    Dead's 98 BD GT/K Limited Turbo conversion complete 8-12-16

1998 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT Limited Sedan
ej25 twin cam, 4EAT auto (stock)

I decided to add prices and places I got the parts. I have had so many people ask where I got my bumper and what not. I also listed the years I got them since the market does change. (added 2-27-13)... Got the idea from argaretty.

This is my weekend ride. I used to work for a friend that fixed insurance totals. Before I got "White Lightning", I wanted a 2.5 RS Impraza REALLY bad! Part of the reason was my Silvia was getting me in trouble driving every day (street racing) and I wanted a 4 door. I had worked on and driven tons of Outbacks, but this was the first GT I got to drive. When it came to the shop, it was hit in the front and in need of a bumper and some metal work. I drove it out to State Patrol Inspection and feel in love with it! It was a one owner and super clean inside!

This was by far the nicest car I had ever driven that felt solid. I asked the boss how much and he said "no, it goes to the lot. I'll get you another one". I said fine, but "this is what I want, a limited 98-99 GT with an auto". The auto would keep me from racing and I liked the darker interior color of 98-99. I looked, he looked and finally one day one came up at the auction. This was about 4 months after I first drove the white one. It was bright red and that was the one color I DIDNT want. It was hit in the right rear door, but would take little to make it drive and parts cost was low, it was all labor. It sold for more then I could afford.

I finally asked him "how much for the white one?". He thinks about it, knowing I wanted it, but knowing that he could make a lot from the car. He says $4800 and it's yours!" Mind you this was 2007 so she was worth about 6-7K. I said ok, I'll see what I could do. I had 2K saved and then got a car loan for the rest and called and said "if you sell it, I'll quit. I got a loan and will have the check by the end of the day!". He was shocked, but said ok. I got my car the next day!

I got it with about 164K on the OD. It now has 244K and still going strong. I did have a slight problem with the original motor and spun a bearing, but thats the only thing other then the normal stuff. She now has been blessed with a plethora of JDM parts, and any unique OEM parts I can find. I dont plan on selling her any time soon, so I hope who ever I marry, likes it!

HAWT!!! love those sky shots. And I still say sand and re-clear your spare tire cover. Add a layer of 3M protective film and your good to go.

    Re: Dead's 98 GT sedan

This was almost 3 years ago... I T-boned a Ford Fusion that made an illegal U-turn in front of me... Guy was a moron... This was his rental because he wrecked his truck the week before and totaled him SUV 6 months before...

$4000 damage to my GT. He tried to buy me off for $300...

Hard to tell, but it's got a bent rail... still does. I'll get around to fixing it later...

And his car... I think I totaled it...

    Re: Dead's 98 GT sedan

This is a late update, but an update none the less...

I decided to replace my flaky paint driver side trim, repaint my rocker cover and also replace the crappy fender I had bad body work done on.

Before... the car was wrecked before I got it and they didnt use the right adhesion promoter...

I also take my car places it shouldn't go so my rocker covers were hashed...

Found out that both doors were replaced at one time. They did a nice repair though!

What not to do to hold your fender and bumper in line... I didnt care when I fixed it a couple years ago, but it started to bug me...

And I also bottomed out the bumper on a road gutter out in the woods and I just told myself I would replace the finder all together...

    Ready for the new fender...

This is the most recent pic of it all back together..

    Re: Dead's 98 GT sedan

..Hmmm no offense, but that's NOT $4000 worth of damage lol! I hope that's just ur insurance quote and not what you paid to change a fender, turn signal, and add a small patch of bondo on the bumper with some paint:-o ..pulled frame rail with or without welding, no way that's $4000... jmtc:-S

    Re: Dead's 98 GT sedan

I had 3 estimates and the lowest was at $3,700 and the most at $4,300. GMAC paid me $3,900. All the body shops missed the second bend in the frame behind the crossmember. I'm also a pain in the ass when it comes to parts. They tried to sell me aftermarket body parts and they are crap. The lights are ok, but aftermarket Subaru fenders are peaces of crap. I've had to install way too many of them.

    Parts list:
    Bumper cover
    bumper reinforcement
right fender (I did fix it and the time I put into it, I should have just got a new one.)
    right fog light
    right marker light
    right head light
    bug guard
base coat, clear coat, primer, sealer, filler, other odds and ends...

