It costs nothing to keep it here as long as I don't drive it. It isn't more expensive to register/insure it here than Japan, but I'm not willing to use personal funds to do that since I don't drive it much.
Do you have to tread in the grey areas of the law to register it or have all the legal hoops been jumped through that you could just head to DMV and get plates?

Hmm ik what you mean. How long are you able to go without registering or insuring it? Not sure about in MD but in WI any vehicle u drive has to be insured and u get a hefty fine if pulled over without insurance on your car. Course that fine would prolly be cheaper than the insurance in ur case in sure lol

It was imported legally (i.e - the US Govt recognizes it by it's actual VIN), so I don't need to do something like a VIN swap or anything. I think I need it to go through emissions or something, but past that it should be able to be registered. I've made some half-hearted attempts to find out what all the forms I need are, but again- I don't think I will register it any time soon. When I finally do want to do it, I will actually go get it all done.

It's true, I would have to pay out if I got pulled over. It's just like any other unregistered/uninsured car here. That's another reason why I don't drive it.

yeah I hadn't thought about it not being registered as well.. what a headache if you got pulled over... unless the cop understood how rare the car is and let you off because of it! haha

So as a couple of you know, I've been wanting to buy a Tesla Model S. The problem is, I haven't learned out to crap out gold bricks and the price of the Tesla is kind of steep. Well, today I finally considered the thought of selling the S401 (and the Imprezaab) to finance a Tesla Model S.
Now, I am just contemplating selling. I haven't actually decided anything yet. But I'd like to know what people think I could get for it if I did decide to. I realize most people have never heard of the S401, much less care. The people that have heard about it generally don't have stacks of cash laying about. Be realistic in your estimates (or guesses really).

No. You said it yourself, when they make a Tesla that is limited to 400 units, then consider it. You've got a super rare car that has an owners club that includes Subaru rally champions, and the car itself is a trophy of Subaru's engineering excellence.
No. You'll regret it when Teslas become so affordable everyone and their brother has one.

I know what I've said. But I've been using the S401 as a daily driver for a week now (don't ask), and as amazing and sublime as it is, it's age starts to show in some areas. It was never decked out in luxury (US cars get more in that department), but now a Kia has more amenities than the S401. I know it's rarity, I just wonder if that's enough of a reason to hold onto it. I very rarely drive it (unless I use it as a reserve car) and when I do, gas is pricey. I've owned an S401 for almost five years now. Just like the original owner did, it may be time for me to pass it on to somebody else. Hell, the original owner drove it less than 7,000 km in six years! I've driven it three times that. And I'd still have the H6 for when I want to scratch the modification itch.
But this is all moot. I haven't decided I'm selling anything yet. I just want to know what people think I could get if I did.

IF you sell it, at least choose carefully. I realize it isn't my decision, but the S401 is one of the biggest reasons I love the BE so much. Just riding in it made me appreciate my car so much more. I would hate to see it fall into the hands of someone who doesn't care about what it is.
As I said before, I'm horrible at pricing things, but with there only being 286 produced, and surely less than that left in existence, combined with the fact that it is nearly completely stock and the only S401 in America, and legally registered and all, I'd ask somewhere between $30,000-$40,000. Again, I'm horrible at pricing.

I wish I was loaded so I could afford to buy it. Please don't sell it Lexi.
I think there's only four people that would treat that car right in the US. And so far as I know, Renicki Thom and Robin don't have that kinda cash. So unless Jay Leno comes-a-calling, I'd hold onto it.
The Imprezaab though... It is, in some ways cooler than the S401, but it can be done again should you regret selling. Done better, in fact.

Maybe Thom, Rob, Robin, Chuck, Jon and I could all put our finances together and jointly take care of it. Out of my garage, of course.
Or Shane could buy it, and make it an asset of SL-i. My business schooling is kicking in now.
Okay, so there's more than I listed. But Leno's still the only one with a fat enough billfold to afford it. Probably.

Sad to hear the mention of selling. :( Makes me far more sad than when another RHD Postal pops up on Craigslist and i cant throw down cash to go and get it!!! However, the view is far different on this side for us all. We are thinking with our emotions whereas yours are practical and big picture/long term.
I am however firmly on "Team Do Not Sell". Main reasons being: the exclusivity of this model, your own blood sweat and tears with importing and legalizing and it only appreciating in value with time. Even after the 25 year exemption rule brings them into legal status you still have its rare production #. I can't really think of a value but, you could look at the "market" (or lack their of) for the Impreza 22B's they are getting snatched up immediatley and going for big #'s! Also, how would title transfer go from you to the new owner? Would it ever legally be their car?

