So I took some solo pics at a self-serve car wash before I met up with a friend of mine at the docks to do a mini photoshoot. We then got into each other's car (He has an '05 Tuned by STI Legacy. The comparison/impressions are almost worth their own thread!) and drove back to the car wash for some more pictures. Here they are:

Thanks guys for the compliments on the car. It has definitely spoiled me. I am going to get some other friends and coworkers with Legacys to let me take pics of their cars as well. I've even been thinking of some subtle "upgrades" for the S401.
And if anybody has any comments/suggestions on the photography, I would be glad to hear it. I'm just starting to get interested in it and need whatever advice I can get.

bigger tmic, injectors, turn up the boost, maybe at the very least a retune to get rid of that Valley of Death the twin turbos are known for...though I'm not sure how much sti reworked the power deliver of the s401 compared to the b4's. Did the s401's come with bigger turbos or something compared to the regular b4?

So many soccer daddys and business commuters would be getting into trouble if we had that car here in the states. My advice, since you have a tripod, shoot slower. The pics were still a little dark.

The S401 doesn't have Valley of Death. I didn't really know what everybody was talking about until I drove a friend's B4 RSK. That made me realize that what I previously thought everybody was talking about wasn't even close. The S401 pulls......then pulls harder. The RSK pulls....then take a quick breather before it gets a second wind and starts running again. And it doesn't even run with the same ferocity as the S401. The S401 has been tuned by STI to the point of hanging even with an R33 GT-R (with only suspension upgrades) in an informal drag race (no electronic timer, etc.).
And I wasn't talking about any power modifications. It truly is sublime in that respect. I'm just going to make it a nicer place to be. When I got into the '05 Tuned by STI Legacy I immediately thought "now this is a nice place to be". It felt so upscale compared to my car. And it was the details that made it that way, so it's the details that I'm going to focus on. Don't get me wrong, I like the S401. But it's just a sea of black and grey suede with red stitching in leather. And that's it.
For example, I don't even have a vanity mirror on my sun visor. It's just a piece of cardboard wrapped in some grey, felt-like material. STI made it a performance dream and then called it a day. I'm not complaining (I honestly have no right to complain), I'm just saying that I think it's unfinished and that I can make it nicer.
So many soccer daddys and business commuters would be getting into trouble if we had that car here in the states. My advice, since you have a tripod, shoot slower. The pics were still a little dark.
Okay, I'll see if I can do that next time. I'll be doing a shoot in a couple days with the B4 RSK I was talking about. Thanks for the feedback.
And I think the cars are like M5's or RS6's. So expensive that the people who can afford it don't drive it like it should be driven.
I love the interior lighting on that it look so upscale
very nice car :smt023

Did another photoshoot. With a friend's B4 RSK C type this time. The bumper is RFRB (Run Fast, Run Beautiful), and I like it. I also like the white lines on his taillights. They're a nice touch. I had to do this shoot because he's selling his car (for $5,500, can you believe it?) and I won't get another chance pretty soon.
Photo-wise, I tried to do something with the setting sun, but nothing turned out all that spectacular... And I wasn't sure of what to do with the engine bays. I just don't know how to make it look nicer. Any suggestions?

I would give a testicle for your car. Stunning in every way-have you ever seen the front bumper that Burn-up do for your car-nicest bumper for the BE's by far.Ill try find a pic of it. I looked into importing an S401 to Ireland but as theres no official listing the Revenue commisioners classed it as a blobeye impreza meaning 10k vehicle reg tax! Compared to 3k approx for an ordinary B4-RSK of the same year

Yeah, he didn't want to show his plates (I have NO idea why. It's not like nobody can see it when he's driving around...), so I gave him one of my spare Cali plates. You can kind of see his yellow plate in the side shot pic of both cars.

Yeah, it's a little weird looking even if you're used to seeing it. It's crazy short, but still taller than my car. I love the 660cc engines, though. I long for a Suzuki Cappucino. Being a RWD convertible and weighing only 700kgs, it's the best car in the world to me. Looks like a giant roller skate though .

Yup. Subaru didn't have any in stock so I had to wait a few months for it, but I think it was worth the wait. It goes toward that "upscale" look I've mentioned before.

