    96 Short Throw shifter

I was doing a few google searches and I cannot for the life of me find a short throw shifter. I check kartboy and rallysportdirect.com.

What's the deal? Maybe my keywords are garbage.

I have this one that I scored off a junkyard car for pretty cheap. No need to spend that kind of money though. Also Kartboy's owner works at All Wheel Engineering, but I didn't see a web site for some reason.

I'd check with 4Zero1Motorsports aka Reason on the boards. He can usually get upgrade parts for good deals.

Ill check with him. Whats the difference that there is such a small aftermarket for the oldwr shifters? Linkage?

    Re: 96 Short Throw shifter

Yes, the linkage is different depending on the build date. 96 was the crossover year, from what I gather. Either you have this:

97+ linkage, compatible with many short shifters

    Or this:

90-96ish linkage, only aftermarket shifter is the B&M or knockoff

As you can see, the linkage system is completely reversed from each other.

Link to said knockoff B&M shifter for older models:

My B&M knockoff is working quit well, after 10k miles. Just make sure to wrap the center bearing in electrical tape when you install so that it doesn't rattle.

They claim lots of stuff like that. I think it's because they don't have people with older cars they can test it on. I've been meaning to email them and tell them to add the cobb & kartboy shifter stay bushings to 95+ Legacy as they're listed only for Impreza & newer Legacys.

I don't believe there's any difference in crossmembers. I know for sure the transmission mount is exactly the same.

Okay for 35 I will take a stab at it and order them.

I was also going to order the kartboy front and rear shifter bushings.

Spring for the whole kit, it'll save you money down the road. And +1000 for the shift kit. I have it in mine and absolutely love it now that it's broken it. Prepare for a bit of a pain when you install, but as long as you do it right the first time, you should never need to dive back down in there. There's also the TiC tranny stabilizing kit, which is a nice addition, and you have the option of making your own tranny mount out of window weld. That last suggestion makes an enormous improvement in tranny slop, but it does take a couple of days to cure fully (less if baked, or set out in the hot sun).

    Re: 96 Short Throw shifter

Non-existent. You need to do a little DIY in order to drill out your 1-piece linkage, and buy 2-piece linkage bushings in order to do what you're wanting to do.

Also, I did a double check for you. The kit I was talking about is called the "holy shift" kit, and it's a bit overkill for you. You'll want circular shifter bushings, back bushing, and linkage bushings. Otherwise, I can't think of anything else. Crossmember bushings are a nice touch, especially the added benefit of only having to drop the transmission once to do all of this.

    EDIT:

Here's the DIY on RS25.com; the site is currently down for maintenance, but the link is good.

    Re: 96 Short Throw shifter

Good thing I won't have to drop the trans. Since it's still out of the car until the swap in 2-3 weeks.

I got the cobb front and rear stay bushings. Where to get the linkage bushings? I am assuming that is if I did the DIY? On TiC's webiste it shows it for 04+ for linkage bushings.

I see that it's just as simple as installing a brand new linkage. Which I will do.

    Well, hang on.

The linkage (04-05+) update is nice, but not necessary. You can modify your old linkage with that link for pennies, compared to $50+ for the updated linkage. The 04+ bushings are what you want, check out Turn In Concepts.

    Re: 96 Short Throw shifter

From what I saw on that link (when it worked 5 minutes ago) was that he just replaced the shifter linkage with a new one.

Excuse my stupidity. I do not know much about that area by any means.

Also if I upgraded my linkage I would not be able to use the short throw I purchased, right?

Hmm. It isn't coming up for me.

Regardless; to my memory what he does is to drill out the 1-piece shift linkage, replace it with a bolt and then throw the new bushings into his old linkage. It's difficult to explain without pictures, but if you'll read through it a few times it'll begin to make more sense.

    Re: 96 Short Throw shifter

I used this link to rebuild the linkage: http://www.ludicrous-speed.com/wiki/ind ... hifter_Fix

http://www.mcmaster.com has the bushings and I used the MDS filled Nylon ones as they don't wear out as quickly as the ones this guy used. It definitely shored up the slop. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to put the updated, slop free linkage in my car yet.

    Re: 96 Short Throw shifter

To rebuild the linkage it looks like i'd have to buy a tap for it. Not bad. I will see what my discount is on a new linkage.

I will see if a buddy of mine actually has the tools to do this. And then Garrison you claim the 04 TiC linkage bushings will work? Or are those the pivot bushings?

    So this

    http://turninconcepts.com/product_info. ... ducts_id=2

Covers all 4 bushings on the linkage?

Mark from Wisconsin to the rescue.

Mark has the right link, I edited my post above in order to show such.
If you read Shane's thread, thaaaat's the one you want to follow.

To answer your question, I have not done this. I wasted my money and bought a new linkage w/ bushings with it from TiC.

TiCs website says the linkage update wont work on setups with an external spring. Who knew.

I will probably just buy a new linkage from the dealer which hopefully has the bushings on it. Which I am assuming it will. At least the 2 that are not "serviceable" and just be done with it.

    Re: 96 Short Throw shifter

I actually didn't use the existing rivet and replaced everything with grade 8 3/8" (2.5" length, IIRC & yes, an SAE size fit better than metric) bolts on both of them. The rotate nicely and fit quite well. Just make sure that more than 50% of the shaft of the bolt is smooth, it varies by where you get them. It was a lot easier without the use of a drill press like "Shane" used.

FWIW, the 90-96 linkage uses bolts and not rivets.

Looking at their website, yes, it looks like there isn't any hole for the spring to go into. You don't really need the spring (I'm without one because of a boneheaded shop that installed the linkage upside down).
