blown headgasket on ej25 can i put in ej22

Hey my headgasket in my 97 legacy outback blew. i heard i can put in a 2.2 liter has anyone done this and what does it take to do it? Any help would be awesome.

Seriously I went down the same exact path and decided to just have a shop do the HG's

Look at it this way, the swap into a less powerful EJ22 is going to cost about 1000 to 1500 bux parts and labor and you end up with what? Less power

I don't know where you live but Im in CT and i had ECS do my HG's for about 1400 to 1500 parts and labor. you get to keep your EJ25 and all its power... See where im getting at?:smt023

Just call around and get a reputable shop that have worked on subies to do it.

throw your Ej25 cams into the EJ22 and it will be just as fast.

Can't do that. Our EJ25D's are DOHC one cam for intake and one cam for exhaust. The EJ22 is a single cam, one cam to control both intake and exhaust.

EJ25D are DOHC, and all USDM EJ22Es are SOHC. Swapping in a Phase II EJ251/3 cam might help, but the big power boost those cars got was the larger valves, not cam work.

I talked to sleepysubie about this, and he can get the donor EJ22E for cheap. It's way more reliable, as a general rule, but is a fair bit down on power. More power at this altitude (4500ft) certainly goes a long ways.
