wants lots of cash for his entire car and thats the best he can do.
2) I tell him I want to build my own car thanks but no thanks.
3) He offers me the swap w/o chassis for a very good deal w/o turbo, fuel pump, hsd coilovers, stereo, enkie rims, Sti LCA, intercooler.
4) He offers his chassis w/ sti modified hood to Zak for a price to that was reasonable.
5) I offer Zak all of my stock GT parts from my track shell. He Accepts.
The New Beginning: ??
1) I accept the offer from Derek and within 6 days that car was test driven and torn apart.
2) Zak takes ownership of Dereks chassis and all stock parts + 97' BD harness gets delivered from my place to Zaks.
3) The entire 04' Swap from the engine to the diff to the Brembo's to the wiring are put into storage until I am ready
4) All stock parts are installed. Zak now has to piece together an EJ25D from a 97 BD/K to put into the New Old 98' BD GT w/ 97' wiring harness.
So. To finish off this informative part of the process... I am really not sure about AVCS/DBW/2.5ltrs displacement.. this was not my goal.. this is a bit to extreme..
So.............................. after some thinking and calling Paul @ Neetronics in Oakville, ON we decided that my goal is not Fire Breathing Godzilla! Its actually a high-reving stock slightly tuned EJ257 :-D So were going to use the stock ECU with an OpenTune and go from there.
I am going to get the motor rebuilt with a new valve train and some bottom end reinforcement. ARP will hold the long block together and I'll figure out all the little things and my goal is with rev-response..
I've probably forgot something along the way so I'll edit it as I remember.. MY back still hurts..

Looking good chuck, you should just update the thread instead of updating the OP... much easier to read through everything in chronological order... ;P
But GL with everything! I think it's a smart move to not go with a "Godzilla eater" setup - get something straightforward, onto the track and build from there as your needs dictate.

I need to run 220v into my garage and purchase a welder.
Take welding courses and start spot welding the chassis.
Other then that:
-Complete 04' Sti swap is packed and stored.
-Chassis is completely stripped except for glass.
-6-spoke GC rims sold to Zac.
-4/2 pot FHI w/ rear hubs + axles & R160 4.44 LSD sold to Zac
-Carbon fiber hood put away in storage
-Rethinking the Cusco GC bolt in cage. Thinking about a custom proper 12+ point...
-Figuring away to delete the sunroof. either a new roof skin or just weld in a plug
-Thinking about another carbon/kevlar bucket .. co-driver/instructor seems like a good idea when i apply for race school

Ditch the Cusco, I basically hear they do not meet racing standards for anybody here in the states (SCCA and NASA)... (not that you plan on doing any wheel to wheel where you need an up to snuff cage, or live in the states for that matter....)

09-29-2011, 12:03 AM
So so I guess...
The Bad.
- Still waiting for the roll cage builder to fit me into his schedule
- Still waiting for tools, time and sanity
- Still helping friends fix, find, mod their subaru's
The Good.
- Pulled the front winshield, rear quarter glass, rear windshield, removed and cleaned sealer
- Installed a 110v winch in my garage so I can roll the body dolly out of the garage when needed then bring it back in with a push of a button.
- Started measurements for the wide-body and GD bumper conversion.
- Decided that I am going to run rear door handles on the front doors to delete the lock setup.
- Started designing the "driver cooling system" involving ducts through the lexan side windows.
- Mock-up of rear door "framed" lexan windows for rivet install
- Debating if I should or can install manual front window cranks... while still using lexan without scratching it......
- Spoke with my tuner and we decided for the beginning the setup will be ECUtek via Tactrix cable and a modest tune.
- Spoke with my engine builder and we decided on a complete rebuild including:
--- rebuilt stock EJ257 heads
--- rebuilt short block w/ forged H beams and stock sized pistons
--- cosworth bearings, blueprinted oil pump, oil baffle, oil pan,
--- killer b oil pickup / ARP everything / Upgraded Headgasket
--- Aiming for stock compression nothing fancy just looking to stay together for awhile.
Blah blah blah... its all crap until i post pics... I am just tired and busy.. but all goes well I guess :-D

Some news is better then no news..
Well to sum this up.. My mother has decided that next year she will be selling her home which currently houses my track build.. So in recent events my buddy with the MK3 Supra had recently purchased a property in northern Ontario and it includes a seperate 4 car garage :-D.
So the list goes:
1) Finish the outside of the garage..
2) Spray foam the interior
3) Build a compressor shed in the back
4) Re-frame for a hoist
5) Bring my tools .
6) Bring my Legacy!
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/7475/20111219163209medium.jpg
So.. even though its been a year this will finally get me moving in a optimal enviroment where I can:
1) Spray without concern.
2) No noise bylaws!
3) Proper room to work
4) Proper tools + workshop + security
5) Storage! I have parts spread around Ontario in garages, basements, and closets..
So I know this was not that interesting but like I said at the top.. Some news is better then no news.

