    Clutch brands??

What makes clutches cost more than others, besides clamping force, and all that stuff. I'm looking for a clutch for an old truck that i'm fixing up, and I only want an OEM replacement, nothing fancy and wondering if I should just get the cheap Duarlast $130 clutch kit, which I can just pick up local instead of getting it shipped to me, or maybe get something a little more expensive. Tell me what you think, thanks in advance.

Note to mods: sorry if this is in wrong forum, I didn't know weather or not to put it in off topic since it isn't really subaru related.

    Re: Clutch brands??

OEM lasts a long time. I had good luck with a duralast heavy duty clutch in my toyota pickup. I sold the truck 100k miles after replacing the clutch and it still felt quite strong. Now clutches in performance cars, that's a different matter entirely.

OEM Exedy if they have it for your truck. I had a Duralast clutch kit in my CRX and that thing was dead after a month or two.

    Re: Clutch brands??

The price differences in clutches of the SAME LEVEL (as in, OEM for OEM, or 'stage1') is a combination of materials used, R&D costs, manufacturing costs and price markup.

If you are looking just to get the truck back on the road, Exedy clutches are pretty much the OEM supplier for a lot of cars, and their quality is very good. They are fairly cheap because they sell so many units (economies of scale).

not sure what kind of pick up you got but when i used to be into pick up trucks(had a 86 toyota pick-up) and all the guys in my truck club ran centerforce 2 clutches there may be new versions out sence then this was like the 90's. but we all swore buy them as the best back then.

    Re: Clutch brands??

Cheap clutches are cheap. You get what you pay for. I've seen cheap clutches melt down, fly apart, or plain wear out WAY too fast. Kias/Hyundais use cheap clutches from the factory, and I've seen many of them that were completely gone by 50k. Some of that is probably due to the kind of people who drive them, but they are prone to early failure.

Exedy clutches are made by Daiken, which is an OE supplier for many manufacturers, esp. Japanese manufacturers. I've heard of many, many people using them without problems, and I just recently installed one in my Legacy when I swapped to a 5spd and it has worked flawlessly so far.

    Re: Clutch brands??

^^ however, I would say that Exedy stock clutches are available for "cheap".

    Re: Clutch brands??

I looked into exedy however because of the ease of buying one local, and because I'm going to sell the truck soon after I get the clutch in I'm just going to buy one from a local auto supplier
