    turbo build info

so i just found a complete Ej20 with all accessories including turbo TD04 and 5 speed transmission. with a 30 days warranty with ECU and i believe the intercooler, shipped for 4Gs. has 72K on it

ive been reading up on doing the swaps, and this should be all plug and play into my 01 leggy for the most part.. correct?

will i also need the rear diff?

    Re: wrx swap

Is your car a 5mt or 4eat? If auto then obviously clutch pedal and lines, if it's a 5mt I'd leave it in there so you wouldn't have to change the rear diff. Wiring is a little bit more than plug and play unless you have someone like East Coast Swappers do it for you. I'd pass on the crossmember, just notch it the then reinforce with clearance for the uppipe.

    Re: wrx swap

    1. That is a lot of money for an ej20
    2. You need whatever rear end matches the tranny
    3. sti is completely up to you depending on price comparo. But figure about $1000 for a sti turbo and intercooler
    4. You need a turbo cross member or will need to notch yours for the exhaust

    Re: wrx swap

WRX swaps are going up in price as JDM stuff is not as accessible, and less lower mileage complete (turbo, tmic, harness and ecm) 02-06 wrx's that aren't blown up or already stripped. But if his car is still running mind as well wait to find a better deal, I'm sure there are some to be found, just not the $2k like they were three years ago.

ej205s are a dime a dozen now. for $4000 you could easily buy an entire car and pull the motor and anything you want then sell the rest

    Re: wrx swap

oh and I forgot to mention this is far from plug and play. you will need the wiring harness that matches the engine not just the ecu. Then you will either need to merge the wiring yourself if your good with that kind of thing (nightmare). Or have it done, look into iwire, they are very good and do it for about $600, which is cheap compared to others

    Re: wrx swap

If you're serious about a swap you should buy a whole car to pull parts from other wise you'll find yourself being nickle and dimed on stuff you didn't think to buy. A whole car can be had for around what that motor is going for, so I'd stay clear of it.

    Re: wrx swap

everything STi is mad expensive.. so i have the money now.. but the questions is, will i have it when it breaks down the road lol. i think a WRX set up would be just as fun in my leggy.

i was considering that set for 4gs i mentioned earlier, and going through the motor, cams, new turbo, intercooler etc.

I think for the money you can't go wrong with the WRX swap. Find a wrecked car so you have everything you need right there and you can sell off anything you don't use to re-coup some of the investment.

Think about all the other parts you can use on a parts car too! Brakes, scoop, tranny, springs/struts, interior..........

    99 LGT H6 Limited OBP

A little bit of Wrx, a little bit of 2.5RS, a little bit of STi, a LOT of SVX!

How mechanically inclined are you? Or with wiring for that matter? Just curious because I have seen a lot of people with good intentions of swapping but end up selling for a myriad of reasons. Just know what you are getting yourself into. Might be easier to buy one already done. Just my 2 cents.

Tranny alone with be over $3000

Luckily any subaru engine / tranny combo work together. The sti 6 speed is just a lot stronger and geared lower

Oh. WOW. You need to hold onto your cash for about a year and do some real research, not just hit the post thread button... Read over a few MR1 threads - several times. Read the swaps faq, the stickied threads and the successful swaps. Call up shops in your area or time zone that have done this work and ask them what would be involved and the cost.

30 day warranty means bugger all if you can't complete the swap in a day - every day you have with the engine and it's not running means you lose a day off your warranty.

    Re: wrx swap

ok.. so i dont think this swap is going to happen after listening to huffer and doing research all last night, all these WRX parts are a little too expensive and seems like fitment for me for this swap wont happen over a long weekend lol

so in the time being, ive found two different 2000 legacys

ones a GT 5spd fully loaded with 183K, rust over each rear wheel, needs tires, guy wants 3900

other is an L, 5spd, CLEAAANN inside, 138K, rust over each rear wheel, new tires, guy wants 2200

i figure, buy the car cheap, use the left over insurance money to rebuild the motor with turbo pistons, new crank etc. and then sell one car for a turbo set up, and sell the other for body/paint work

my question is.. go with the high milage GT, get the leather and everything.. orr save a little extra money, sacrafice the sunroof and leather for the cheaper car, and spend the other 4k i have left on the rebuild and turbo set up...