I got a Cusco frame brace for my RS30 project, but after I found out that it won't fit the N/A Legacy I decided to put it on the S401. Finally, after 3-4 months of it just sitting around, I had time and installed it. It looks nice. It's just too bad that you can't see it unless it's up on a lift...

Took pics with a friend's '95 RS. They don't come more stock than his car (although, like me, he has a steering wheel cover)... We didn't take many because it was windy, rainy, and cold!

Did you drive it? When you drive a BG or BD, THEN, and only THEN will you know the true tyranny of VOD and TT, and then you will realise why i went single turbo :P
Trust me, if i even just had a D rev 3rd gen, let alone the epic win that is the S401, i'd leave it stock in the engine bay.

Actually, I just drove it last weekend when we Seafoamed it and changed out the headlights and grille. Comparatively, it has no balls whatsoever. VOD seemed more apparent with the RSK A/T that I drove because it pulled harder when it did pull (or maybe it was because of automatic?). You could feel the pause more. So I'm glad VOD doesn't show up in the S401 because the S401 puts you in your seat when you accelerate. It would feel jerky if there was a pause. Here's what the '95 RS looks like now:

Yeah, being a little A rev, it'll be gutless as, least powerful, and first TT made. The jump from one of those to a GTB is quite something (from 183 to 206kw), but the BG GTB's still get epic VOD. Oh well, i fixed my BG's short commings good :D
I would LOVE to test drive an S401, i can't imagine it. I've been a passenger in a D rev BH GTB, and that was something in itself :D (Then he got it tuned, and MY GOD...)

It's the same. They call it "WR Blue Mica" here. Not to be confused with "Sonic Blue Mica" of the GC STIs.

The mirror blinkers are a shell purchased from the Subaru dealer. And the blue bulb has been on there since before I bought it.

As long as none of the pieces are missing you can plastic weld it or repair it with some fiberglass.

Umm.... By turning the steering wheel and pushing the gas pedal with my foot...
Sorry I couldn't help it. Anyway, It's been imported legally so I'll have no problems with it. However, It is still registered as a Japanese vehicle and is supposed to retain the Japanese plates. I have to wait a couple years to register it in the US.
However, I plan on trailering it when I take it places because it requires an Octane rating that we don't have in the US. I know I can have some fuel mixed or whatever, but that doesn't help with long trips to faraway meets. I am still stuck with the US gas system. I'd also like to keep the milage down.

Up here in Canada we send our JDM ECU's out to a guy called Rob for a tune, he re-chips them and puts in a map for 91 octane.
heres his email if you're interested: rob.files@gmail.com
Local thread: http://forums.jdmvip.com/Robs_tune_Suba ... eza-2771-t (http://forums.jdmvip.com/Robs_tune_Subaru_Impreza-2771-t)
Also how did you legally import a car younger then 25 years in the US?
Yamazaki
01-07-2012, 11:41 PM
I don't want it re-chipped. Then it wouldn't be an S401 to me. It will remain the way it is: the only mods being the cusco brace (which I'll sell if somebody wants it) and the high-mount brake light. I am even replacing the interior panels (with new ones), repairing the wheel damage, and repainting it.
As for the importation, I have a VERY skilled importer who has been in the business over 25 years. The truth is, even he wasn't sure we would be able to pull it off. The only reason I didn't use the collector/show car import was that EPA wanted proof of show entry and it would've been a temporary entry. I wanted it long term (forever).

On most of the east coast you should have plenty of access to 93 octane at the pumps. That might make it a little easier for you.

02-10-2012, 09:36 AM
Toluene should work. Even if you don't go that route, I've heard that engines that run on 95 ron normally are fine to run on 91, but you wouldn't want to go any lower. Even so, you'll have pretty easy access to 93 here on the east coast. But i'm sure you'll still want to run your 95.5 just to be safe.
And Zac, to answer your question,

toluene?
Yes. Yes. One of the most trusted chemicals to raise octane / octane booster.
IIRC the S401 runs on 100 RON (Research Octane Number)
And for the most part you can get 93 Octane in the states like 98legwag posted.
Here is a really in depth article about off the shelf octane boosters and how the RON system works.
http://sportscarforums.com/f13/toluene- ... -3257.html (http://sportscarforums.com/f13/toluene-my-octane-booster-choice-3257.html)
Here are various chemical formulas to achieve your octane rating.

