StatGSRs EG33 Wagacy Build Thread (1/20/10 engine is in!!!)

Well this is going to be the build thread for my EG33 (svx) swap. For those that don't know i have a 97 Legacy Brighton that will be receiving the EG33.

About the swap... Decided to go a different route than most and stay NA, but i wasn't about to waste my time playing with a 2.2 or even a 2.5 since i knew the 3.3 swap could be done. Mechanically the engine bolts right up, but will require moving the radiator. Options for the radiator include getting a custom one or hacking up the rad support to move it forward. im actually going to try a V mount style rad to see if i can fit it in with out destroying to much of the rad support and if that wont work then i will probably go with a custom aluminum rad.

EG33 is rated at 230 hp 230 lbs tq, thats beyond stock wrx territory if you were wondering.

    Costs...
My hope is to keep the total cost under 1500-2000. i got my SVX with 180k and a dead trans for 600 bux. i expect to recoup almost the entire cost of the car after parting it out. the engine is in need of work and needs a new timing and idler set as well as a complete set of timing belt covers. i will also be doing head gaskets and some other seals while i have the chance.

Wiring will be done by my friend Chux at http://www.numbchuxconversions.com . he has done the wiring merge for this several times and i have complete faith in him giving me quality work.

Other items i purchased for the swap include Group N engine mounts and trans mount.

If you got any questions feel free to ask, sadly i think this will be a rather long process given the time i have to work on it, but it will be so worth it once its done. I will be doing updates anytime there is anything worth updating.

As it stands right now, i have the Engine out of the SVX. still need to pull the wiring and trans (to sell) from the SVX before it leaves the garage.

first things first. SVX + Cut exhaust = sex

And heres the pics of what i have so far...

Grayguys GFs new winter beater impreza. Has a bad trans so that's getting swapped out

Good man! NA all the way. Thread subscribed. I want to see this happen

You wouldn't be able to run a top mount radiator? Since suby's usually had top mount intercoolers wouldn't have enough air flow for a radiator to function as well?

Just an idea, but I have no idea how it would go bout getting it done tho

I don't know if you've specified or if it's been asked.

Wouldn't it be easier to use a '96-'97 SVX to swap because it'd be OBDII as opposed to the '92 OBDI ?

^"Yeah, but then it'd be a shitty OBDII motor. Also, you still have to completely swap all the wiring around."

That was StatGSR's response while he stands in the kitchen

Re: StatGSRs EG33 Wagacy Build Thread

as grayguy said for me earlier, no real benefit to using an obd2 motor, wouldn't make any part of swap easier as far as i can gather (harnesses needs to be completely merged (legacy chassis/svx engine)) and would also eliminate the possibility for me to use the engine tuning that ecutune offers for the SVX.

Using a newer motor would also probably make it harder to find a dirt cheap donor vehicle as well.

progress for today included getting the tranny completly out of the car, also go the rear diff and drive shaft out last time i was working on it.

Got some of the dash taken apart which has been a complete headache, the assembly of the dash on this thing makes no sense at all, you can take a million bolts and screws out and yet nothing ever falls off!!!!

next step will be finishing the wiring removal and getting the SVX outa the garage then ripping into the wagacy, should be a little more exciting once i see things coming together atleast...

What do you mean by the "shitty OBDII motor" comment? I thought OBDII was better.

What exactly is so shitty about them?

Re: StatGSRs EG33 Wagacy Build Thread

well might as well give a little update tho this project has had little attention given to it over the last few months.

SVX is out of the garage and has been almost completely torn apart, shouldnt be much more work to get the rest of the wiring harness out of the car.

Legacy is in the garage. the 2.2 is out and the front end is off the car.

nothing much new with the eg33, i still have to order all the parts for the rebuild. should be doin that shortly. hopfully i can spend a little more time on this and actually have a good update for you guys in a little bit.

Re: StatGSRs EG33 Wagacy Build Thread

Quick question reguarding the EG33's computer. Correct me if I am wrong, but are there any issues with running a engine which was supposed to be used with an automatic trans and swapping it to a manual? I recall something about autos ecu changin the timing on falling RPM. I might be wrong, but thought I who'd ask. I would love to see more with this swap!

Re: StatGSRs EG33 Wagacy Build Thread

I think that is true about the ecu in most cases, but I'm not sure in this one. When I did an auto-manual swap in a 96' OBS, I didn't have to do anything with the ECU.

On a side note, I really want to see this thing come together. We just bought another SVX to possibly do the same swap in the white 2.5RS posted in the pics above.

Re: StatGSRs EG33 Wagacy Build Thread (update 11/29/09)

well we pulled the bumper beam tonight to see what we can do with the radiator.

i wont be doing any v mount like i thought, there isnt the space, but i will be able to mount the svx rad vertically just under the hood latch lever (in front of the rad support). looks like this should work excellent and be fairly simple to mount.

hopfully my next update should start getting interesting.......

Re: StatGSRs EG33 Wagacy Build Thread (update 11/29/09)

Well, Stat's fab work is primarily farmed out to me, and he's out of town for work so here's what I got done tonight.

We figured out that we could use the stock bosses in the Radiator where the condensor is supposed to bolt on to it. This ment adding some tabs to the core support to utilize those bosses.

To get the radiator to fit vertically in front of the support, I had to cut out the pinch weld and front section of the lower support

I had to cut the 3 lower grill mounts, and the inner most headlights off to get them to fit on. The bumper beam is going to need to be trimmed at the pinch weld to get the Rad sitting vertically as well.

The upper radiator hose is almost perfect! I mounted the rad just low enough to easily get the upper hose on.

On the inner side of the core support, we'll have to wrap the hose and trim a little metal so that the hoses doesn't rub.

That's all I got done tonight. I'm hoping tomorrow evening I can build the lower mounts and start trimming the bumper beam and the black plastic bumper beam as well.

AS a referance, the bottom mount is going to look a lot like the lower FMIC mount I put in my BD

Good work guys! I considered an H6 swap into another Impreza but I think I'll stick with the cars I have and finally go with a standalone EMS on my turbo'ed wagon. Sometime if a suitable car falls into my lap I will do the H6 swap.
Are you doing the wiring yourself or sending the hanrnesses out to be merged?