Yamazaki and I talked about it earlier today... I, like him, would LOVE a Tesla Model S, however I did say pretty much what Mike and the rest of you are saying.
I would be vary disappointed to see it go, but at the end of the day, it's just a car. A piece of machinery. As for what I think it's worth, Yama already knows what I think. It's really technical when it comes to this car. I would say with having plates and such, it's in the $50K range. I only say this because I feel it's more rare then a R34 GT-R and those cars go for even more. The only problem is the market. Everyone and there brother want a Skyline, but who really wants a Legacy? Only the ones who know what it is. So you need to sell someone on the fact that they want a Legacy over a Skyline or a Supra.
I would say this would be a case of who has the money to toss around. Jay Leno came up as a name and a local collector comes to mind as well. This would be a hard sell to the average collector. It's like me, would I pay crazy money for a low production number Ferrari? Hell no, but if it was a Toyota 2000GT I'm all over that. So it's more the market. We know how rare it is, we know the pedigree of this car. If there is anyone on this forum, other then Yama, that knows this car for it's physical and mechanical aspects its me. I have spent hours riding in it and even doing a little work to it. I know how well the factory tune is, even more so having a GT-B TT as a daily. The S401 is truly a special car, it's just selling others on it.
So my numbers? I say with valid plates, $50K, ballpark. I would love to give this car a spot in my shop, but it's not even an option for me. There is a reason I have 2nd gens.

Sad to hear. I've really enjoyed catching glimpses of it on 32 while I am working. $50k sounds reasonable considering. If you just want the model S because its electric and does it well wouldn't it be wiser to wait for the $35k model to be released? I heard that is only a few years away (2016/17) and maybe then you can keep the S401. Not to mention by then they may have extended the range even more.

the only way that you'll get that 50k or even close to it is a raffle like $100 bucks a ticket and you only need 500 people to participate between sli, lgt, and nastycock im sure that number of people is possible to reach. Selling it to a collector is not going to happen as in there are really no legacy collectors out there. Another option is of course selling it to a dealership for display but finding dealership that wants it will be difficult.
In my honest opinion from a single person on any of these boards you won't get more than 20k for it as most people just don't know what it is.

I know that you have been going back and forth on this idea, and I was really hoping that it would not happen.
But, I agree with just about everything said in this thread... It is worth quite a bit, but you will have a real hard time finding a buyer to pay what it is worth.
I know I have said it before, but perhaps SOA would be interested in buying it for their collection. You know that they will treat it right, and have the bankroll to pay for it.

Thats not a bad idea, but that would still be pretty hard.
If he could only find people to buy it for $20K, I would sell off most of what I have and buy it myself. $20K gets you a clean USDM 04-05 STi. This is an even cleaner Legacy STi that is by far more unique, then any other Subaru. The car still has less then... what is it, 20K miles? You will pay over $20K for a Bspec GT.

I don't think SOA would/will be the buyer of this. It's more on a global level. I see this car going back to Japan or to the UK to a private individual because of the RHD nature of it. Someday i want to be that collector here in the states with 8-10 rare RHD's!
Does Subaru (Fuji Heavy) have a private collection or museum?

Holy crap, this received a lot more responses than I thought it would.... A guy at work suggested that I only ask a ridiculous amount of money for it (way more than I think I can get). That way if it doesn't sell, I still have it and if it does sell, I have a crapload of cash.
Like I said, I haven't decided on or made a move to do anything yet. I do plan to go test drive a Tesla next weekend.
The thing is, I'm afraid that if it did sell, there's a chance that it would go (perhaps not this sale, but one in the future) to some idiot who didn't know what it is, or wouldn't pay attention. Someone with more money than brains who would merely buy it for "JDM, yo!" and promptly drive it into the ground. I know Yama will try to be really careful, but... Shit happens. And I really would hate to see it happen to this car.

That I would agree with. I would sell my Volvo if someone said, "hey, I'll give you $20K for that Volvo!" If someone said "I'll give you $65K fr the Legacy" I dont think anyone in their right mind would not turn that down.

Yes, money talks and everything is ALWAYS for sale. There is/ always should be a number attached to every material object. If not, your silly or filthy wealthy. :P
Yama: On another note, wouldn't selling the SaabSTI yield a good chunk of the purchase price on the Tesla? Say... $20k down on $50k purchase price (just using round #'s) leaving $30k to finance over 3,4,5+ years at a good rate!? Do able?

