Perce Neige Rally - Maniwaki & Lac Cayaman Ice Track

I haven't posted here in quite a while. Well I've been busy, very busy

A few of us (16) from the Ottawa Subaru Club went up from Ottawa to watch the Rally and take a few laps around the ice track on Lac Cayaman. Its very handy that one member has a year round cottage about 30 minutes from the event. His driveway has never looked better

I had the only Legacy but don't think I got left behind, I was typically the instigator of many a drift session on the back roads. I recently installed a video system in my car for auto-x events consisting of a bullet camera and digital video recorder. I put it to good use during this event.

All the cars save four were WRX's. There was my Legacy GT, two STi's and a really nice swap. This is a complete STi Ver 6 RA swap from Japan with functioning DCCD.

To get to the Rally we took the back roads, very empty back roads. Unfortunately I did not have the video recording this drive as there was much drifting to be had. Here's some of the only video of the "fun" section. Its a very beautiful spot.

The rally was great, first one I attended. We drove down these same roads ourselves, not quite at the same speed though.

After the Rally we headed out to the track on the lack. We arrived just as they were fininshing racing so the track was perfect. Ice covered with snow, lots of traction. After a couple of hours we wore the corners smooth and traction was hard to come by. The next day it warmed up and the track was covered in water and slush. Completely different handling and lots of spray. A few people put the cars into the snowbanks and we pulled them out with nylon tow straps. No significant damage past bent plates, all the cars drove out on their own.

    Another WRX

I've got video of the STi going off. It was quite funny to see it happen. Again, after pulling the car out it was just a matter of removing all the packed in snow and back in business, nothing damaged. Only one Impreza with WRX swap suffered some body damage and he's really not that concerned so its a good thing.

Alan must have stuffed it half a dozen times. He was having a blast and we weren't complaining.

Matt in the Ver VI Sti followed me for a lap to film. Click to view.

    The Wagon in action:

Great action shot. I'm going sideways around the corner with the nose pointed at the snow bank gunning it in 3rd gear.

And the video from my car :

    Saturday:

    1) First couple of laps in my Legacy

    2) More (agressive) lapping as the afternoon progressed. Shows Bob's car just after he took out the left side of his car. Poor guy must have found the only hard snow bank on the entire track.

    3) Following Matt's Impreza STi Version VI featuring the "JOEY CAM" hanging outside. The ice is very polished at this stage and traction is hard to come by on the corners.

    4) Spinning out and pulling a running 360 in the Legacy. RX-8 owner is in the passenger seat and very amused I keep it going.

    5) Lapping with Rock ahead of me in the Sti

    6) Chasing after two STi's, Rock & Matt's

    Sunday:

    1) Matt takes it in for a closer look at the snow bank

    2) Following the WRX crowd, Alan ditches it at the far end. If you look close you can see him way ahead of me.

    3) Following Vandy's ? WRX around the track

    4) Matt follows and films my run then I let him pass and film his run around the track

    5) Steve tears it up around the track

    6) Following Marc in his Silver WRX for a lap, watch the spray he throws up. Then the corner claims another victim

    7) Me in the Legacy going at it for a few laps

    WOW, VERY NICE POSTING!

That looks like it was an amazing couple of days... and nice to see that there's actually snow somewhere. Moncton is supposed to be in the snowbelt of New Brunswick and we have nothing here right now. Terrible winter weather for winter sports.
