Not for the shifter - the joint. Or did you just get a used joint for the older style? The newer ones won't just work with the older style shifter.
I guess I need pictures to be sure of everything working properly for you.

I bought a shifter joint for a 95 from the dealer.
While I am at work tomorrow. I will take a picture of what I have. I am probably missing something. Or from what I can tell it seems like I am.

Ah, ok, so you've got all matching parts then. Just wanted to make sure you didn't make the same mistake I did.

So i ordered a short throw. The one for a 95 legacy. Does not work. The linkage i hace does not look like a 97+ and doesnt look like a pre 96 either. Confused. Anyone know what they are talking about?

Okay, two questions.
The linkage assembly you have in the picture. That's from a newer Subaru (like 04+ or something) right?
The shifter doesn't work on your stock linkage. Can you explain why/how? Is it not wide enough? It looks like the right style to me.

It's from a 95.
Does the bracket on the new shifter go around the bracket on the 95 linkage? Maybe that is where I got lost.
1996 Subaru Legacy L
doubtful, the bracket on the new shifter would have a bearing or something attached to it.
I think I'm with mark on this one. The newer linkage (the piece above the long rod with the big "O" at the end) looks to be from a newer subaru.
I've been to boost and back again my friends... and it was good
Just pulled one from a 93. Same style as the one from the 95. Also got one from a 90 which looks like it matches the new short throw i got.

I'm all kinds of confused now. Those look nothing like the linkage from my 95.
The 93 and 95 you got the linkage from - They weren't from an SS were they?

Nope 93 was an L model and the 95 is an L model wagon
However I found a linkage from a 1990 that looks like the one in the second picture that you posted at the beginning of this thread.

Are you saying your short shifter wont fit inside the bottom linkage, or it won't bolt inside your top linkage piece?

The picture I posted at the beginning of the thread was from my car, too. This is really strange.

I compared them to my friends 91 SS and it has the same linkage as the stock 95 stuff I got. It's almost like people changed it out once upon a time or Subaru just threw whatever in there.

Well, I know mine is stock. That's all I can really say though.

Thread revival! So I've been looking at short shifters and reading a lot on the forum and I've since learned (after writing one or two posts already) that the shifter in my car is the old style and thus lacks any kind of appreciable aftermarket support. So it looks like I'll need to swap linkages. It looks like I can grab any 5MT linkage from 1997 and on and that should be fine, right?
The first is my current shifter.
This is what I'm thinking I'm gonna need.
Correct?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
Two months too late probably but that last picture matches my '97 Legacy L shifter. Did you do the swap and if so, what bushings did you use?
