Hey Guys, New member here from Sydney Australia. I drive a 1998 Gen 2 Subaru Liberty Heritage (not sure what the US equivalent is?!?). I’ve owned it since 2006 and since then it’s gone though many transformations :)

Anyway I hope to learn a bit from this site and also hope to lend any useful knowledge that I have as well.

I look forward to browsing more of the site.

Cheers

Aek

Thanks for the comments guys!! Bloody car has been a long time in the making that's for sure but definitely happy with how it’s coming together.

haha yeah thanks for moving to the right place mate! i came into this forum to have a look and was thinking wow there's another aekOne on this forum haha

The reason I actually found this site is because I was looking for hi-res copies of the STI logo. I saw the SL-I and thought I’d better check that out. Do you know if I can get a decal sent to Australia? I really like what you’ve done it!!

A couple more pics if anyone’s interested...

just thought i'd post up an update as it's been a while. Since the last update i've added an alloy radiator, after market thermo fans and relocated the battery to the boot so i can use 3" intercooler piping. Also added some phenolic spacers between the intake manifold, alloy pulley kit and a custom headers heatshield to keep engine bay temps down a bit. Last but not least i put on some Project MU wheel nuts for added bling lol. I'll post up some pics when i get a chance.

little update. after an engine failure on the Dyno, CDA have built me a new bottom end. 2.2L. Xcessflow are doing the tune. All new internals, again. KLS turbo, CNR external gate and screamer.

We're more concerned with reliable power, not ridiculous numbers so are aiming for somewhere between 280kw (380bhp) and 320kw (448bhp)

haha well pretty ridiculous compared to standard yeah. quite a lot of guys out here pushing 300kw all day every day and starting to see quite a few above 400's appearing.

once the registrations lapses for 2011 i think i'm going to deregister it, put in a cage, get a trailer and retire it to the track as it's not going to practical for around the city anymore. if i change engine management to maybe autronic or something similar it'll be ok but the haltech's a bit primitive.

G'day everyone :smt039

So it's been a while since any updates haha. I just noticed a few people mention SL-I and a few SL-I members posting up on SubyClub which reminded me about this thread.

Not much has happened recently as the cars been off the road for the past two year gathering dust in the back corner of my mates workshop. That was until around three months ago when i decided it was time to pull my finger out and try and finish it off.

To get it back on the road I ended up getting a fresh EJ205 bottom end built by CDA (scrapped the 2.2) and put that in with a TD05-20G. Hopefully i'm going to swap that out soon for a something like a Blouch or disco potato.

We also ended up having to rewire a heap of the harness as parts had been butchered at different time by different people. That sorted out a lot of the signal issues i'd been having. The Haltech was also replaced with an EMS which has made things a bit easier as that had always caused me problems since it was installed (the issues with the wiring wouldn't have helped either).

Its still on the run in tune at the moment so hopefully i can get that done in the next couple of weeks, get the new turbo, flip the front mount so i can put the fogs back in and do a powertune.

Also added ganadors and finally put my projectors in since the last pics :)

07-12-2014, 06:45 PM
what year is that bar from? the fog lights look very different to our as well so would need to source a bar, fogs and probably reo to make it all work

Muse
07-12-2014, 11:03 PM
that would be a 1996-1999 Legacy 2.5GT. Actually it was available on all USDM Legacys in 1998-99. But, like I said, the fogs on the white one are probably a custom job. you would need the full bumper beam, the cover, fogs, brackets, and ideally, the grille to make the full conversion work. The short grilles are the same fit US and JDM, but the tall grilles are different heights, with the USDM grilles being taller than the JDMs.

Why would you ditch your perfectly good JDM bumper? You should be so lucky to have an AUDM model that came factory with the jap style bumper, A bumper that the guys on these forums spend much time tracking down and putting on their cars.

Doesn't make much sense to me. Guess it's the whole 'wanna be different' thing. Would def be a talking point though, for sure.

I find the JDM bar to be much more attractive as well. The US one protrudes outwards quite a bit more and all the vertical slats in the lower portion of the grill make me think of someone showing off their teeth. It's also not as attractive if you need to post a license plate. To each their own, but I think it's a downgrade in style. You will also need to find a taller grill to fill the gap between it and the bumper as well as the bumper beam.

yeah it's all about trying to have a point of difference i guess. everyone here has the jdm/audm or the gtb limited bars so want to try and make it a bit different from the crowd.

also i never ever said anything about ditching bars (i've also got 2 more spare JDM bars stashed at work for a rainy day  ), i'd just try and track down a usdm bar as another alternative i could swap around if i wanted. i'd remove the vertical supports before using it too. i may have tracked down a slightly rarer aftermarket jdm bar now anyway so in no rush to get the US bar, it was just idea. thanks for the feedback though

Considering there are about 4 of us with limited bars and 2 or 3 with standard GTB or RX bars as we call them the US bar is quite exotic, as funny as that may sound

Grass is always greener on the other side.

I have a wee confession, I actually quite like the US front bar too, they are just that much more aggressive, has to be the only time US stuff is actually an improvement.. I'd never ditch a jdm style bar for one, but if I was starting with a low speccer, I'd def consider it.

I also prefer the USDM BD boot lid, they look more like a BG tailgate, with the big recess, unlike the relatively flat and boring JDM one. Again, only the second gens have this honour. First gen, 3rd and 4th gen US stuff looks so fucking bland next to JDM.

hi guys, so a bit of an update on my front bar search. i ended up finding a jdm hipposleek bar at a wreckers out here that i picked up for a song. it needed a fair bit of work to get it up to scratch but in the end scrubbed up pretty nicely. its a little more aggressive than i'd anticipated but i think i can dig it.

also did some stuff under the hood, changed headers and up-pipe, new dump, VF22 (replaced the eBay spec TD05 i had which was garbage), added twin catch cans and custom airbox, new stereo and Defi gauges and a bunch of tidy up things. still got a lot more work in the engine bay to get it where i want it but starting to make progress now.

It's off for a tune tomorrow so fingers crossed it goes well!

so tune is done. Spent almost 8hrs with Adam from JEM today running over the entire car. theres lots to tidy up still but overall shes in good shape and ready to cruise.

Ended up making 210kw at 20psi on what Adam calls "safe to thrash all day" tune. He reckons if i wanted to push it to the limit we could probably get almost 230kw but the turbo would have well and truly been on the ragged edge of efficiency. It drives amazingly so i'm really happy with the result.

Now that front bumper looks sexy! Your car is looking shape. Keep it up!

As for the USDM one, I'm not a fan at all. Even the base model Legacy in 98-99 got the same as the GT. I do find it a steep over the early one, but the Outback is more my style then the GT one. That being said, I absolutely love my JDM Limited! Most aggressive factory OEM bumper made for a Legacy. But as has been said, the grass is always greener. ;)

So.. after a few years gathering spiders and leaves in the carpark at work, i finally fixed up a few things that need fixing and have her registered again. its all above board this time too with it registered as a turbo with the engine swap and manual conversion. an unmarked police car pulled me over literally on the way home from having it registered and apart from a comment about it being a bit loud send me on my way after a alcohol breathe test. happy days!