ORRRRRRR, i found a turbo WRX, with brand new paint and tires, with 180+ for milage, and the guy said he'd do it for 5gs

    Re: wrx swap

too many options and i need advice lmao, i REALLY like the GT with the leather and sun roof... but if i buy the other one for 2200 ill have plenty of money left over to mod the shit out of it, and the L is dark blue, so when i paint it world rally blue i wont have to worry about jams or a value shade

but idk if the GT would be a better base for a turbo set up.. and IT HAS A SUNROOF lol

when it comes to subaru, im pretty good with a wrench. im just not sure on the fitment issues, im not a good fabricater, and i would have someone do the wiring for me, cuz i cant follow a wiring diagram for the life of me haha, but when i start something, i finish it. but i dont know if ill have the money to afford to finish it lmao

but if you read my above posts, i think i might just buy a 5spd leggy, and turbo the motor

    Re: wrx swap

If you're looking to go power, you get the lightest version of the chassis you want to drive. That means no leather, no sunroof. Sunroof's add 100lbs easy. Leather is heavier than cloth interiors. So if you want a good stock base to mod from, you get the lower trim model.

Here's what you do. Buy the chassis you want. Then spend some money and buy a front clip from a turbo Subaru. STi, WRX, Legacy, FXT. Choose your flavor.
Then start working on tracing the wiring for the engine harness for the engine to the corresponding wires on your existing harness (in the car you're driving). When you have that figured out then the hard part is just making sure you have the hardware needed to swap the engine in. Basically, if you have a front clip you can use the engine cross-member from the donor car, along with the entire engine and the exhaust/intake components. The only thing that will be needed after that is to swap ECUs and fab up the exhaust.

Your stock tranny will be "ok" unless you hammer it.

    Re: wrx swap

Having owned a fair amount of Subaru's both swapped and not. Take some time to think about what you really want. Do you want a track car? Do you want a fun cruiser with power? Do you want power and reliability? Lots of different answers for each of those questions. Even swapping a car correctly is still not as reliable as a car that came from the factory that way. If you want a project though, then I say go for it and enjoy learning the ins and outs of every part of your car. If I could do it all over again, I would buy an Impreza RS and swap it with a full STi drivetrain, good amount of power and enough reliability for me to be able to drive cross country if need be. Or even a Legacy GT with full STi swap. I personally don't like picking a lower model and building it up, Im doing that at the moment and its a far bigger pain in the ass than I had anticipated.

    Re: wrx swap

Im confused. Do you currently not have a car?

Buying a new legacy and turboing a NA engine is an even worse idea then trying to do a wrx swap without knowing what your doing. My 2 cents is buy a wrx or even look for an 05+ GT. Ive seen them in the 6-7k range.

If you want to swap / turbo a car that did not come that way here is a good way to do it.
    1. Buy either a swap or complete parts car
    2. Do whatever you want to the engine and have it all pretty and on a stand ready to go in the car before you touch your car.
    3. Buy a legacy wiring harness for the same year and model as yours.
    4. Send the swap harness and your legacy clone harness to iwire, ecs, etc.
    5. Have everything ready to go in the car.
    6. Then bust everything out in one weekend..... No downtime

    Re: wrx swap

I currently have two leggys. Both running. Both auto. Ones an L. Ones a 35th anniersary

    I NEED a 5 speed cuz I'm going crazy.

So I'm goin to drive one of the autos while i plan on taking the 5mt motor and sinking a lil money into it so it's turbo ready. New pistons. Crank. Rods. Bearings. Etc

New clutch. Install. Get it driving. Sell both auto leggys. Take that cash and buy my turbo n intercooler n zaust set up

No wiring nightmare. No crazy fabrication. Close to "stock" as possible with a built motor and turbo
