Harry Maneuver's 99 Franken BD - Dyno sheet attached!!! 12/2

Seeing as how this could possibly be the most overdue Members Ride thread EVER... I thought I would take you back to the beginning.

    July 2007:

    pistons
Just after my 21st B-Day, an Escalade EXT ran a red light and clipped the front bumper of the Benz as I was taking a left through the intersection that he was speeding through.

The Benz was totalled but everbody was ok. While I am waiting for the insurance payout to come in so I can buy a new car, I am now taking the VFR to work everyday.

    July 27th, 2007

I am distracted (semi long story if anybody is interested) while approaching the first intersection after leaving my house on the way to work. I run the red light and t-bone a 2007 Ford Explorer just behind the B pillar.

    Bike before:

    Bike after:

Here I am about 50 minutes after admitance to the ER... taken by a co-worker who read about the crash on CHP's website and come to the hospital.

Basically I broke my left arm/wrist in several places, I broke my cheekbone (yes even with a full face helmet), seperated my pelvis by a cm or two and had a good amount of rash.

    My new wrist:

So now I have no transportation which is ok because I will be off my feet for about 4 months anyways

While I was re-learning to walk and use my left hand, I began the search for my next car.

I love snowboarding so anybody who has tried to put chains on a loaded rear wheel drive mercedes in the snow knows that it is not fun at all.

    So I wanted AWD.

Problem is I have a horrible driving record with speeding tickets for the last few years... So out goes anything turbo.

I settled on the legacy due to mainly photos of members rides off this site which came up when I searched for pictures of the body style.

It took me about 3 months to find a legacy that had the coveted 2.2L motor (every mechanic or subaru tech I spoke to recommeded it over the 2.5 GT), WITH leather and a moonroof... it just so happened to be down in San Diego.

So the day it popped up on Auto Trader for $4500, I called and requested tons of pics which were sent to me (about 40 of them) in about one hour.

    It was MINE!!!!!!

Called and inquired about service records which the guy didnt have any of... he could only tell that it was a Subaru Lease for the first part of its life in Colorado... then came to So Cal after the first owner.

The lease ended before the 120k Service (Timing belt ect) so I asked the car lot if they had a repair shop... which they did. I put a $400 non refundable deposit on the car which covered the cost of the parts for the timing belt job. The mechanic called me once he could look at the components and estimated that they had less than 15k miles on them based on the wear he sees. I told him to replace the stuff anyways while he was in there and save the old parts.

I bought a ticket from Sacramento to San Diego one way for about $80 and flew down to take a look at it. The dealer met me at the airport in the car and let me drive it back to his lot... it felt solid and drove great.

After the full walk around and another drive test... I shook his hand and we sat down to write up the offer.

I had already paid $400 in a deposit which also covered the cost of the t-belt parts. There were a few issues with the interior that the seller conveniently missed in his numerous photos so I talked the guy down to $3700 plus the $400 in parts for the T-Belt.

Paid the man and drove it home!!!

More to come... this is all I could get out before work.

Re: Harry Maneuver's 1999 L Sedan - Most overdue MR ever?

This started off as a Members Ride thread and slowly evolved into a 19 page (as of now) build thread so I figured I would make an index related specifically to the High Compression Frankenmotor build and 5MT swap.

    9 - 4EAT removal
    10 - More 4EAT removal
    11 - Bought 5MT from 2010 Impreza with rear differential for $600

Yea those multispokes are the OEM wheels off a 2011/2012 WRX... they dont fit the rear without horrible rubbing... I just took that photo for reference...

Those wheels are the ones that are now on the 04 wagon with 245/45/17 tires on them.

Re: Harry Maneuver's 1999 L Sedan - Most overdue MR ever?

Car just spun a bearing halfway between sacramento and portland.

Going to see if I can find a rental car tomorrow to take me and the fiance up to Portland for my B-Day and the 4th... then either meet pops in Yreka on the way home to tow the Legacy or swap the rental car for a Uhaul with towing dolly.

Honestly not mad... Knew this was coming for the last 40k miles and I knew I risked this every single time I would take the legacy to portland.

And I JUST last weekend installed the WRX wheels with brand new tires ($330) as well as the WRX brakes with new pads and rotors ($115)...

Ehh I am still undecided if I am just going to get a new car for DD and take the leggy back down to sac to repair when I find the time/money or just focus on getting the leggy fixed.

Looks like I should have started to build a spare motor after all!!

I saw your other thread about getting a new car. I thought it was wrecked, but now I would say drop a motor in it and keep driving her!

Re: Harry Maneuver's 99 Sedan, Yay! Big end failure video! 0

Ok well it has been about a month and although the apartment complex hasnt said anything, which I cant believe, I am starting to wonder if keeping it and throwing a new motor in it is really what I am after.

Here is a list of all parts currently on the car and what I think they are worth realistically, please correct me if I am wrong.

    - JDM Projector headlights with spare lens, with Osram Nightbreakers in low and high beams. Comes with jumper connector so it is plug and play. - $175

    - JDM Front bumper, bumper beam, projector foglights (with switch). Also have Osram Nightbreakers in them. - $350

    - JDM Grill with green emblem - $70

    - JDM orange side markers - $30

    - 02 WRX Momo steering wheel 8/10 condition already has cruise swapped - $150

    - VERY RARE OEM dual 12v power port that replaces the ashtray. Complete with original box and everything it was installed with - $75

    - Full woodgrain kit including HVAC surround - $125

    - JDM Power Folding/ Heated Mirrors with all pigtails and heated/folding mirror switch with pigtails - $150

    - OEM Truck net with all hardward never installed - $30

    - Yakima Rack with towers, bars, keys, q-clips - $125

    - OEM Factory alarm upgrade (for Alpine Alarm not Code Alarm). Complete with box, instructions, LED blinker, starter immobilizer ect - $50

Any of those prices seem high or low to anybody?

