View Full Version : whats up with subaru crank shaft pulleys falling off?

ive been looking at repairable subarus, and have stumbles across three or four where the owner says something like "the crankshaft pulley fell off" or "the crank pulley needs to be welded back on"
obviously you guys cant see what im talking about, but any ideas on what the deal might be?
does that big bolt break? or the threads in the crank strip out?
or that little keyway thing get worn away?
or does the actual snout of the crankshaft break off?
anyone seen anything like this before?

My guess? Incorrect timing belt install with a mechanic who was hurrying to finish up and didn't put the crank pulley nut on all the way or torque it to spec.

i ruined my pulley by not torquing it enough, then i got a group a pulley :D

Older FSM's had incorrectly listed torque specs for the crankshaft bolt. Big boo-boo. :smt021

so while were at it.. why doesnt some one post up the correct torque specs.

Anything between 120-130 ft/lbs will be ideal. I believe ol' manuel said 65 ft/lbs, which are the cam sprockets. That's quite a difference, especially something which is in a constant motion with stress.
Common problems due to the fubar are shearing the woodruff key, complete weardown of the keyway, irreversible damage to the crank pulley due to wobble, and the crank pulley falling off, causing damage to anything in its path.

this happened to me at RI meet...WAS NOT fun having that happen 200 miles from home...but i got a perrin lightweight pulley out of it :grin: :grin:

it makes a horrible noise after the woodriff key goes, i am lucky i caught mine before it went on a path of destruction

at least it didn't happen to you when you were 1500 miles from home.. with a car full of stuff while moving.. LOL. That happened to me.. was actually the first problem I had with my first subaru. Luckily I was able to tighten it on there long enough to make it to the point in FL where i was going!

177N-m or 130.2ft/lbs according to the BE/BH FSM.

Which is more than enough torque to move a manual car in gear, make sure your handbrake is on good. Was pretty sure my car had it in for me as it knocked me off balance, hitting my knees. :lol:

130ft-lbs is almost as much torque as the engine makes at its peak. Just to kind of put that in perspective.
