I learned how to drive on city roads, parkways and expressways in and around New York City. As a result, any time I get on a limited-access road, even if it's literally just to exit at the next offramp, I enjoy it.

What highways do you drive on? I'm familiar with only a few of the expressways in Japan's Kanagawa and Tokyo prefectures, such as the Bayside Road (Wangan), and other pieces of the Shuto and Tomei expressways, such as route 4 and the world-known C1 line.Originally Posted by YamazakiSubaru

Then do you know the view from Shutokou? I'll be down there next week. I'll take pictures and video. It's really a sight to see. Especially at night.Originally Posted by ryu_haneda

Looking forward to it. I'm not exactly sure where Shutokou is... I've never been to Japan in person but I've seen videos of people driving on the ring roads and Bayside road. Like this one, for example:Originally Posted by YamazakiSubaru

The first video you posted is Shutokou (it even says it in the title). You called it Shuto expressway (I either say Capital Area Expressway or Shutokou). But you don't get a very good idea of what's around you in that video. You need to see how high up the Shutokou is... that's what makes it special.Originally Posted by ryu_haneda

Actually, I almost never go to YouTube. I have to admit that I haven't seen too much outside what I've seen/where I've been personally. Like I said, I'll try to take some decent video (I have no idea how well it will turn out though). Hopefully, it won't disappoint. I'll try to take some video (or just pictures) of the trip down as well so people can see the countryside of northern/central Japan.Originally Posted by ryu_haneda

Whoa! Lots of country roads votes!
I grew up in suburbia, IA. But always loved to go out into the country. It's a great feeling of freedom out there. Paved or not, I love the open road!
Wow, the first video was crazy! It's like a concrete jungle! And the second one blew my mind! Felt like I was floating in space.

I grew up driving in concrete jungles and mazes of highways. There's a different kind of experience there as opposed to the open curvy backroads. Then again, not many things can grab your attention quite like deer running across a county road at night...

I'm back. I wasn't able to get video the first couple nights due to inclement weather, and the video I took the next night is crap. I'd need an actual video camera instead of a regular camera that has video capability for it to turn out right I think. We have a few people on these boards that live there, I wonder if one of them would be willing to take video of the scenery (instead of just the road).

How high up is the Shutokou? I've driven pretty far down beneath street level (and sometimes, very high above it) on some highways in the past. I used to live in New York City, and one of my favorite highway intersections is the Interstate 95/Interstate 87 interchange between the Bronx and Manhattan boroughs. It's a complicated, HIGH interchange.
The other is the 95-278-678-295 "Bruckner Interchange" in the Bronx. Youtube or Google those and you'll see...

Holy crap, Bruckner Interchange is awesome! I just checked it out. And doing so gave me an idea for how to help you see what I've been talking about....Originally Posted by ryu_haneda
For shutokou, just go to Google maps street view and check out the expressway in several different areas. You may have to zoom in crazy close to get it on the right place since so many roads/streets are on top of one another. Follow it around for awhilt too, because sometimes it's up in the sky and sometimes it's underground.