$50K purchase price? Have you price checked a Model S? The lowest grade I would settle for is $79K before taxes/registration. I would be selling the Imprezaab in addition to the S401 if I did. I may sell the Imprezaab anyway since it's not a nice daily driver (mine stopped being friendly in '07 after all the work was done to it). The Imprezaab is much closer to the chopping block than the S401. I realize I can't get anything for the H6, that's why it isn't even being considered.

My wife just said she thinks I would regret it if I sold the S401. But she said she feels like I will decide to sell it anyway. I don't back down when I decide I want something (S401 being a good example), and I've been really talking up the Tesla.
I still really don't know though. However, the more I think about it, the more sure I feel I may have to let the Imprezaab go though. I'm just not young enough anymore to enjoy it like I used to. I want sophistication and class now. Not brute, tear-your-face-off power.
...okay, that may be a load of crap. I'm always complaining about how slow the H6 is.
Damn, guys. I'm really confused right now.

Here is a super idea. You know that raffle you were going to do for the S401? 500 people pay $50? You know what they also might pay $50 for? The ImpreS(TI)aabaru. Run a raffle on that first. And just to protect yourself, don't start the raffle until you reach a preset number of contestants.
I like your STI, but if you need the money, that would be the car to get rid of because:
a) a lot of people know what it is
b) it is still unique
c) it is worth a good chunk of money
d) it is a bitch to drive and probably sucks gas
e) if you REALLY want it back, buy another STI and build it up again
And who knows, for the right Legacy enthusiast, the Blitzen6 might go for more than you would expect.

Just my $.02 but I would be kicking myself later if I sold it, I'm looking at this like the 22B, they're getting more and more rare and are reaching higher numbers. I plan to keep my spitfire for as long as I can and maybe I'll pass it down to my kids when I'm older, who knows? Lol I say hold onto it for now.
..if you did sell it, it could wind up in a Fast and Furious movie LOL

So after driving the S401 as a daily for the past month, I am definitely not going to sell it. If I don't drive as if my ball hair is on fire, it uses about 45~50% of the gas the Impreza does. I also have had a better chance to calculate the fuel costs for the S401. It's about $6.50/gal compared to the Impreza's $4/gal. So I may decide to title/register the S401 afterall.
I plan to have the Impreza driving again soon though, so we'll see. The Impreza's days may be numbered. The S401's future is secure regardless of what I decide for the Impreza.
I'm coming up on 40,000kms on the S401 though. I don't like the thought of it going higher. My Impreza has just passed 40,000mi and I don't like that either. Damn these high milage cars....

My GT-B had 101K (kilometers) when it got to Canada. Had 113K when I got it. Thats like 69K in miles and thats on a 1996.

If I don't drive as if my ball hair is on fireNow.. there's a mental image for ya.
Yeah, that's harder than you might think (the driving part, not the fire part). I can hear the primary turbo start to spool around 1500~1600 rpms. So I've started shifting around 1800~2000 rpms. The problem comes when I don't shift in time and it starts to pull. I like the acceleration so much that I just don't shift until both turbos are pulling and I'm flying. As you can imagine, that kind of interferes with good fuel economy....
Seriously though, I'm convinced this car was built with sorcery. I don't know how it can out-accelerate my Impreza (and my Impreza is not slow to begin with) while being considerably heavier and about 100~150 less HP. And how is the ride so smooth and supple (I can take speed bumps at speed and not really feel it), but turn in and twist around better than my Impreza? I thought they were both STIs.... Shouldn't they be similar? Damn Japanese witchcraft....

The tires aren't anything special. I wasn't going to shell out for the Pirelli P Zero's that the car came from the factory with because of the recent Mercedes purchase, but they'll still outperform the current worn-down winter tires that are on now.

Today we showed that five guys in a car with low air doesn't make for happy tires.... So huge thanks to dead91silvia, rkrenicki, and muse for helping out with putting on new tires on the S401.

Luckily, Yamazaki had a whole set of new tires waiting at the house, so we went over to a Do-it-yourself auto facility and changed the tires. I don't really have any pictures of the actual tire changing, as we were all busy actually putting them on the rims.

Prior to the tire incident, we were playing around with the ECU in the S401. After removing the knee bolster on the the car to connect up the test mode connectors, and connecting my computer to the S401, I tried to turn on the car. This was a slightly panic inducing moment for me as the car would not turn on... nobody had told me that the battery was disconnected. Again, Dead91silvia had the honors of actually working on the ECU itself...