My buddy understands the kind of project I took on and he is more then willing to help me. Hes a licensed mechanic and half a body guy so both of us combined should be enough knowledge to build that car properly.
Hes not charging me since he has the space and he loves projects.. once my car gets settled my buddies 72' Datsun 240Z is going in for a SR20DET swap and other goodies.
In the long run this is the best situation.. to many restrictions in the city.. thanks for the input.

So things are starting to roll..
Dropped $2000 on a deposit for my rollcage.
specs:
- Builder = Ronnie O'Brien Motorsports / Brampton, Toronto
--- He makes cages for CamJam Canada and most ORC/CRC rally cars.
- TiG Welded
- un-painted
- cage will be tied into rear subframe
- cage will pass through the firewall and tie into the shock towers.
- 10-point = $3300
- chromoly = $500
- gussets on pillars = $150
- air jack tubes = $200
- undertray/pan mounts = $200-400
- jack points = $200
Ronnie let me take some photos of his current setups.. he didn't let me take pics of certain things like his shop / door bar design / and other custom trade secrets. Here is a E46 M3 he was about to finish and paint. Sorry for the sloppy shots.. it was iffy with my smartphone acting up and constantly talking to Ronnie.

I cant begin to explain the level or workmanship / years of experience / knowledge this guy has..
Its rare to find a fabricator who will stop working for 3 hours to talk to a random customer. Even after I paid him and came back the next week I told him I had a few questions and did not want to take up his time.. What happened was 2 hours of him explaining things to me from aerodynamics of the front bumper / negative air pressure / to changing the geometry of the control arms. to talking about techniques and materials..
Ronnie is a straight up guy..
If only I had an endless supply of money.. The monster I could have!!

More updates later.. I should post pics of the stripped down shell..
I need to post some pics before I ship her off... Shocking sometimes to see a stripped shell..

Yeah... cause those sports cars always get cages. I too, would like to see a caged retired grocery getter, that can now whoop some ass. :smt023
I got bored of and disliked seeing E36/E46 cars period! (calm down Bimmer owners... I own 1 too) Sad to see them caged, with full interiors and systems and have never been tracked etc...
My point being, Chuck, you better beat the snausages out of this BD. If not, my visit to the Canuck region will entail destroying this thing if you so help me Gawd don't get to track it!

HAHA! I agree with Reason and Okin... The work looks good, but its a BMW, nothing new there... It's like with me, I love S13's, but after owning 18 of them, seeing one caged dont get my pecker up any more. I like and can admirer a clean build car from any maker, but ANY Legacy with something done to it catches my eye!
Chuk, I'm assuming that when you car is done, like when I finish my Volvo, your gonna beat the living crap out of it on the track! People keep asking what I'm doing with the Volvo. They think Vintage racing, road racing, something like that. I'm gonna beat the crap out of it drifting! Nothing like building a car the way YOU want it!
So Chuk, hurry up already! hahaha

The plan is to complete the car by next summer in its "stock form" meaning full race exterior / interior and stock power/drive train.
Looking into race school/lessons with inclass and on track with instructor.
Looking into purchasing new saftey gear..
I've lost almost 60lbs towards my "get in shape and fit in my racing seat" mission.
So once I understand the tracks I am driving on and most importantly the dynamics of my legacy, I will then BEAT the living shit out her...
Then once I get bored I'll drop coin on mods and new tune. Currently 18psi w/ COBB AP @ 290~300 AWHP.
...
The BMW was just an example of his work.. if i didn't post the main picture of the entire car all of your comments would be different.
If Ronnie would of let me take pics of his personal 4 door 98 Impreza.. bricks you guys would shit!

So things are starting to roll..
Dropped $2000 on a deposit for my rollcage.
specs:
- Builder = Ronnie O'Brien Motorsports / Brampton, Toronto
--- He makes cages for CamJam Canada and most ORC/CRC rally cars.
- TiG Welded
- un-painted
- cage will be tied into rear subframe
- cage will pass through the firewall and tie into the shock towers.
- 10-point = $3300
- chromoly = $500
- gussets on pillars = $150
- air jack tubes = $200
- undertray/pan mounts = $200-400
- jack points = $200
 You can probably buy 3 more legacy's lol but that frame will be stiff as hell :smt023

I have been thinking about it.. SLi meets in Canada are as rare as the S401..
I have been talking to Yamazaki about meeting up with him and driving 2 trailers.. 1 for the S401. and 1 for my Lego..
If this happens it will be next year after the car is assembled and probably for the RI meet..
Only time will tell. At the moment I have a long list of things to do before any of this is ready.

Heck I've done it with 4 cars. Dumped hella money to it and made it the way I wanted it, enjoyed it and at the end of it, sold it for a little more than I paid for the car. Eventhough I invested hella money and time on the car.
I bought my BD because I couldn't afford an STI but in the end I will probably spend enough money to buy a modded STI. I like the challenge and do the work myself. Its the passion :smt023

So happy. and loosing more weight to fit in this little tin can!. its hard enough being 6'4 and fat.. with doors that open.. climbing into a caged tin can is my biggest concern.

