Thats really nice I love those projector lights. What did you use to clean the engine bay? I'm in process of removing my motor too and my engine bay is bad from 1 year of separator plate and a cam seal failure. That's a nicely done replacement, you will get years of service especially getting those h/g's replaced. Looks great.

pleaidstar - Thanks. I degrease with simple green degreaser, rinse with power washer, and every once in a while Ill shine things up by wiping on a little tire shine. Lights where purchased from some dude in Japan on Ebay. They took forever to come in!

EJ22D - Thanks man. I don't feel very proud of it. I know it's come a long way since purchase but I've put like 50 miles on it a year after purchase! This thing needs to start driving!

Took it around the block yesterday. The rack leaking all over the exhaust smells SO damn bad...

    Re: AssYriaNrocKer's 98 GT build

Finally got to working on this thing. Rented an engine hoist for a day and got the motor out last night. by now we can get this motor in and out in no time. I stopped at a local tire shop where a friend let me take a couple used tires to set the motor on for now. It's a good idea to avoid crushing the oil pan.
    PICS
Hauled everything over in the dd 22re.

Tools and beer...I think I got everything...

You can tell we just cleaned up the garage and made room for this project.

    and out...

A couple pics of fatgc8's ride just cause...

Today will be motor tear down day. I will need to return that engine hoist and purchase an engine stand....it will make things much easier. We took a good look at the "04 STI" rack I bought and not so sure if it is an o4 sti. We will look into it further and contact the company that sold it to us.

BTW seeing as this is this the second time we are doing all of this I think the new official name to this project is "deja vu". LOL

    Re: AssYriaNrocKer's 98 GT build

    Day 1 -Engine tear down-

Got most of the way thru and then came to a complete stop aT the camshafts.....Need the cam sprocket tool...bummer

Other then that everything went smoothly. Every nut and bolt was labeled and placed in zip locks. Bad bolts where re-threaded and nuts and threads got chased. Rust on the bolts was removed via wire wheel. Timing cover, valve covers, intake plenum, and anything else I can clean will be cleaned. Obviously the heads are going to a machine shop asap.

    parts coming soon

    Rallitek 4eat Tran. Mount Insert
Subaru group N motor mounts and pitch stop mount
    Whiteline steering rack bushings
    GrimmSpeed light weight crank pulley
    Grimm speed Thermostat
    more?????

Hopefully get that cam sprocket tool soon so we can move on!

    PICS

Returned the engine hoist and bought a engine stand with the deposit money.

    Intake off

    Lets have a look......YUMMMMYYYY

This is pretty much where we're at...

Been raining since we started this project....

    Re: AssYriaNrocKer's 98 GT build

Thanks redlegacygt. I love the work space as well. Wish I could say it was mine lol but it's fatgc8's garage actually.

So after realizing the rack I had was not a STI rack I called the company and returned the wrx rack. Seeing as the 04 rack is hard to find and hella expensive we decided to go with the 07 sti rack instead. I will need a 05 n up cross member which I have....and 05 n up control arms! I ordered the 07 rack couple days ago and I believe this huge box sitting right next to me is it...that was fast. Still need control arms. I already have a whiteline steering rack buching set to go on the rack. The rack was 160$ at 65k...beats 540$ for 04 rack!

As for the motor...Got the heads off...sent to machine shop. They are done and waiting to be installed...just waiting on a few things from Subaru.

Why is that o5 rack so pricey compared to rack o7 rack? Is there a design change or wtf?

    Re: AssYriaNrocKer's 98 GT build

The 04 rack is actually the pricey one. The design of the rack changed in 05 making plug and play in other models impossible without changing crossmember and control arms.

04 is pricey because of the amount of aplications it could be used on i guess...

    Update!

Got the heads back from Phoenix Cylinder Head Service and installed at Wrench Auto Worx By Rich who is a good friend and a huge help!

Next was the intake plenum and spark plugs with all the new vac. hoses and gaskets. Grimm speed crank pulley on as well.

With the motor pretty much ready to go it was time to remove all the steering components. Oh what a joy it was......Most of the bolts were cross threaded and trashed :smt009 still wondering how we are going to save the threads for the new control arms.

Felt like we caught a huge ugly fish! LOL

Here you can see just how bad the steering rack was leaking. Also compare the crossmembers.

    05 CM Installed

    control arms have arrived!

