BD/BK/BG dash & cluster swaps. (work in progress)

Not finished... just souring info... correct my info if I am wrong ... please post pics ..

    [ Cluster ]

    JDM/EDM/USDM GD cluster:
-All GD clusters are the same size , but most of the time its the STi cluster everyone wants.
-You will need to trim a fair amount of inner support from the dash & legacy cluster shroud.
-You will need to shave down some of the rear plastic from the cluster.
-Wiring nightmare.... unless you have the original harness.
-The cluster is not as wide as the legacy so there are gaps on the ends...

    JDM GC v.3 STi Clusters:
-they fit right in. Only thing is you gotta convert to the oldschool speedo cable, and ditch the electronic.
    -custom mounting brackets
-only pre face lift, so version 4 and up are totally incompatible.
-You lose the door open functionality of the legacy. The legacy says what door is open, the impreza just shows that a door is open.
-You might want to find one with the 240k speedo though, as standard only goes to 180k... (111mph)
-Additional lights for intercooler waterspray, and if you get one with it, a DCCD display.
-Reuben has done this..... will get more info.

I'll be keeping my eye on this. Would love more info on the GD cluster swaps...the 2g legacy cluster is so bland!

    Re: To-be-Stickied - BD/BK/BG dash & cluster swaps.

is there a jdm bd cluster that swaps right in? A higher reading tach would be nice if I get around to actually doing what I have planned.

    Re: To-be-Stickied - BD/BK/BG dash & cluster swaps.

yeah I mean if I had a wrx swap that revved to 7500 or so it would be nice to have a cluster that went past 120mph and 7k rpm

yeah it would work fine. I just thought it would be nice to have one than went farther than 7000

Can it be as easy as just putting a new gauge face on that reads mph? I would love a nice kph cluster with mph readings.

Re: BD/BK/BG dash & cluster swaps. (work in progress)

Just thought I'd throw my 2c worth in.

Firstly, I had the JDM V4 STi cluster in my old gen 2. Not a direct fit unfortunately but you were able to live with it.

Also the Australian clusters go up to 220 or 240 kph. Cant remember off the top of my head. Not sure what the USDM ones get up to in mph

ok. just so everyone is aware (because there is borderline ZERO information on this topic out there) YEEES it is possible to do a 02-05 wrx or sti cluster swap into the 2nd gen legacy. It's a decent amount of work, but imo, totally worth it.

What you need is the wrx cluster and pigtails, the cluster shroud from the legacy, and the instrument cluster diagrams from both cars.

Drop the glove box, steering wheel, center console, remove radio etc, remove old cluster, and take out the dash. take apart both cluster shrouds.
You will use the Legacy shrouds, both black and clear. line up the legacy stuff to wrx cluster, trim plastic where needed, and drill a new hole for the tripometer. Personally, I just drilled one hole at the very top of the shroud and stuck a screw in it allowing the bottom tabs to help retain. Realistically though, keeping this thing air tight secure is not really necessary.... it's not going anywhere. You will also need to dremmel or whatever the bump on the inner/top portion of the dash where the top of your new cluster is going to go (the wrx wires get in the way here). trim, test fit, and repeat. Having fun yet?
K, now what I did was go through the wrx pigtail and solder male connectors to all 40ish wires. Draw up a chart with the name of each light, pin #, and correspond to the other car. I believe I started looking at the wrx diagram first. Most everything is very self explanitory. there are a few wires that will not be used ( like 5+) from both cars. I didnt mess with the seat belt timer stuff on legacy side because the light comes on anyways and not nec. also, you dont need traction control stuff etc. There will also be one or two wires that will need to be ran to ground, that are not listed in the diagrams (they will be normal ground colors).

Also, you will need to utilize the M/T wrx vehicle speed sensor, which is the 3 wire sensor. the middle pin can be ran straight to ground, one goes to power, and one to the cluster (look at the diagrams). I used the existing black white wires, soldering the GB wire to the black and GY to the white. I think the middle pin was GW.. solder, run straight to ground next to the pitch stop.

You will have a gap on the sides unless you tack some plastic from the un-used wrx shroud on there. Barely noticeable though.

I'm going to repost and paraphrase some info I put in my build thread over here. I'm installing my cluster this weekend after I get the parts necessary to reprogram the odometer. I'll take some pictures after it is installed.

Here's a Google Docs spreadsheet for the wiring necessary to use an 02-04 WRX cluster in a 98-99 Legacy. 95-97 Legacy will require a three wire speed sensor swap and wiring. An 05 cluster will work as well but you'll have to use a relay to invert the ABS light behavior. Keep in mind that sometime between 02 and 04 the WRX diagrams reversed the A and C connectors. Mine is made from the 02 WRX diagram where the A connector is leftmost when looking at the cluster from the back and C is rightmost. I haven't wired this cluster into my car yet but I am working on it soon, and as far as I know this diagram will be correct. If not, I'll update it.

With a minor change or two this diagram will also work for an 04 STI cluster with the red lighting and gauge sweep startup. I might try to score one of those someday.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

Here's a picture of one I built last week to put in my car with the side gaps covered.

Here's one (not mine) that exaggerates the gaps and shows the fitment. The flash makes it look worse.