    Time:
2 hours for dent in hood
    7 hours frame work (bent/kinked sub-frame)
6 hours paint and prep and blend

Mind you, after all this. I fixed the bumper (kinda, it was beyond repair and still is distorted and drives me nuts), fixed the fender (have since replaced with a perfect one), got used lights, never did the frame work or fixed the hood (bug guard covers the dent )... I've been a bodyman for about 15 years now and I know what I can do it for, but for the everyday Joe that takes their car to the shop, the repair would be 4K with new OEM parts... The end cost for me was about $600 for parts and paint. I'm going to be ripping it all apart as soon as I get a JDM bumper and lights, so it might be a while... My Silvia was a complete different thing as is my Volvo project. I didnt drive them everyday like I do the Subie...

    Re: Dead's 98 GT sedan

Alright, time for another update... I've done a bit of work in the last few months with more on the way... I updated mods list and such.

First thing... I got a broke front sway bar. Ended up replacing it with a 02-03 bar from Subaru. It was $56 bucks and 1mm bigger so I figured I couldnt lose..

Next big thing was my JDM lights.. got a good deal by chance on Ebay... $173 shipped and in great shape with pigtails...

    Before:

This was bugging the crap out of me.. My Fog light has a small crack at the top and lets water in. Took it out to drill a couple holes in the bottom so it will drain. just waiting for when I get a JDM bumper and lights...

My cat was making sure I was doing it right... haha

    About 4 hrs later...

This is the last good pic I took... My bug guard was junk so I took it off... Debating if I should get a new one of repaint the front end and leave it off...

    Random pic... Hauling my Kayak!

Good thread, but I have to correct you. "finder" is actually spelt "fender". It was driving me nuts trying to figure out what you were saying until you posted pictures of your dented "finder" (fender).

Ok I gotta ask. How do you break a front sway bar?

1993 Legacy LS AWD: 4eat, mostly stock, going SUS, higher mileage, turbo grille, and lots of one off additions. (Mine)
1994 Turbo Wagon: bone stock other than a snorkus delete and aftermarket stero. (Mine)
1997 Outback: 5mt, winter package, tinted windows, tow bar with wiring, and slowly becoming a limited. (Moms)

As for the swaybar, I was backing out of the driveway and it just snapped! Earlier in the day I took a freeway interchange, warning speed of 35mph, at 85mph and it held! But backing out of the driveway it broke... haha.... God loves me! =)

I was told by my wholesale guy at Subaru, broke sway bars are common for BG's, but not got GT's. But he knows I beat the crap out of my poor car...

Posting pics later of my winkers... car needs a wash BAD!!!

    Re: Dead's 98 GT sedan

Crappy pics, but oh well... haha

I just got my old sub/box/amp back from a buddy I sold it to a few years agon. I dont know why, but I wanted it. I sold it to him about 3 years back for $300 and got it back for $200... Its a 1000W Kicker CVR and a 1200W Phoenix Gold amp... Ported box... bla bla... It hits hard. I'm gonna end up putting it in the Pulsar. I have a 8" sub for the GT, but no box for it yet.

And one of my new JDM Side markers Not yet wired, but I'll get around to it. I need to do the city lights in my projectors also, so I'll do them at the same time...

I also got some 07 Impreza 16" 5 spokes, but dont have a pic yet. Still wondering if I want to use them or not. I got them for $100 so it was a deal I couldnt pass up..

Man I love those SUS grilles. I don't know why but I do. Quick question. Any chance you could get the SUS trunk badge for me?

    Re: Dead's 98 GT sedan w/JDM goods

Well, I got my bumper all finished! Just not on the car yet...

U-Pal primer after a butt load of mud/plastic work...
PPG DBC Base Coat (OEM White)
    PPG DC4000 Clear
    Sprayed with an Iwata LPH400...

This is it all ready to be installed... I was waiting to get my frame and core support work fixed, but not sure when I'll get to it...

now to show how much work I put into it... I can get a little anal about something being clean...
    Cleaning up the fogs...

Couple of pic of the bumper damage... I have some body work pics, but they are on my phone... I'll post them another time...
