    Parts interchange!

Ok, so I keep seeing people ask if something will work or not when it comes to body parts, mechanical parts.

Read before posting please! Myself and a few others have been compiling a comprehensive list of interchanging parts for all Generations of Legacy's! Each post is broke up into Generations. 2nd gen is the most complete at this time.

Some will not be something a wrecker will know, but this should take care of a lot of it. This is a link I use all the time to figure what can get diffs out off, what years a hood will interchange with and so on and so on. You sometimes need to get creative with your search, but I have got a lot figured out with this LINK!

    USE IT PLEASE!!!!
    http://car-part.com/

If you use it and your still stumped, then post in this tread or a thread or ask someone that knows. Now it's not going to tell you that a 99 Outback bumper will fit on a 95 L, thats custom stuff. However it took me about 3 minutes to cross check an Outback, GT, L, and Baja to see what hoods fits what. It will as turbo, non turbo.

This is also good for locating parts and also pricing them out. I found a 5 speed for a customer in Denver for cheaper then here in Seattle and a lot of these places will ship if you need it ASAP.

This is for North American cars, includes Canada and Mexico.

    Re: Parts interchange!

    1995-1999 2nd gen BD/BK/BG

    Body:
95-99 all fenders interchange (Note:Outback has gray or gold 2-tone)
95-99 all hoods interchange (Note: Outback and GT from 97 have scoops, will also interchange)
95-99 all bumpers interchange (Note: OB/GT/L/LSI have different covers, but will both to the car.)
95-99 all headlight interchange (note:Wiring for 95-97 and 98-99 is different, but they will bolt up)
95-99 all front doors interchange (Note: LHD and RHD may be different, but can not verify. Manual and power maybe different, but can not verify)
95-96 rear doors (wagon only: Maybe for DOT safety standard changes) 97-99 Rear (wagon only)
95-96 rear doors (sedan only: Maybe for DOT) 97-99 (Sedan only)
95-99 trunk/deck lid All sedans (difference only for wing or not)
95-99 Hatch/tailgate all Wagons (difference only for wing or not)
    95-99 tail lights Sedan ALL
    95-99 tail lights Wagon ALL
95-99 rear bumper sedan (Non SUS 96-99)
95-99 rear bumper Wagon (all non GT 97-99, OB 96-99)
97-99 rear bumper SUS Sedan ONLY (will fit other sedans Note: 97 SUS was low numbers and does not come up in interchange)
96-99 rear bumper Outback (will fit all other wagons)
95-99 Rocker covers (painted, non painted should interchange with all cars Note: car not equipped with them will need retro fitting)
95 Only side mirrors (folding, will work on other years)
96-99 side mirrors ALL(None folding Note: Does not account for painted or heated)
    95-99 front side glass ALL
95-99 Rear side glass Sedan only
95-99 Rear side glass Wagon only

    Interior:
95-99 front seats All interchange (this does not account for color differences or leather or cloth)
    95-99 rear seats (Wagon only)
    95-99 Rear seats (sedan only)
    95-97 dash (Just color differences)
98-99 dash (color) not positive why early and late are different, will update when I know more.
Cluster: All years should, except 95 maybe different. Up to 97 they have a slightly different look then 98-99, but do interchange as far as I know.

    Suspension:
Front control arm (look up interchange on link)
Rear control arms all (look up interchange in link)
Rack and Pinion All (exempt OB)
    Rack and Pinion OB only
hubs all (look up interchange in link)
Axle all (look up interchange in link)
Many of these parts interchange with Impreza and Forester. Look them up!

    Engine:
    95 only 2.2
96 only 2.2, 2.5, AT, MT (no interchange)
    97-98 2.2
    97 2.5
    98 2.5
    99 only
Ok, this is where you use common sense. The actual interchange says no, but we know they do. 99's are different with having an 8 bolt bell housing and will work. 95 2.2's are OBD 1. 96 2.5 are different and the heads will not interchange. However, 2.5's in 97 and 98 are the same and do have a bigger interchange. You can use a 96 motor in 98 car, it just needs to be complete, also works the other way around. Most 2.2's after 96 are interchangeable also. Your local wrecker can help you figure out what is different. Sometimes it's just a sensor, or Manual or Automatic and can be retro fitted to work.

NOTE: It has been a long debate that all 95 and 96 Legacy's are OBD II, but other members have seen cars that are OBD I. Some cars got OBD II plugs but were OBD I. Other makes did this also. So this info can vary from car to car for 95-96.

    Transmission/differential:
GT's Autos are one year only for most years
GT Manual has more of an interchange. Also includes Forester and Impreza
    Outback is OB only.
Look up the interchange and/or call a wrecker. If you get a matching trans and diff, 99% of the time it will work. If it's an auto, the TCU maybe needed. There are lots of hybrid interchanges out there also.
Axles: Again, look this up as the interchange is wide

    Other mechanical:
    Radiators: 95-97, 98-99
    Radiator fans: 95-97, 98-99
Timing belt tensioner 2.5 96-97, 98-98 NOTE: This can vary from car to car, but this is most typical.
AC Condenser: 96-97, 98-98 NOTE: some cars may have been converted with collision damage.
Timing Gears: 2.2 ALL, 2.5 ALL

Thats not really what the tread was intended for. It's for interchanges, not conversion or swaps. If it could be cross stickyed, that would be preferred, be cause 99% of people dont even look in here. They post in General most of the time.

