Deads 94 Toyota truck Headed for retirement 3-19-16

Ok, so I felt it was time to do a thread for the little Yota... I do have 8 cars/trucks as of now

So the story of this little truck is kinda cool! I was just starting my new small mechanic business and need something for getting parts and the BD was not the right car for the job. No picking up V8's with that thing! So I hit Craigs list...

After a few weeks of looking for the right rig and about to give up, I accidentally found this 1994 Toyota pick up listed for $300. I thought "thats gotta be gone by now, the add is 2 hours old"... I sent the guy an email, but didnt expect much. I got an email back and he said he would give me a call when he could and then also asked why I mentioned God in my email (it's in my signature and everyone gets it). I just said I he has helped me lots and I tell who I can and sometimes even forget its in there.

He called the same day and I asked about the body, he said it was solid. I asked about the motor, he said it ran. Then I asked why it was $300 and he said "it needs a transmission, but I'm not sure yet, I'm having the shop look at it". I said I would come get it that day and had the cash and didnt want someone else to get it. He insisted that he wanted it checked out. I said ok..

2 weeks later I was about to give up on this guy selling me his truck and I get a call... (when did you want to pick it up? They say it needs a clutch of a trans... Just wanted to make sure it wasnt worse then that." I told him I would be there in an hour. I hooked up my trailer and drove out to get it. I looked it over listened it to run. It needed a timing chain kit (sounded horrible, but typical of 22RE's but still a good motor), the body was solid other then a rusted bumper and minor body damage on the front end.

Now here is the cool part. This guy got it bran new in 94 in Maine. He was there for 2-3 years and then moved to Seattle, so it missed out on most of the rust problems. It had 339K original miles on her! NEVER had the motor out! Had a canopy already and I needed one. He told me that he felt it was going to a good home and he liked the fact I have faith in God (sorry if you guys feel this is preaching, just part of the story). I told him I would give him updates on it and that it was going to a good home.

What was wrong with it.... ? A cracked clutch fork, cost of $26 from Toyota and 1 days work!

Ok... I talked way too much...

The truck is a 1994 Toyota Base model standard cab, 22RE 2.4, 5 speed. The only options it came with was carpet and a rear slider. I have had it since March 2010. She gets 22-27 MPG all the time! Better then my BD!

    Motor/trans:
stock: new timing set (broken guilds, typical), plugs (they were really bad!), cap and rotor when I got it.

    Body:
92-95 Toyota 4Runner front end conversion
power SR5 4 Runner mirrors (not wired yet)
    DLX/SR5 doors... different style mirrors...
Replaced rear OEM rear bumper with Chrome and also hitch.
    Jerco Canopy
Yakima Control tower rack (bad ass! I love this thing!)

    Wheels and tires:
15" 1990 Jeeps mesh wheels custom painted by myself(moderns) with Fuzion HRi's (frist setup)
Skyline GTS-T 16" wheels... crappy tires... 1-1/4" spacers (current setup as of Sep-12)

    Interior:
    94 4Runner dash conversion
94 tilt steering column with intermittent wipers
94 Limited Leather 4Runner steering wheel
    SR5 interior door panels
    SR5 instrument cluster
    SR5/4Runner map lights
    Kenwood head unit
2 Pioneer 4" speakers (not a rocking system like the Leggy.. haha)

    Day I got it!

    Yep... Gotta love 22RE's!

    Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck

    After about a week...

94 4runner bumper installed... and some KYB GR2's...

    The part that was broke!

    LET THE MODDING BEGIN!
Dash and column swap was first...

The differences... My dash was hard plastic and looked cheap. The 4Runner dash had some what of a pad and looked much more... elegant I guess along with the glove box having a lock, lower center pocket, easier stereo removal, and just looed better to me.

    Old dash

    New dash

New cluster... for some reason I still cant figure out why the tach does not work. Might be thats its from a v6 truck, or that the truck didnt come with one, I'll figure out out some day.

    My $16 Ebay Kenwood!

I have a soft spot for these as I had a 90 Pickup and a 91 4Runner. If you're going to keep those headlights, and not go to the composite style, I highly recommend on getting e-code Hella 6054 glass. One of my all time favorite mods. The US Hella conversions are great too but the e-codes have better beam pattern.

    Time for new shoes!

1990 Jeep Cherokee wheels! Custom painted (dont thin I will even do another set of meshes like this again! What a PITA!

Fuzion HRi tires.. got the wrong size so they are a little under sized...

And without the canopy! I take it off once of twice a year... Fun as hell to drive withit off, by my MPG goes done since I drive it like I stole! haha

    Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck

Ok now for some of the odd stuff...

    Time for a new bumper...

New parts! Pick and Pull FTW!

Yakima Control tower rack! So worth it! Most the time the cargo case is on my Leggy when used... also a good investment.

And she hauls a lot of crap!
Filled even the cab with scooter tires from a rental I cleaned out for my old boss.

Sorted scrap for those days I have nothing to do...

And just scrap... most the time in my GMC, but she did fine this load...

    Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck

Last post for the night... I think..

    The door project...
I cant stand the work truck mirrors, they are ugly as hell and a PITA to adjust!
    Got these from a friend...

    Cut-ins all painted!

I will have more pics tomorrow on the doors. I have one installed and just painted the other one today... I'm just butt matching the paint, it's a work truck so I dont care much how well it matches, the fenders dont anyway... haha

Oh, these are the wheels that will go on when I get spacers...