As far as I can tell, the earlier numbers got the regular sedan bumper and the later numbers got the same bumper as the Blitzen. Mine is the earliest that I've seen with the Blitzen bumper. The others that I saw were in the 200's. That's also why the S401 brochures and press releases have the regular sedan bumper. That car was 000/400.

I suppose it is possible there is one that nobody here knows about, but I find that extremely unlikely considering how rare it is and only an enthusiast who would bother bringing another one here... Someone either here, LGT, or even NASIOC would have posted something about it.
But, being that it was someone on Facebook that is claiming it.. I am 110% sure that they are either wildly misinformed, or making it up.

I made the mistake of parking in the Subaru dealer lot when I went to go look at Audi's (next door) with a coworker. It started to draw a crowd of Subaru technicians. None of the techs knew what the S401 was though and just thought it was neat just because it was a twin turbo and right hand drive.... Sad day for the S401. I would've got just as much attention with an RSK or GT-B.
Why did STI even bother with making these cars (S series) if people are just going to think they're just "upgraded" versions of lower models?
Another annoying thing was that one of the techs (who had said he hadn't heard of the S series of cars) started talking to me about Japanese Imprezas and he got his facts wrong. He tried to tell me how he knew what he was talking about when I tried to correct him. I hate the internet and all the misinformation it spreads...
Oh well, at least I got to check out an RS7. That thing is amazing.

Because they didn't make those cars with the general public in mind (especially not the American general public), they made them with the serious enthusiast in mind. Heck, the s-series could be considered the cars the engineers designed for themselves!

I have to agree with Reuben. Even in America, there are cars that little know about. Like the COPO Camaro of the Hellcat Challenger. Cars most tech in America have no clue about. These cars are built for a VERY small amount of people that care about them.
As an American, I actually dont know as much as my other American friends when it comes to Domestic cars because, well, I find them kinda boring. This is why I have most of my knowledge set on Japanese imports. They fascinate me. The S401 to me is a car like the COCP Camaro. Extremely rare, not cheap, but few know about it. I also have corrected many people on Japanese cars and assumptions. This is why I always ask a crazy amount of odd questions when I visit, I want to make sure I'm right when it comes to Japan. Two weeks ago I had the detailer (at my friends car lot) try and school me on about Z32 300ZX's. Saying so many inaccurate information that I finally realized it was a waste of my time to share what I know, and what I know is right.
My parts guy at the local dealer admits he knows nothing about cars, but loves my GT-B. I told him and showed him pics of the S401 and educated him on it and he has a lot of respect for it. Some people will listen when there is someone they know, know their stuff. Some Subaru people dont know a damn thing and this is generally the internet warriors. Most have not seen the cars they claim to know about. Hell, I had someone try and school me on GT-B's and told me mine was a conversion! How funny is that?!
At any rate, we know what you have. Many of us have seen it in person, ridden in it, and I was even privileged to drive it a small bit (wish I could have opened it up!) and we all love and respect the S401 and the other S cars after it. :smt023

That's only 3rd Gen. 1st and 2nd Gen had GT sedans. US 3rd Gen was a little more like those. Then it all changed again in Japan for the 4th Gen. North America got an even more different set of models (regarding RS, etc.)

So I'm tossing about the idea of selling the S401 as well as the Impreza. It's just an idea (whereas the Impreza is for sale now), so no need to wonder the fate of North America's lone S401 just yet.
1) To begin with, I'd have to figure out it's value- both market and real. However, I don't know how to begin calculating something like this.
2) Then, I'd have to find a person willing to pay that value with the money to do so.
Only two steps, and both are not easy.

Well, this is something I dont support, but it's your car and ultimately your decision.
1st: Looking at how much the cars are going for in Japan. Only cars of the same or better caliber. Same or less miles, options and such.
2nd: Do the same for cars outside of Japan.
3rd: Calculate 100% of your cost to get the car to the United States legally and able to stay.
4th: If possible, you need to complete the registration so it's Legal to drive on the road. You also might want to look into getting a federal bond release if you dont already have one.
5th: Find a place that can do a value appraisal. A place that does classic cars might be able to do it for you.
Thats all I can think of now. Keep in mind this is a Legacy, not a GTR. We all know the S401 is a rare car, but it's also not well known. However, that does not make it worth less.

try to find a collector club in your area, going to classic meets or events as they would call them, preferably with the car. Basically get it advertised enough for someone to want one, as none of their friends would have it.
as stupid as it sounds that show "whats my car worth" send them a couple of pics and see what they say.
but to get top dollar it will have to be legally registered in the USA, otherwise start looking for a UK buyer, shipping is not too expensive and folks there would love it.