These will be going on tonight......Hopefully...idk about the threads.
Here is the 07 STI steering rack with the new Whiteline bushings.

Yesterday I got around to installing the RalliTEK Poly. Trans. Mount Insert Bushing. Comes with great instructions with pictures and grease. Couldn't be any easier. Here is a shot of the old mount VS. the new transmission mount with insert bushings. Old mount was completely ripped in half! In the first pic you can see the grease syringe and in the second photo you can see how easy the instructions are.

Tonight hopefully we can get some more of this stuff installed.

Got a couple little things at the junkyard this past weekend as well. New visors to replace old torn ones, Heater control to replace the one with sticky buttons, the brackets to hold up the stereo instead of it moving all over the place, and yet another cup holder which I'm hoping will finally be the correct fit.

    Re: AssYriaNrocKer's 98 GT build

    --PROJECT DEJA VU UPDATE--

    lol

    -MOTOR-

Motor is in and sounding great! We had to change the exhaust manifold due to the fact that it was hitting the cross member, which thanks to a member on Nasioc was no biggy. Imitation Borla header 90$ = perfect fit = The Group N motor mounts really hold that sucker down. Very minimal motor shake during start up.

    STI pitch mount in.

Here is a shot of the old manifold and new for comparison.

Chop off the UN-necessary STI studs on the cross member and the new header fits like a glove.

    -SUSPENSION-
Steering rack is in without issue. Had a good friend weld together the 2 joints I needed on my Steering joint, which came out perfect. Thank you Nick!
    The un used STI portion

    Frankensteined together and installed.

Next we went to get the ball joints in and guess what...we broke our spindle! One too many love taps and next thing you know it falls apart on ya... What are ya gonna do...you have to move on. Used spindle from Precision Auto Parts 45$ and 1 day later we were ready to move on...or so we thought. While trying to get the JDM STI control arms on we realized that the threads we thought we saved are not saved at all... the bolt just spins and spins.... So that is where we are at right now. Literally 4 bolts away from Glory...
Here is the used spindle installed.

A shot of the STI ball joints.

Here you can see the bolts we pulled out and the new bolts I pulled at the junkyard. However even after chasing the threads where the bolt goes there is no use...they are trashed!

Here you can see the rack installed with the cross member and exhaust.

Something else I picked up at the yard was a window gasket for the driver side rear window. It had a dent that was an eye sore...

From here we all that's left to do is save the threads get the control arms on and go for a drive! Easier said then done...we are still debating which method to use on saving threads.

So close but yet so far...."Deja Vu"!

    Re: AssYriaNrocKer's 98 GT build

    Thanks guys!

Not as meticulous as I would like to be but it's as meticulous as I can afford to be. lol

    OOOOkay so....
Those damn threads where a pain in the arse! We decided to take some advice form a well experienced member on NASIOC and man I'm glad we did because it worked like a charm.

Step one was Drill through the old threads using a 33/64 drill bit....finding the bit was half the battle! 33/64 was the next step bigger to the hole. So it was bigger without being too big. Thank you Fastenals for carrying it in stock.

Next was making our own threads using a 9/16 fine thread thread tap.

final step was the bolt.....another unbelievably hard thing to find for some weird reason.(in grade 8 or higher that is) I was forced to order a box of 25 from Grainger! uggghhh

In the end it cost about 60 bucks to fix the threads but sooooo worth it. Got the JDM control arms on and went road racing!!!!!!!!!! OK not really.......went around the block and instantly realized the used spindle we had picked up had a bad bearing...of coarse. We were all a little excited about getting the car drivable so I haven't taken any pics yet.....but here is a shot of the bearing and seals if anyone needs the part #'s.

Right now I am taking of the spindle (for the 1.5 millionth time) so Fatgc8 and press it in for me at work. :smt026

I'm getting quite familiar with my front end suspension parts.lol

We shall see where things go from here. Thanks for all the comments and to everyone following! This build is by far my funnest....and most expensive...lol

    Thanks Zangado1.

Upon removing the hub we discovered a few gouges and decided we didn't want to chance it leaking so decided to replace the hub with a new Subaru hub. So new hub and bearings are all pressed in and ready to go. So noooowwwww I will actually get to install this damn thing.

Curious as to how the rack works out for you. Been wanting to do this forever since I have most of my suspension done.