I have always wanted one of these to build as a mini truck. They just have nice lines and I have loved the 22RE since I had my first Celica.

I'm sure you saw it by now, but I did the composite lights on the front end. I like the look, I just need the right wheels to go with it. I'm looking for a midp90's body kit for it. They used to make "lip" kits for them, but they are even hard to find pics in old mags. I'm not doing too much more to it. I just found a 92 Hilux Double cab in Canada that I might be getting the cab and box from. If I do I'll build another one on a different frame and this truck will go away, but this little truck has been excellent!

Oh! I forgot! Every now and then I send the guy emails so he can see his truck got a good home! He is still amazed at how much it's change and it makes him happy!

Very nice. My buddy (Rubie25_GT's uncle) has a lowered 90 truck. It was his toy until he got a 944. I may have a picture or two of it.

Such a cool little truck! It's incredible with how interchangeable the Toyotas seem to be.

    Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck

The cool think about Toyotas IS how much they can be swapped around! Not to many makes are like that.

Finished my door swap! I didnt like the big ol' work truck mirrors so I got a set of DLX/SR5 doors and some SR5 4Runner mirrors. Also changed up the interior door panels as well! They have pockets and they are fabric not plastic...

All I've found on my 94 is how terribly Toyota lays things out for mechanics and how well Subaru does things, lol.

HG's are a chore on the 3.slo's, and the suspension setup is kind of scary, but overall these older toyota's (especially the 2wd 4-cyl's) are cake.

Yeah, the 3.0 motors suck balls to work on and they are POS's.... I will never own one.

However, you cant beat the 22R's... They are one of the best motors ever made. As for the layout on Toyota's, they are really pretty good! My brother 98 T-100 with the 3.4 v6 is one of the most easy truck I have ever worked on. Subaru's are pretty simply though.

    Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck

Didnt realize I didnt update this... haha...

I got myself four 1 1/4 spacers to install my Skyline GTS-T wheels I had. I really needed 1 1/2 spacers, but I couldnt find any, so these will have to work. It think it look pretty cool myself. I do like the other wheels, but the mesh are for the Volvo anyway.

Old 15" Jeeps Cherokee wheels going bye bye! (To the Volvo)

    Hello Skyline wheels (16's)!

And the spacers... 1 1/4 inch...

I kinda should have got the spacers for the Mesh wheels also, but oh well...

Little better looking offset I think.

Did I ever tell you how much I hate my life right now? You suck for reminding me.... Carry on.
I'm in the process of trying to sell my car now, so I can get a pick up that I sooooooo badly need. After my 2 door removable top 4Runner, the choice was clear as to what my hunt was going to be. 4cyl Yotas are becoming so rare and scarce around here, and people are asking an arm and a leg for some heavily rusted/rotted out models. Keep up the good work... I might have to take a trip out there to go get 1.

Whoo Hoo! Post 3000! What do I win?!

Thanks guys! She's still a work in progress. If I didnt need to do work with it, I would think of airbags and a body drop, but alas, it's a work truck.

They are no so hard to find here in good shape. Most of the time they are just trashed. I figure I could sell mine even with the miles for about $4K, but thats only because of the updates and maintenance done. I've thought of getting another 84-88 4x4 so I can build another crawler, but I kinda want to build a Samurai also.

Let me know if you need help finding a clean one over here. that are out there. My dad has a beautiful 90 x-cab 4x4 with a 22RE that we got put together for about $4K a few years back. Got it with a blown clutch...

This is before I got him a canopy...

Cool build!! I just purchased a 94 single cab 2wd my self. First thing I did was intake/battery location swap. Started a build thread on toyotaminis forum. Front end looks great and so do those doors. Good work.

Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck New wheels/tires/spacers 11-21-12

Awesome work man, I love those trucks! You're right about the 22RE too, solid motor. It'll wind forever as long as you take care of it. The fact that it went that far on plugs/wires/cap and rotor for that long is a testament. Not saying that they were stock, but I bet they had over 100k miles on them, easy.
Wonderful job on the conversions, really nice work there.

Oh and I've always wanted those wheels for my MR2. Perfect size and look for a small car, interesting to see them on a truck.

Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck TOTALED! 8-16-13 w/pics

Well... I have a sad update for you guys.

My brother had totaled his 98 T-100 4x4 about 2-3 months ago and I was letting him drive my little Yota since I havent used it in a while and was about to put it in storage. Well, he got rear ended about 2 weeks ago. A non ENGLISH speaking moron pile drived the right rear with an 06 KIA minivan. It shifted him sideways and the front end hit a simi-truck trailer tire.... I have his truck here putting a new front end on it.

I'm now in battle with State Farm to get whats it's worth and they have been doing nothing but pissing me off with pathetic offers for my truck.

What will happen to it? Well, It looks worse then it really is. I plan to keep it and fix it. They are nt getting their grubby hands on my Yota!

Re: Deads 94 Toyota truck Rebuilding has began! 8-27-13

Today I started to rebuild the Toyota. Took the canopy off to work on the box and also pulled the fender. I grabbed some parts yesterday at Pick and Pull. Got a head light bucket, bumper bracket, and a light socket. I would have had a fender but they are way the hell over priced! $65 for a fender! Found another one the right color for $35, I just need to pick it up.

I also found a couple boxes also. I need to go take a look at them and then I'll head out and pick it up with my dads Toyota. I should have it close to finished next week or the week after. It's not that much work, or even time so it should go fast.

Just noticed the dealer imprint on the tailgate from your first post-she hails from the berkshires-nice area of Mass.