No shes in hibernation.. More so to do with the cage builders schedule but at the same allowing me to refine some of my aerodynamic mockups.. Talking with various tuners/builders/engineers... attempting to not half ass this mega build.
Spoke to one of my bestfriends.. www.sevenautomotive.ca (http://www.sevenautomotive.ca) looks like we will be taking a few cars on tour to a few events so looks like I will be representing SLi and Seven Automotive. So i think my cage has now been scheduled for a neon green paint job :-D
And "omgshitsjrdn" ... I am not sure what you are talking about. Bought the car.. Sold the hood. Got a Carbon Fiber GT style Hood.

Cajual.. ex-legacy member.. he bought it from CarbonFX.. they lost the Mold.. so only 10 made.. VIS makes one I am pretty sure
I reeeeally hope so...

I would have had a plex piece made, but it is a race car right?
chuckthefuk
07-11-2013, 11:15 AM
You got it.. I would choose carbon over plex or lex. It can be popped out easily and the wind abrasion would scuff the lex/plex till it was opaque .
Anyways.. next week lol.. then suspension and bodywork

Whoa. I guess this'll be a coupe then huh? Nobody'll be able to use the rear doors it looks like (not that a dedicated track car would need rear doors), might as well weld them shut and shave the handles.
I wonder how that'll look... Where are our photoshop queens?
chuckthefuk
07-11-2013, 03:35 PM
Yeah.. jungle gym makes it hard to hold passengers..
Pfft anyways the back cabin is going to hold my telemetry gear and fire suppression system.
I did a pshop long time ago when trying to design my widebody. with the chargespeed/apr replica kit I have it would look so weird that its not worth it.
I am on a slow build for making carbon fiber doors when I have a chance next year.
My carbon trunk should be ready I just need to get it shipped over..
Anyways progress is slow but its progress non the less.

I felt like a little piece of me was whole again... its been so long since i've seen my baby... its been so long and so many conversations of what will happen and very little outcome/production.
Today I visited Ronnie.. once again.. one of the most down to earth cool knowledge filled guy I have ever met.
I bolt in my Carbon Kevlar seat and test fitted my seat position. Sitting in the car with the A pillar bars complete and getting the first glimpse and feel of what its like to climb in my caged car....... i .... i... i.. i.... i was speechless..
I know to most people .... its just a cage man.. jungle gym of a mess.. but to me its more.. its another step towards something I want...
As far as class.. well honestly.. Open Class Time Attack... no tech inspection.. no hassle.. no angry competition.. just race against myself..
So here's the final list so far until the cage is built:
- Waiting for 4 x AirJax tubes to arrive and get welded in.
- Rockers/Side Skirts are getting side access jack points welded in + custom triangle jacks to mate with the rocker jack points
- Cut and relocate seat supports
- Harness bar
- Dash bar
- primed
Whats done so far:
- A/B/C pillars
- Firewall to Strut Towers
- Welded sunroof
- Main Hoop
- Passenger X-brace
- Driver Side X-brace extended for my fat ass.. notice the pics ... B pillar is cut into for more room.. yes this means i need custom/gutted doors... meh
I am crippled with a non-smart phone so a friend came with me a snapped some pics.. later tonight i will post them up.
Cheers SLi.. and as always thanks for the support.
- Chuck @ Seven Automotive
Open Class Time Attack. Nice. Seems to me like motorsports in it's purest form.

Its to much hassle to spec my build to compete.. I don't care for it.. if I get 4 hours of seat time a year I am good.. take it shows.. bring it out to RI meet.. do what I want.. ppl judge me.. ppl like me.. i don't care.. i build what I want how I want. My money my goals my vision.
All I am saying is I have no desire to go up against anyone with a higher skill level them me.. I don't see the enjoyment of that form of competition..
If I had it my way I would like to get staged in 2 minute intervals to prevent contact but thats not going to happen..
bring it out to RI meet..
Wait... Like, on a trailer? Or is this monster gonna be street-legal?
I know what answer I'm hoping for...

Ya... attempting to at least..
Feels good... inside and out.. I am really impressed with how the floor has been modified to fit my large frame. 6'4" with a helmet on and I have plenty of room even for my my feet avoiding the jack tube :-D
In the next 5 weeks I should have the jack stands ready for pickup and possibly some funds for my wheels..
But to be honest I think I will just find some garbage replicas that fit my needs to build the widebody around.. Yay itchy fiberglass

@Dead91silvia ... Yeah.... ur telling me.
@Grimmrican ... I believe thats a 240z and its getting a tarmac cage done on it. I think I noticed a RB26 in it but I was focused on my car to be honest.

been busy with work.
suspension should be on in a few weeks and some 18" fitment rims.. then strapped and shipped up north to start the widebody conversion..
its going to be a slow process.. but it will happen.
