i am familiar with what the EGR system does and why. but i also don't like what they do and on my higher mileage car it is putting more carbon gunk in my intake than i would like. i have the drivers head off now and was looking at the EGR system and noticed it has no electrical monitoring or sensors. from my experience with older Toyota's you could use block off plates and delete the EGR system with no ill effects. anyone see a problem with doing this on the 2.2?

EJ22E with a 5MT did not have an EGR valve. I have a 96' BG Outback 5MT and the valve is not there

"The ej22 harness does not have the EGR input so you must delete the EGR all in all. This requires you to make a block off plate on your manifold and finding suitable plugs to plug the EGR openings on the driver side head and manifold."

"It was throwing an egr code before I grounded the pin that told the ecu that it was supposed to be for a manual tranny. Afterwards, no code. So for the 96's the ecu's should be the same for manual and auto transmissions. You just have to let it know which one you have."

hey Chuck

Im running into something similar, but yet not

Im putting EJ22 heads on a EJ25D block. I have Intake mani and heads off of a EJ22 and as I was looking thru it afew days ago to my surprise I could not find the EGR on it. Now(after reading this thread) I know that the EJ22 don't have a EGR.

Now to my question

Without a doubt my ECU is going to trip a CEL for EGR right?
Do you know how I would go bout faking the ECU into thinking that the EGR is ok.

As stated above, do I just have to ground the EGR pin wire from the ECU to a groud?

LMK

THANKS,
-Ant

**EDIT - sorry for jackin ur thread OP(DN1911)

no problem, all the info is welcome. i think i am going to put the EGR back on my car just to avoid any drop in gas mileage. haven't decided yet and it maybe something i play with later this year to see what it does.

4n70n1n0 is your car 5MT? IIRC you can just swap in a EJ22E 5MT ECU and be on your way.

I am not 100% sure if you can ground the pin a EJ25D harness to delete the EGR but from what I found the EJ22E harness can have the EGR delete via the grounded pin.

But back to DN1911 thread..

I am still confused.. Is your car 5MT? If so there is no need to do any modification since the EJ22E 5MT has no EGR system.

The EGR system actually helps with MPG. I wouldn't be deleting it unless it makes the engine run worse.

And reduces the possibility of detonation under light acceleration.

BTW, just as a point of worthless trivia, the PCM uses the MAP sensor to watch for changes in the manifold pressure when it switches the EGR on/off. That's how it knows if it is working or not.