I also thought about a tune / piggy back to adjust to ethanol enriched fuels that the states keeps pumping out but in the end.. This is a S401.. Better work around the problem then mess with engineering perfection :-D

I don't know about RON, but when I did the personal research comparing the Octanes here with the US rating, it came out to about 95.5 (I don't remember the exact figure anymore, I just rounded to the nearest .5).

I used toluene 20 years ago and don't know whether it's compatible with modern engines, however after a quick Googling...
BESTCHEM Racing Fuel additive - Toluene (114 octane)
Meets military specs: TT-T-548E
Toluene is a pure hydrocarbon (C7H8). I.e. it contains only hydrogen and carbon atoms. It belongs to a particular category of hydrocarbons called aromatic hydrocarbons. Complete combustion of toluene yields CO2 and H2O. This fact ensures that the entire emission control system such as the catalyst and oxygen sensor of your car is unaffected. There are no metallic compounds (lead, magnesium etc), no nitro compounds and no oxygen atoms in toluene. It is made up of exactly the same ingredients as ordinary gasoline. In fact it is one of the main ingredients of gasoline.
Toluene has a RON octane rating of 121 and a MON rating of 107, leading to a (R+M)/2 rating of 114. (R+M)/2 is how ordinary fuels are rated in the US. Note that toluene has a sensitivity rating of 121-107=14. This compares favourably with alcohols, which have sensitivities in the 20-30 range. The more sensitive a fuel is the more its performance degrades under load. Toluene's low sensitivity means that it is an excellent fuel for a heavily loaded engine.
Toluene is denser than ordinary gasoline (0.87 g/mL vs. 0.72-0.74) and contains more energy per unit volume. Thus combustion of toluene leads to more energy being liberated and thus more power generated. This is in contrast to oxygenated octane boosters like ethanol or MTBE, which contain less energy per unit volume compared to gasoline. The higher heating value of toluene also means that the exhaust gases contain more kinetic energy, which in turn means that there is more energy to drive turbocharger vanes. In practical terms this is experienced as a faster onset of turbo boost.
...
Because toluene is such an effective anti knock fuel it also means that it is more difficult to ignite at low temperatures. The Formula 1 cars that ran on 84% toluene needed to have hot radiator air diverted to heat its fuel tank to 70C to assist its vaporization.

Is that the original paint Yamazaki? It seems darker but I love it!! Very interested in the paint colour code used if not... Actually interested either way
That's quite sad for you guys about your petrol/fuel - we get premium 95 at almost every pump and premium 98 at most in Australia
They're phasing out regular 91 and replacing it with E10 and E85 is not yet common but is getting there
Our fuel is great quality (depending on which company's station you get it from as there are the ones to avoid) and we have no problems running JDM engines or ECUs although would still love to have Japan's 100
If you go down the octane booster path this one has by far the best reputation here except I don't know if you can get it there NULON Pro-Strength Octane Booster (http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Fuel_Treatments/Pro-Strength_Octane_Booster) the massive difference there is between fuels etc between countries is ridiculous

I was using the US octane rating system, which is different from the rest of the world (we're the country that doesn't like to use metric either, remember?). So by that system, Japan primarily uses 93 and 95.5 octane, and not 100 (that's a different rating system). So the 95 you are talking about is different than the 95 I was talking about.
I'm dealing with the problem simply by deciding to use race gas. It's expensive, but I don't have to worry about the octane being too low.

I felt so bad when I accidentally left a finger print in one of the parts and then you said dont worry about it and left a bigger one! :smt005
I say thats a good call the leave the good stuff out for now. No one will even notice anyway.

Just curious how one would acquire the BFM cluster from the S401, it's goes to 240kph compared to the regular one that goes to 180kph. Wonder if it would work in a car that already has the regular BFM.

It's the same one in the STi catalogue. It can be ordered by anybody. I don't know the answer to your other question. I would imagine it's plug and play, but I know the clusters have differences, so I am not sure.

