Andrewtech Gear Oil Cocktail = Amazing

Just though I'd post up my impressions of the ear oil cocktail that Andrewtech Automotive uses for their Subaru 5-speed gearboxes. Andrewtech is the most respected Subaru transmission builder in the nation, so I trust their recommendation.

The cocktail is 3 quarts of Redline Lightweight Shockproof, and 1 quart of Motul Gear 300 oil.

Before putting in the cocktail, I'd get awful grinding in 2nd, and 3rd gears. The gearbox felt sloppy and gooey when cold, and was overall a pain to shift. Now, I have yet to get any gear to grind, and the gear engagement is sooo much more smooth and easy. It was pricey for all the fluid (~$100), but totally, 100% worth it.

I should add that I have the stock 160k transmission, and whatever gear oil was in it before was cheap generic gear oil.

I'd caution you about that stuff. Everyone comments how good it makes the tranny shift in the short run, just to return with the same problem or worse (over thousands of miles), according to some. U. Scotty even mentions that the concoction should be replaced at 20k intervals.

This is not Uncle Scotty's cocktail.

I do know that running straight Redline shockproof is not good for the transmission in the long run. I trust Andrewtech in either case however.

I'll probably change it every 20k just to be safe. $100 ever year and a half isn't that big of a deal.

Ahhh, I see. My mistake. I'm looking for something as well, as 3rd in my Outback makes a clinking noise when put in fast, and reverse whines more than I'm used to in my similar mileage Forester.

uncles scotty is bad because of the mix of dino and synth oils, the property of the two change viscosity very differently, and mix air into the oil and froth the oil. a mix of synth isnt bad. motul is a great oil also and is probally the reason the trans is shifting smoother

Negatory, you can even mix synthetic and conventiol engine oil without adverse effects. The molecules don't actually mix, this is how semi-synthetics work. I don't use but have been to many Valvoline classes, Mobil has the same info.

Back to the original topic, I have used uncle scotty's mix that I purchase from Grimmspeed and working great so far (under 20k miles though).

US mix doesn't do well in the long run because you're putting syncromesh oil into a gearbox that has parts that even the syncromesh bottle even says will not play well with the fluid.

LW Shockproof isn't recommended by Redline to be used straight up in subaru gearboxes, you're probably better off going straight motul 300 TBH.

I am using the Andrewtech cocktail and it made no difference. I'm going back to Subaru Extra-S.

maybe you didn't have a serious problem to warrant it? Most of these "it cured my grind!" just bandaids the real issue with the gearbox, not actually cure it anyway...

Gear oil is a bandaid, but its a cheap bandaid that lasts a while.
