Comments and Concerns for 5 speed swap

I am starting the process of completely a 5 speed swap in my legacy. I have read the resources that are posted up referring to the swap, but I would like reactions from people who have done it to their cars. What would you have done different? Was there anything you would tell the next person what to do differently? Hope this can be a resource some day in the future. Thanks!

If you're going to do the hardened shifter bushings, and/or the updated shifter linkage (for more availability of short shifters), it's a good time to do it now before the tranny is in.

Re: Comments and Concerns for 5 speed swap

So you still need a pedal set, hard line, soft line, master, slave (if doing hydro), front half drive line (I think they are different)...

At least thats the parts I can think of from when I swapped my 240...

you can use the front axles. I am thinking about using hydraulics, so I will need a slave cylinder.

I don't know if the legacy's are the same but we did this on my bro's 99 impreza and he had to give up abs and cruise control (I don't know if that matters to you).

Don't you also need the 5 spd trans xmember?

There are a couple of posts about the difference between he ECUs for 5 speeds and autos but I can't remember where they are... PM Chuck, he would know. Also, why an OBDI? Your car should be OBDII lol

I've heard about that, and thats the reasoning for a manual ECU.

The manual ecu didn't solve his problem. Its because the TCU is needed for the ABS (i think)

Re: Comments and Concerns for 5 speed swap

im pretty sure if you swap ECUs without swapping wiring you lose ABS. the only TRUE way to do a auto->manual swap is to swap all the wiring and the ABS pump.

the psuedo "do-it-right" way is to tap the wiring/plugs that normally go to the transmission and wire in the clutch/neutral and reverse switches into the corresponding 4eat wiring, so at least you can keep reverse lights and cruise control

I was having issues with the ABS, so I took out the ABS fuse. I'm not concerned about losing ABS, but I would like to keep the cruise control. I think I'm going to read over the legacy central thread for swapping transmissions this afternoon.

Re: Comments and Concerns for 5 speed swap

here's a bunch of different info that i've dug up to help. its like i was saying, your ecu should work, its just a matter of the tcu/ abs. If you keep the TCU your ABS will work. To keep the cruise control, you need to wire in the neutral saftey switch so it thinks its in gear not in neutral since cruise control doesn't work in neutral... at least that's what i've gathered from the reading. Hopefully thats not too confusing.

Re: Comments and Concerns for 5 speed swap

Posting here cause you guys seem the most knowledgeable yet about the swap. I have a 98lgt auto and have a complete donor car which is a 97lgt 5mt.

How much of the wiring do I swap and do I need to swap the abs block to get the abs to work correctly?
    Thanks

Chad, make sure you check the fsm for 99, where your parts car is a phase 2 the wiring could be different from the essentially phase 1 in the outback.
