Harry Maneuver's 06 Forester XT - Mrs. Fancy gets swaybars!

    So if you didnt hear:

    viewtopic.php?f=6&t=24668

Thankfully the pops was able to meet us up in Yreka and tow the legacy back home on a flatbead:

So as of tomorrow AM... I am officially shopping for our next subaru!!!!!!!!

It is going to be something below, in order of my current interest in it (without driving one yet):

    1. Subaru Baja or Baja Turbo - Currently in the top running because it has a lot of cargo space. I have found myself loving the wrx wagon and the space it has in the back... but there are plenty of times where I wanted to put something in there that I didnt want in the interior, even with the cargo liner. It also has a passthrough rear seat area that opens the bed of the Baja to the rear seat. LOVE the look of these... especially this:

    2. Subaru Legacy/Legacy GT Wagon or Outback/Outback XT 2005 and up - Would have to be a limited at the very least if not a GT limited. Like the creature comforts and overall sleekness of it. Also like that the automatic is the 5eat with manual shifting. Not sure what the main differences between the outback xt and the legacy gt are... besides finding one is gold seems to be easier for an Outback XT then it is for a Legacy GT

    3. Subaru Forester/Forester XT 2004 and up - I like the looks of these over the legacy GT, but they arent offered with the manually shifting automatic (to my knowledge) and they are REALLY hard to find in a MT Limited... these are the only reasons why it is number 3 instead of 2.

    4. Saabaru 9-2x - This is 4th because I just dont really know much about it other than it is LOADED with standard features like heated front AND REAR seats, Bi-Xenon headlights, two tone tuxedo leather interior, ect. It would also be nearly the same (space and engine size) as the 2004 WRX wagon that we currently have.

    Thoughts?

If your dead set on a new car, I would go for an 05-09 leggy. However you might want to also look at a 2000-04. They are nice cars as well and loved the one I had. Just good for thought....

I do like the 4th gen though... Might be my next one if my bd dies...

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

I say 05-07 Outback (XT preferred)
Get that and drop it to standard gt wagon height.
Reasoning is that this generation has, in my opinion, the best looking body with its front bumper with big fogs and those fenders. One at GT wagon ride height would be bad ass. I say go XT so you can Cobb access port it and turn it on the fly for more HP (+30 more) or even more MPG (I have WRX friends that have seen 35mpg).

Lastly. I reccomend that you go no newer then 07 for this and Legacy as the front end was tweaked with rounder headlights and I think it takes the aggressive look of it away.

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

Ok, I voted and posted with my phone, now reading on my laptop...

After looking at your BD, I would say fix that. Even more so if your going to start making payments on getting a new car. However this is me, I hate payments.

Any 05-09 GT/XT you need to see how well they have been maintained. I have a customer with an 05 XT with 135K. I did a clutch and seals at 125K among other things since about 75K... He drives like a grandma and almost never gets the car to boost. On the flip side a friends mom and dad has a 05 GT and they have had a new turbo, had a cat go back, and some other stupid crap happen, but they are not the best at maintaining. So get records on the turbo cars for sure!

Also remember, super is needed for all turbo cars so remember to factor that it in. Also you want to use a minimum of a senthetic blend oil with the turbo cars. You can use normal stuff, but it needs to be changed offten. Just things I have heard from other local mechanics.

as for what car. I really do love the looks of the 05-09 Leggy's! I dont so uch like the feel, but they are nice cars. I have not driven a Baja, but I would thik the inside would be just like a BE/BH since they are the same basic car. I like those also.

If you want a manual car, get one that way. Even if it's not a Limited, you can get the parts to make it one.

Personaly if I was going to get a new car to make payment on, I would go get a Legacy Spec B. I'm in love with those cars for some reason! Just an idea... I have been looking at one for the last couple months here local...

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

I chose 9-2x and Baja. Those're the ones least likely to have been hammered on.
Also, if you get an '05-'06 Baja, you have the awesome BT chassis with the BL motor (EJ255). How can you beat that combo?

I think finding a 5MT turbo Baja would be a challenge though.

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

Legacy Spec-B is going to be a garage kept baby... not a DD if it ever comes to fruition.