However, I will not argue with what ever is done. It was made to cut down on multiple threads being made that domt need to. As long as people remember its here and uses it, thats all that matters.

Ok, well, I feel like the Swaps/Conversions Forum (Will it fit/work?) has kind of turned into a forum where people ask what's interchangeable, etc. I'll ask the admins how they feel, and we'll see where it ends up. I like the thread, don't get me wrong. It's still stickied for a reason.

    Re: Parts interchange!

You don't need to swap seat rails to get Impreza seats in a BD. They just bolt in.

This list needs some of basic Impreza stuff that just bolts on. Suspension, RSBs, Strutbars, Seats.
A note of OEM Radio compatibility would be nice too. Impreza up to 07, Legacy up to 04, Forester up to 08

Noticed one thing with the info on the BD. I have a 95 L 2.2 with AWD. This lists my car as OBD1 when infact it is OBD2.

    Ahh.... good! more info!

As for the OBDI and OBDII, what is the build date of your car? I have seen 95's as OBDI on all the ones I have worked on.

This stuff works just fine... It's even better if you have a DIY or another link I can stick in there some where. This thread is supposed to be a collective of all things that will work with a Legacy. Mostly OEM stock parts, but anything is good.

Most people dont know you can use a 1992 front control arm on a 2003, thing like that. But even knowing if something will fit or not from another car is good also!

That might be why. However, I find it odd because my parts car was a early 96 and it was OBDI... haha... crazyness I say!

Late to the party, but my build date is September of 94 and it's OBDII. I wonder if region mattered.

    Re: Parts interchange!

I still have yet to figure this all out. I know for sure 97-up USDM cars are all OBDII. My 96 BK, I was told, was OBDI, however, I got it with vary few parts on it and cant be 100%. I do know that just about all 95's I have seen have been OBDI though.

Maybe we should take a poll at sometime to figure this out for sure. Maybe it has something to do with build dates, or country of origin?

Parts interchange with motors are a mixed bag. I did a slight OEM interchange list, but by far not complete. In truth, I have a feeling that all motors to an extent will interchange with all other Subarus, but this is where others need to be giving with the inf they already know.

I sold a 4AET with a diff last night because a guy wanted to use it in an SVX. Apparently its an upgrade. Any all interchange/swap info is welcome here.

95% of this list though, is for OEM parts interchange. However, I am also listing and using swap info and other info others are contributing. So feel free to contribute if you know something I dont!

I was under the impression that all MY96 cars sold in the US HAD to be OBDII.

You got any pics of these mythical creatures, 2nd gen's with obd-I? No one believed me when I said I had seen 2 95 obd-I's, lol.

I remember the sticker on the underside of the hood said OBD-I, and while it had the place for the obd-II plug to go, it was a dummy receptical.

    Re: Parts interchange!

Even though I've owned my 97 Legacy wagon, with a single, overhead cam, 2.2 engine, and automatic transmission for about 5 years, I don't know what the abbreviations are for my engine and transmission, or, how to find out.

Since I bought the car, I've replaced the radiator, water pump, idler pulleys, front half-shafts, all brakes/rotors, and the front struts. As of now, it's only got about 120K on it.

The car runs excellent, but, it has been living in Wisconsin and Minnesota all it's life and it is getting really rusty. I'm considering trying to find another car, with a good body, that I can swap parts with. If I'm reading correctly, my only body option where I can use anything from my original car is to find another 97 Legacy wagon? I REALLY prefer the looks of the Outbacks, and if I could make my parts work on something newer, that would be awesome!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Re: Parts interchange!

You can do just about any, but you might have to do a lot of parts swapping to make it work...

Your best bet is to stick with 97 since things changed from 96-97 and then again from 97-98...

Aftermarket... Like springs, swap bars, body kits, wings, seats...

Crazy interchanges no one knows... Like a Tribeca bar on a BD...

Will it work... Such as "what do I do to make STi struts work?" or "can I install Impreza seats in my car?" goes here... I know a ton of those threads are out there. Post them here, or PM me and I'll update it. It would be nice to have a one thread go to for this vast amount of knowledge we have on this forum!

I have already got some help from other members, feel free to pitch in, or correct me if I'm wrong, I'm gonna need a lot of help figuring this stuff out. I know some, but very little!

    Springs!
On the good list: Whiteline, H&R
    Bad list: Tein S-tech

    Hybrid spring swaps:
    STI-Link?
    WRX-Link?

    Swaybars:
    Rally Tech

    OEM Stereo interchanges:
    Impreza up to 2007
    Forester up to 2008
Legacy up to 2004 (2005 and up incoprerated into dash/HAVC)

    Hybrid:
02-03 GT bar on 2nd gen Cheap (part #20401AE03A) http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=21211
    Tribeca bar link?

I know this is probably too late to be of any help to anyone but STI springs should fit BE/BH Legacys. Whiteline do swaybars and I highly recommend them 9had 24mm heavy duty one in my 2.5 BD Legacy)
Yes officer, I did hit a pedestrian, but instead of dwelling on that why not focus on how many I've missed?