D-type does not have a different shape for the cluster. It would physically fit into any BE or BH.
I have seen STI BFMs on Yahoo Auctions Japan, but they have all been 7000¥ or more.

You probably mean 70000 yen.
amgarrety
12-17-2012, 10:52 AM
From auction, no, they could be as low as 7000¥. I've gotten entire grilles for $12 through auction, and body parts are nothing. The fact that Japan has an abundance of JDM parts (obviously), combined with the fact that the 3rd generation Legacy is increasingly expensive to register and thus are becoming less common, that drives the price for parts way down.
rkrenicki
12-17-2012, 11:08 AM
Right, in fact, the last cluster I bought from Yahoo Japan was UNDER 1500¥, but that was oddly cheap as most over there go for around 3000-5000¥.
The STI one is rarer, and therefore a little more expensive than most of the other BFMs, but not incredibly so. The only one I can seem to find on there right now is a White-faced 300km/h one. There are lots and lots of the normal 180km/h BFMs on there, but at least under the normal model codes, I cannot find the 280km/h BFM.

Apparently the BFM cluster from the S401 is only applicable to D models only as per a Japanese part catalogue I found.
rkrenicki
12-17-2012, 02:42 PM
It likely has to do with the wiring. I can see there being a difference on the harness on the D types that would prevent a plug-and-play experience on earlier types. But, in our case.. every BFM would require adaptation, so it would be trivial to adjust the adapter to work around this problem.

So I installed a different interior.... kinda. There are differences with interior that I never noticed before. The location of the air sensor on the S401 is in a different location from earlier models and the 6mt shift boot doesn't swap with the 5mt shift boot. So I left the shifter surround (another reason to keep- it has a production plaque) and blocked off the air sensor. I hope that doesn't cause too many problems.

The air temp sensor is not part of the HVAC controls like most other BE/BH with auto controls? The two JDM control modules I have here have it on there, just on the opposite side of the USDM version.

Why did you want to change the shifter bezel? Does it not match your new interior? What all did you change? The shifter trim is made of the same super-soft plastic that the rest of the console is made of. I ended up changing the cluster surround, the HVAC surround, the small button surround on the right side of the steering wheel (left side for US vehicles), and I wanted to do the shifter surround to match the rest, but I didn't. I also put on that Lancaster6 shifter trim just to see what it looked like. A/T shifter trim on a M/T is weird and doesn't look right.

Nope, it's on the HVAC surround panel. I don't know if it's because the S401 has an air purifier, or all D-type Legacys have it like that. Unfortunately, I never thought of that as something that might've been a design change, so I never paid attention to that when I was in Japan.

It's low on gas and I only have one spare tank left. Looks like I have to do a gas trip soon. I really wish gas for that thing wasn't so damn expensive...
I also tried to apply some faux CF overlay on the interior pieces I removed, but I suck at it so I quit. Maybe dead91silvia can help when he gets here.

I also found out that the battery is having a harder and harder time holding a charge (I have to jump it 4 out of 5 times now). Considering that it's the same battery that came with the car many years ago, it's actually impressive it's lasted this long. Of course, it only has approx. 20K miles on it.

So I am driving the S401 as my DD this week due to the Impreza being down and I learned two things:
1) 5 years is too long to have a set of windshield wiper blades and expect them to keep working properly.
2) If you have a 2 car garage and you are used to backing out of one side, pay attention when backing out of the other side.
So now the S401 rear bumper and the H6 rear bumpers both need to be re-painted. Crap.

03-21-2013, 05:40 PM
So now that I've been driving the sledgehammer that is my Impreza again, I am reminded of the beauty that is the S401. I fully realize that no matter what I do or how much I mod either one of the other cars (the Impreza or the H6), they will NEVER drive as smoothly or responsively as the S401. It kind of makes me sad, but kind of makes me happy too. I know that no matter how hard anybody tries, the S401 is a car that just can't be copied (unless you have millions for R&D). So there will be look-alikes and copy-cats, but when you actually get in and drive, the difference is plainly clear.
And as much as the twin turbo setup is reviled by Subaru owners, it's the twin turbo of the S401 that enables it to be the wonder that it is. I can't imagine any single turbo car driving like this (and I've driven a few). However, a supercharger may be a different story....
