Hey

Just wondering if someone could give me a bit of advice about these HID kits that are about.

I have noticed that there seems to be two different powers available? 35w and 50w

Im guessing the 50w is the brighter of the two but are they both road legal.

Also with HID's there are different light temperatures that alter the colour made, this generally ranges from 3000k all the way to 10,000k.
What are the legal limits of these bulbs? Im just fancying some of the yellow effect 3000k bulbs but if Im going to have problems off the Po Po Ill get the brighter, whiter, more annoying (to everyone else) white ones at 5000k or 6000k.


Any information you could give would be most helpful!

Depending on your local laws all HID kits are "for off-road use only" .... and are not DOT legal thus making it not street legal. You can get away with using retro-fit hid's from a OEM manufacture like Acure/BMW/Mercedes, etc.. One member on SLi makes retrofits I think his name is HereIsMyMind

Although some places wont even allow retrofit because it was not installed by the factory/dealer.

35watt runs a lower "lumens" count then 55watt. So yes the 55 watt is brighter

Example:
Bulb Temperature 3000K
35 watt 2950 lumens
55 watt 4800 lumens

4300K is almost white with a yellow hue
5000K is a very bright white.
6000K is a very very bright white with a blue hue to it

If you don't want to piss off anyone use 4300K.

I have been in the market and have done a bit of research on the matter. As far as different online retailers (there are many), http://www.ddmtuning.com seemed like the best quality for the price: about 40-60 bucks for a kit. Their DDM brand kits have an included lifetime warranty and they have a raptor brand that is in the $40 range with a 1 year warranty. The Philips brand HID kits as you may know are very expensive ($270) but you might get what you pay for...

35W VS. 55W: DDM claims that a 8000K 55w kit will look more like a 6000K 35w kit (whiter but brighter) due to the properties of the HID bulbs under more power.

I have been looking into HIDs also and what i have found is that if you want to get good light distrabution and actually be able to see you should look for anything bellow 6000K, anything above that starts to lose light visability. If you want to get noticed then the higher the number the more vibrant the color, but if you are looking for visability between 4000k and 6000k is the best bet.
This sight will explain everything about HIDs and the different kinds of bulbs that they have. and just as he recamends getting philips brand i do too, they are higher performance better made and they also are street legal. although they are costly it will be worth it i feel in the end to have a bulb and balost that is made out of high quality material then a shotty one.

HID kits and HID retrofits (ie HID projectors being incorporated into a housing) are illegal in most places. It's just that it is 1) hard to prove you have some aftermarket kit 2) officers of the law don't really enforce such laws.

agreed, I live in MA and roughly 60% of the drivers i have seen have HID kits and retros, even with the purple hue HIDs cops round here still dont seem to wanna pull ppl over. all in all i guess as long as the lowbeam isnt blinding the oncomers or ppl in front of you then you should be all set