Perhaps I'm mis-interpreting your post, but it seems like there are a number of them for sale there. Mathematically speaking, considering the small number produced, the amount of time since production (increasing chance of destruction), and the size of the world that they can be exported to (pretty much anywhere but North America), I wonder how many are genuine for sale in NZ. On top of that, I would be absolutely stunned to see one that is factory with only 40,000kms on the odometer.

At least two new S401 were brought in by a Subaru dealership plus s/h ones imported by used car dealerships.
To put it simply - no one in New Zealand will pay $20+ grand for S401, you can get S402 for around that or an Impreza STI V8+ (most likely scenario). Sadly local ebay aka trademe doesn't keep photographs/end bids of finished auctions to show you "real selling" prices.
But yeah, up to you basically whether to believe or not. Google obviously knows better :D

Yup, that stuff gets dumped here when the japanese business men that own these cars as trophies see the newer model come out. Sad, but good for us! I've seen a couple for real, there's even an S-edition in town, but they are not as rare (same blue, similar wheels, red 4-pots instead of brembo's, no special tune etc).
There's no S401's up for sale at the moment, but there's an S-edition (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/subaru/auction-776365190.htm) for 7,500 right now.
there's an S204 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/subaru/auction-782602010.htm) though
Honestly, it's not worth selling the S401... why the hell would you go through the amazing mess and pain you went though to import a car that you don't care about... And if that's inaccurate, and you do care about it, why are you even considering selling it? I doubt you'll get your money back either.

In Japan, none of those are considered "special". Unfortunately, Japan is the land of "special edition" cars. They'll call something special just for the paint job (look at the "midnight purple edition" GT-R). Even the "tuned by STI" and "tS" models are just another model to them. Which makes it difficult to explain why the S series of cars and the RA-R are so different.
But go drive an unmodified RSK and then drive an unmodified S401 and you'll see that they are completely different vehicles. The S402 is even better still....
Anyway, I did say that I was just thinking about selling. Only the Impreza is actually on the chopping block. I just wanted to know what the S401 would fetch here in the land that isn't Japanese-car dumping grounds. I've had the S401 for six years already and I've put 30K kms on it. Maybe I should look toward something newer than a 12yr old car. But again, just thoughts.

The BC driver in me is spitting tacks at that statement... Newer is for daily duties.... Weekend duties cars can be as old as the hills, it's not a relevant thing to them.
Funny thing is my daily's a 1990, and the weekend beast is a 98... I've put 70,000k's on beast too, which is nothing compared to Amy's GC, which she's put 200,000 on. Both 98's, both our special babies that we will never sell, that will never be old and deprecated to us, they are as much a part of our lives as we are to each other.
I think I know what's wrong here, you're thinking logically about the situation. Trust me, gotta go with gut feeling with cars. The money we pour into them is never made back, instead it's poured in as an investment to our well-being, our enjoyment when we take them out for a spin. Not something you can put a monetary value on, and not something a newer car can do better, just because of its age.
It's good to have these thoughts once in a while, it can make you appreciate what you have all the more by the end of it. :smt002

to get a feel for a price you have to advertise it, this forum knows what you have and appreciate it, but only a handful of folks could actually afford it, monetary or interest wise.
Put an add on nastysock see what imprezza fanboys think about it, much more exposure. I agree with others that cars do become part of the family after a while but at the same time you have one life and if you feel you have experienced S401 to its full potential it may be time to move on.
To me it doesn't matter what year a vehicle is, if it is doing it's intended purpose then no reason to part with it, but if you are having second thoughts it may be time to move on.
I always though my next car would be 3.6 Outback or turbo Fozzy, and i am driving Tribeca and wouldn't have it any other way, as sad as it was to let the old outback go, it was the right time. And i've had it for 7 plus years put 155k miles on it two trannies, 10 sets of wheels, few suspensions etc, those seats were like molded to my body, but still Tribeca is what I need now and thats what I have.

Yes, I do not believe that any amount of bolt-on items will make another car even close. The S401 and my car (from a suspension standpoint) are identical with the exception of the swaybars and the rear lateral links, neither of which would give us the massive differences we felt. The S401 is extremely communicative with the driver via the pedals and steering, while my car is communicative via my butt.
The S401 suspension is a significant improvement for my car, but the end result is nothing like the silky smoothness that is the S401. There is something fundamentally different between the cars that is not in any service manual that I have seen.
I am convinced there is an "S401 module" somewhere in the car that is full of magic pixie dust and the tears of angels that makes the car the way it is.
I only wish I was not so nervous about driving it to let myself get comfortable with it.

