    throw out bearing

So i'm pretty sure my throw out bering is going so how bad is it to drive with a throw out bearing that is on its way out? I would like to replace it as soon as possible, but i'm working on a project car now and would like to wait untill its done to replace the clutch. How long do you think I have?

    Re: throw out bearing

every throwout bearing ive had go on me, regardless of the manufacturer, ive had to YELL at the passenger " OH MY GOD, THIS THING IS MAKING SOME HORRIBLE FRIGGAN NOISES, WE PROBABLY SHOULDNT DRIVE THIS"

shortly thereafter the throwout bearing disintegrates and your left stranded with a bunch of bits in your bell house, then you may need a new clutch/plate/etc. depending on the vehicle.

but ive had vehicles go years with a chirping/whining/warbling throwout bearing.

if its just a little noisy, dont worry about it and plan on doing it when it gets louder and you have a clutch laying around to throw in...

I just read that article and according to page 19, It is actually most likely my pilot bering that is going. I figgured that sence the noise was only when the clutch was about to engage, at that point there was more pressure on the throw out bearing, but that article says if the noise occurs just as the clutch is being clamped its the pilot bearing.

So can anyone give me info on the pilot bearing?

    Re: throw out bearing

Pilot bearing is in the flywheel and supports the very tip of the trans input shaft. It only spins when there is a difference between transmission speed and engine speed (i.e. only when the clutch is disengaged/pedal depressed)

    Re: throw out bearing

what a coincidence that you bumped this because I just pulled my engine to do a clutch job today. I think, in my case anyways, it was the pilot bering that was making the noise. I didn't take the pressure plate off yet, but I looked at it and the cover thing was off and I could see that a few of the ball bearings were missing. I will update this if I remember after I get the bearing out.

    Re: throw out bearing

Buy a TSK kit. Google pdm snout repair or tranquil 5mt snout kit. Much better than a regular TO bearing. Makes clutch engagement much smoother.

    Re: throw out bearing

    This will happen:

That is my throw out bearing. It started chattering, 4 months later it got really super loud and I could no longer shift gears.
The clutch disc wasn't too badly worn, it was still intact. The pressure plate was actually in good shape too except it had a perfectly circular trench cut around the fingers. The inside of the throwout bearing wore away, looks like it started to wobble shredding the inside and causing the actual throw outbearing to deform badly.

    EDIT:
Sorry didn't realize probably has nothing to do with the original author anymore.

    Re: throw out bearing

the rule of thumb here is if you are unsure of anything in your clutch area you're going to have pull engine anyhow so just replace it all. seriously fork the extra money get a clutch kit, fork, (and if you didn't replace it already) a separator plate for the back of the engine. it will save you a million stress points and maybe a stroke when you lift it out and you miss diagnosed it.

    Re: throw out bearing

Most (good) clutch kits come with new pp, disk, pilot bearing and to bearing for a reason.

    Re: throw out bearing

wow Huffer you are big on that TSK thing... I didn't put one in lol
And for all you people out there saying that I should replace everything anyways, I know that and I always intended to replace everything, I was just curious as to what the noise was so I know my tranny wasn't going to blow up or anything.
And just so everyone knows I ended up putting an Exedy OEM replacement kit in and its working fine.

I'm big on it because it's worth it - the TSK protects the input shaft from being damaged.