Anything else that someone would be interested in if I were going to part?

Re: Harry Maneuver's 99 Sedan - PART OUT FEELER W/ LOTS OF J

No it wouldnt be shipped... none of those prices are shipped. But I am from Sherwood and am up there about every other month so that wouldnt be too big of a deal.

Mirror install - I got as far as ultimately realizing that I need to find a set of USDM folding mirrors from a 95/96. So the motors are currently taken out of the JDM mirror housings...

I originally took them out so that I could paint the JDM housings black. But then came to the conclusion that the internals would need to be swapped over to the USDM folding bases/housings.

    Everything is there though.

Man I am so torn as to what to do right now.

I mean there are going to be times where me and the Fiance want to go places where we wouldnt want to take the WRX or the FXT...

If I parted the leggy and scrapped or sold the rest, it would cost me probably $2000+ to buy another beater subaru which I wouldnt even know how long would last.

Not only that, but when I buy a 3rd beater subaru, I am almost certainly not going to be able to find one with leather, sunroof, tweeters, and other factory options that this legacy has. Not to mention the exterior JDM parts which makes the legacy stand out from all the other cars (at least in my eyes).

If I bought another beater, I would also miss out on an opportunity to swap an engine for the first time which I have wanted to do for a while.

Re: Harry Maneuver's 99 Sedan - PART OUT FEELER W/ LOTS OF J

I voted for you too keep it. If need be you could sell some jdm stuff to make a little money to help offset the new motor/tranny cost.. But like you said, it would be hard to find another subaru with everything you want. And besides, depending on how you mod the wrx/forester, you'll have some parts from them that will only make the legacy more fun to have. To me, it wouldn't make sense to start from scratch, but i guess its just all how you view it.

Re: Harry Maneuver's 99 Sedan - PART OUT FEELER W/ LOTS OF J

Ok so after totalling up the parts that I would be able to sell quickly... I have decided I am just going to replace the motor.

Now I am back to building a motor:

    viewtopic.php?f=11&t=23349

I am still wanting to do an N/A build as I now have two turbo subaru's. What I am torn on now is do I do a high compression build or just the quick and easy full motor/tranny replacement.

For someone who has never replaced a motor, would anybody advise against me trying something like a high compression build for my first engine swap?

Without the addition of cams or other internal modifications, is the increase in power from the high compression build, compared to just an SOHC 2.5 motor worth the extra expense of having to swap the heads over?

I am assuming I would need to have the heads checked out before I swapped them over to the 2.5.

Re: Harry Maneuver's 99 Sedan - Gameplan for rebuild 08/07/1

I have established that. Now I am just trying to find out if I want to go through the trouble on a high compression build or if the extra HP would even be worth the extra $$$ over just dropping in a sohc ej25

I apologize if I already asked this but do I absolutely have to go with 95 EJ22 heads or could I use my phase 2 ej22 heads?

It just seems that if I use the 95 EJ22 heads, I will need the exhaust as well or I will have to modify the Phase 2 2.2 exhaust that I currently have.

Ok so I just came across a 2004 H6 motor for $1000... low miles.

What are my options for a transmission that will bolt up to it? Am I limited to just an H6 tranny?

Also, I assume there would need to be a wire harness merge correct?

Re: Harry Maneuver's 99 Sedan - Gameplan for rebuild 08/07/1

Any Subaru 5MT or 4EAT trans will bolt to the H6 engine - but the issue will be that the H6 ECU is expecting an auto trans. The way around this is either a Link Plus standalone ECU, or you wire in the 4EAT TCU so that the H6 thinks it's got one, but the 5MT would be controlling it.

Unless you have a 4EAT already, in which case you really just have to figure out how to cram the engine in there with the radiator - slim fans would probably do it.

You'll want to merge the harness, but you're essentially replacing your 99 ECU with the 04 ECU, so the majority of the pinouts will be the same. It'll be your accessories that might need some finagling - the 04 Outback w/ H6 typically came in the LL Bean model which had auto-HVAC.

From the votes I'm seeing, everyone wants you to fix it... lol

Thats a god price on a H6, now it's the work to put it in. Huffer is right though. It's gonna be some work, but if you have a driver now, then take you time and have some fun!

Re: Harry Maneuver's 99 Sedan - Gameplan for rebuild 08/07/1

Yea the wire merge and accessories is what make me nervous. I think I am going to stick to the high compression build... less changes for things to go wrong I guess.

So back to my old question... do I HAVE to use 95 EJ22 heads with a 99+ SOHC 2.5 or can I use my current 99 2.2 heads on the 99+ SOHC engine,

Is it just that the 95's "flow better" or is it because it is necessary for the build?

No you don't have to use 95 heads.
Your heads will work fine with 99+ 2.5 from what I've read.
95 2.2 heads are most desired because of header options
I believe your heads might flow better?

^ I thought this as well.

    Boring... maybe.

How can I make it more exciting without dropping $4k+ in wire harness merges, custom fabbed parts or going turbo?!?!

At that point I would just drop the $4k into the stage 2 WRX...

After seeing Reason's car and results, I don't think a high compression build would be boring. I think it'd maybe even match the output of the H6....
