the ultimate dd na subie

I'm thinking to myself a dd that was na would be really tits. However what's the ultimate na dd subie under 5k nada?

I would use it to tow my sled and drive to and from work.

Impreza outback sport?

Bg limited?

Forester s?

heated seats would be really nice and the h6 in the outback would be nice to however not easy to find.

What do you all think?

I already had a bd so don't want that, unless sus :D

They do - 2001-2004 BH, but it's 4EAT only.
I'd go for the Forester S and skip the Imprezas.

Not sure about the US market price, but a 2.5RS auto x spec would be perfect.

When towing you want Torque, although the 2.5's can do some pulling an H6 auto tranny would be best overall that subaru makes. I wouldnt recommend towing with a 5 speed, you will be going through clutches like nothing.

Thing is like mentioned about the 2.5rs state side they are about 2 to 5 grand more than the legacy 2.5. However I,m going to go auto.

Just for a reference I towed my sled with my ej205 bd 400 miles from my parents place to College, used a 2 place sled trailer with one sled. Boosting in 5th hear and 8 inches of fresh snow, it was tits, except when I went to figure gas mileage. 14.5mpg

And the h6,s from 00-04 in the outback look nice but are spending.

Is there really that much more torque with the 6?

Also since I'm a trunk monkey I know i'll fall for the h6 outback sedan!

The H6 is much better for towing compared to the 4 cylinder. The H6 is comparable to the 2.5 turbo in horsepower & torque and would give a better gradual torque curve for towing.

The h6 would need some l badging though don't want the world to know you own a subaru with torque

For reference, I tow with the 2.5 wagon, 400 lbs trailer, and 250 lbs bike. I travel highway for most of towing for enduros. Hills take a lot out of the little motor.

Also, consider a wagon. Much easier to fit all the gear for the snowmobile. Warm gear is much better than frozen gear on the trailer. Just my 2 cents.

Light, decent power, easiest on gas, most fun to drive.

You can't find a Flat six Outback for under 5k right now, but that would be the best NA DD subaru that wasn't heavily modded (swapped). For under 5k, I'd go for a well sorted 99 BG limited with a 5MT (cold weather package would be nice). This way, you'd have all the room you needed to haul stuff, plus the clearance for the ruff stuff in Alaska. Either that, or a BD SUS if you don't like your car BEING a trunk.

Make sure headgaskets have been done of course and if not, use that as a way to drop the price.

like most said it would be pretty hard to find H6 for under 5k trust me i know i have one, but possible if you play your cards right, i got a steal on mine 02 H6 bought it in march 07 with 86k miles bone stock for a whooping 9k while market price was around 12.5-14 or more. so now almost 3 years later im sure you can find one but i wont be in the best condition we are talking at least 175k miles 02 non-vdc model from a private owner who WANTS to get rid of it OR if you can find a new car(non subaru) dealer with a trade in sitting in their lot for more than two month, if they say advertise it for 7.5k you can knock the price down to around 5k but you gotta be strong and know what to say. gl
