    diesel engine....

So i was thinking that even though the Subaru Diesel engine isnt sold in the USA why not import it and install in in one of the USDM cars.

So this is what I am aiming at. I would like to see if anyone knows how easy a Swap would be. I would imagine it would be as easy as swapping any other Boxer motor into the car but one never knows.

As far as emissions I dont have to worry about them in my state.

And finally where would i go about finding one?

    diesel engine....

I'd imagine the main difference in a diesel swap vs a normal swap would be needing to swap or work out a completely different fuel system, potentially.

    Re: diesel engine....

you would need a whole new drivetrain, all of the electronics, new fuel system. you would basically need a whole car to do a possible swap. it would be a huge PITA.

    Re: diesel engine....

If you have a shop around that deals with Halfcut's go talk to them. If you did one of those conversions, that would be the way to go. You would also want the fuel tank with all the components since the pump are most likely not available here...

A halfcut is the the complete front end of a car if you didnt know. Most people get them for doing SR, RB, STI, and so on swaps. Should have everything needed. A friend of mine was trying to talk me into doing a diesel swap in my Toyota rock crawler and the halfcut was going to be about $2500, plus tax for about a 1993 ish Hilux Surf, including all body parts...

Just something to think about... And with it being Subaru, the wiring is gonna be a pain....

I don't think newer Subarus are any more difficult than any (newer) other car. Especially american cars. You can't compare a car from 1993 to a new car - all the older ones are going to be easier. I've actually found Subaru's wiring methods to be much more sensible than most auto companies.

    Re: diesel engine....

When it comes to wiring from swaps, I'm told Subaru are the worst since they incorporate the engine and chassis harness's together. After parting out about 30 cars, the most difficult ones to rip apart wiring wise is Subaru. Nissan's are cake, and so are Hondas. If your doing a swap in a Honda, they are plug and play. Nissan is the next easiest and takes little to make them work, mostly just extending RHD to fit LHD. Toyota is about the same as Nissan. It's not really the age, its the engineering.

I'm only comparing them to other JDM cars. I hate working on GM's and any other domestics. They wire a car just to piss you off! I wont ever get into the Euro cars... All I will say is I love my girl too much to tell her I hate her Jetta... haha

    Re: diesel engine....

GM/Ford wire cars specifically to cut costs. Nissan, Honda & Subaru TEND to do things more for an efficiency standpoint.

But back to the topic at hand - the easiest way to do this? Import a half-cut (both ends, front and back) Legacy Diesel from the UK or Japan (more likely the UK) - buy a chassis (a rear-ended car at auction would be cheapest) that matches here in the USA, and swap everything over. You'll have to deal with a RHD setup but that's not an issue. Doing it this way will be more expensive to begin with but will save a lot of headaches down the line. You'll have every part you'd need.

Only problem with these kinds of situations is that there will be next to no Subaru tech in the USA that will be able to diagnose anything that goes wrong. But hey - blazing a trail is never easy.

Just build the motor from scratch it would be cheaper than everything here. Really all youd need to do is the heads cause a shortblock is a shortblock no matter the fuel.

From what I hear the subaru diesel engines are dogs... nobody likes them over there. The cost of swapping one would be so much that you could have just bought yourself a vw tdi, which gets great reviews and now youd have a spare car.

    Re: diesel engine....

diesel engines are stronger than their petrol counterparts. the block, pistons/rods, and the intake manifold are usually much much stronger. is this the case with the subaru engines? if so that would be a mean and strong hybrid if you got the block and rods for a petrol turbo build.

a huge wallup of torque around 2k, sounds like a EJ25D LOL. I love tuned diesels, you can get so much from them with just a tune. like the chip for VW TDi's one chip and you have 180hp and over 400 lb/ft.

    Re: diesel engine....

The engine is strong, tough it's still "young"
Get one from Sweden/Norway/Denmark/Finland. They are left hand drive so you don't have that problem.

Jeremy Clarkson actually likes the boxer diesel now that they have gotten rid of most of the problems from the first batches.

And another thing, Diesel is not cleaner than petrol. The govornment promised lower taxes on newer diesel powered cars with particle filter but now they have increaced the taxes on it because it's not as clean as they first tought. The public is really pissed over this.

All i can tell you about the swap is that it's going to be easier than changing a blown egnine in a Cat 785D Offroad Minetruck. It takes a week with two mechanics working round the clock.

ya I looove the cold and the snow here in Minnesota though its not close to how cold it gets for you, and I would move to Alaska in the summer if I could to avoid the hot summers we have been getting here, around 26.6 Celsius in your lingo, and thats just too hot for me my comfort maxes out at what I would refer to as 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I want to move to Sweden but it will take a while to save enough to get setup over there.
if I wanted to lower my car I'd have gotten a GT!

    Re: diesel engine....

If I could ever get the money to get one of these imported over I would buy a manual Baja and do the diesel motor swap into it and put the exhaust out through the bed with dual exhaust stacks, lol. Sorry, thats the redneck in me and I think it would look sick that way. Imagine a 2 tone (camo over black bedliner) Baja coming down the road with custom pipe bumpers front and rear with a winch mounted on the front and 2 stacks out behind the cab through the bed with that sweet sound of the Subaru Diesel boxer motor. I ever get that done and I promise there will be a write up with pics and video and sound clips, lol. Probably go on vacation up north for yall to check it out and have some fun in it.