I got pulled over by police a couple days ago because he "didn't see a driver". Okay, fine. I can understand that. But then he issues me a written warning for not wearing a seatbelt (I was wearing a seatbelt the whole time)! WTH? It reminded me of the guy who pulled me over in my Impreza because of a license plate cover and issued me a written warning for expired driver's license (it wasn't). This place is shady with its police that can pull you over for anything.
At peast it was just a warning. Probably they need to justify the stop or something...

It astounds me that a cop sees a car with no visible driver, and thinks they can pull it over.
a) Cars can't drive themselves.
b) Self driving cars wouldn't be conscious enough to pull over for human cops.
c) Even if you pull over a self driving car, what are you going to cite it for?
Sounds to me like someone wanted to bust an illegal import.

Yeah, but to really really get it, you need to have something to compare it to. To my knowledge, on this forum only hansvonaxion, dead91silvia, and dewess can compare it to anything similar (dewess can even compare it to an RSK). All of them say it's quite different from the twin turbos they are used to. Of course, I think dead91silvia needs to use better gas in his GT-B, but it still won't be an S401.

You know, I actually used 110 oct in my wagon a few times. It ran a little better, but nothing as smooth as the S401. Fuel will not eliminate the VoD my GT-B has. I'll know a bit better when my car is back on the road.
The refinements of the S401 are quite different then my GT-B, thats for sure. A million times smoother in ride and drive, and the tuning is just well done. Having also driven a few STi Impreza's, they are not even close either. Only car I have driven thats even close was an A6 Audi, but still nothing even close.

Def one of the best subaru collections here in the US. I would def get a forester xt as a daily if i was you. I think the blitzen outback your building is nice but the truth is it will never compare to the s401 you have. With that said, your STI , s401, and a forester xt would be the best of all worlds. So sell me you type D blitzen stuff =P
imagine your blue sti and blue legacy with this:
That Forester XT is meant to be with them other amazing monsters <3
I guess I should now take a picture of the FXT with the other three....

So I've told a few people this already...
At Boxerfest SoA representatives got to check out the S401 and even take it for a test drive. They said they are interested in purchasing it from me and we will stay in touch. They took my contact information and gave me theirs.
Part of me hopes they buy it, part of me hopes they don't.

I'm actually impressed you took it there! It's also exciting to see that Subaru might be interested, however, I love this car dearly and also hope you keep it... but this is your car.
I'm happy a few more people got to enjoy it. I also hope that I can take it for one more drive before you sell it, if it does indeed happen.

Sadly no. The representative I deal with at the local office is very responsive and I appreciate that, but he isn't the person that makes the decisions on things like this. The guy who does is out of Cherry Hill and isn't even very responsive the the local rep. I'm very frustrated here. I would rather them say they aren't interested outright than continue to ignore me. I'm not going to beg them to buy the car. I'm perfectly happy being the only person on the continent with one. The problem is space. I may have to ship it home to San Diego in a couple years if SoA doesn't buy it and that would be sad for everybody because it would just disappear in storage and nobody would ever get a chance to see it.

I'm tired of waiting on SoA. So I asked IAG if they'd be interested in buying the S401. They passed but said they could help advertise it (they know people in the right circles) as long as they get a cut of the sale. I was told to send them pictures and information on it, but I'm finding that I have shockingly few pictures of the S401. Actually, I have very few pics of all of my cars other than the Imprezaab....
It kinda shows what's actually important to me.

I would not say the S401 is not important to you. I would say its not practical here since you cannot legally drive it. I think if you were able to register it then this would be a different story.

You are 100% correct. I don't even care about the legality of it, but it bothers my wife greatly. The other annoyance is the 96 Octane requirement.

Huh? Who would buy it just to crush it? Do you mean Customs? They don't care because it's in here legally. They've closed the case on its importation. I spent two and a half years with paperwork and fees before it even came here to make sure of that.

So I was looking up something for a friend on the ee20 and came across a chart that says the final drive on the S401 is 3.90. I thought that seems to tall for how quick the S401 accelerates. Would you happen to know the final drive on this beast/beauty?
Yamazaki
12-09-2015, 09:16 PM
3.9 is correct. It's essentially the same transmission in my Impreza, just shorter 5th and 6th, and no DCCD.