We are heading out today to look at these:

    http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/3120983944.html

    http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ctd/3119628555.html

    http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ctd/3098398933.html

    http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ctd/3102127424.html

I do think I will eventually fix the legacy... but this is my opportunity to add another new(er) subaru to our lives. I would prefer to fix the legacy without any time constraints... so having another perfectly fine and newer car in the meantime only makes sense.

The legacy is essentially going to be the camping car, logging/fire road exploring and possibly trips to oregon car. Anything that I wouldnt want to take the WRX wagon or our newer car to.

I'd go for the 05-09 LGT for sure, that's what my next subie will be.
1998 Legacy 2.5GT: Stock to turbo to stock, and given to my Dad, then to my sister that blew it up. Now I've repo'd it and it will once again rise to former glory!

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

Ok well we just got back from a dealership... looked at the saab, wasnt impressed enough to have a near twin to the current wrx wagon.

We also looked at an 07 FXT limited automatic in the color of my choice, metalic gold/sand color.

It had just been traded in and wasnt even smogged or detailed yet but it looks like a real possibility.

Also sat in an 07 outback limited, it was the two toned blue and gray. Liked the space and feel but didnt like the two toned paint.

We are looking at a baja later today to see if there is enough room, assuming there is, we will most likely be on the search for an 05-06 baja turbo as a first choice.

Ok so it looks like we are leaning more towards a Baja... the problem is that they are hard to find... the only one we can see within a 500 mile radius (turbo model) is a 3 hour drive away, is a manual which I like, but it is priced $2300 ABOVE KBB excellent value for a dealership...

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

My personal experience is that subes are inherintly more expensive in Oregon or Washington although they are easier to come by because there are more of them.

Someone who lives in the bay area most likely is not buying the subaru out of necessity for all wheel drive.

This is just my opinion of course.

We havent ran out of local options yet... if we do, we are going to expand our search area.

Going to look at a 07 FXT today and an 07 white LGT sedan just to test drive it. We are not going to end up with a sedan.

Ok so it looks like we are settling on a 06+ forester XT... in gold. There is an 06 with 90k miles and an 07 with 72k miles... both in gold with taupe leather interior.

Just working out the details on which one we want to buy... Might get the 90k one and have the dealer do the 105k service on it as part of the sale.

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

Quick question for anybody who knows the answer:

Is it not allowed for a Subaru Service department to look up a VIN to see if THEY (that specific location) preformed say the 105k service?

I have done this a few times over the last few years when shopping both for my Legacy originally as well as when I was shopping for the Fiance's WRX wagon.

I just spoke to a Service guy at Shingle Springs Subaru, where a prospective Forester XT was bought from. I could tell they sold it to the customer because it said so on the Carfax and the subaru owners manual sleeve had their card in it.

Service guy gave me all sorts of pushback claiming that only the owner of the vehicle can request that information to be shared. When I said "ok so I need to have the dealership that currently owns the Forester give you a call for that?"

He replied by saying that only the original owner (or whoever paid for the service) can authorize that information to be shared.

Anybody heard of this before or did I just get someone who didnt know what he was talking about?

it is because it has the PO personal info on it it is a way to reduce id theft. if work was done at a Subaru dealership it should be logged into their system so try calling another dealer to try to get the info. or you could call back and just ask to speak with the service manager and ask if the 105 k service has been done or not.

They should be able to at least give you the basics. I have even done it with some of my customers cars.

I would just say "All I would like to know is what has been done to it. If you dont want to give me the info, I guess I'll get the work done at another place"...

Re: I am officially shopping for a new(er) subaru this weeke

Well we looked at every 06-08 Forester XT in the Sacramento area and this is what we had:

    1. 2007 AT with 77k miles at Maita Subaru... no price was even offered because when we saw it, it hadnt even been cleaned or smogged... we waited a few days and Phil (salesman and also a member on here from back in the day) called me to say that it had a wicked idle problem and that they didnt even know if they were going to fix it or wholesale it. He didnt want me to pass on other ones when that one wasnt even in a known state.

    2. 2006 at Elk Grove Toyota for $14700 with 95k miles. 1 owner SUPER CLEAN inside and out. Only found 2 paint chips with no scratches on the exterior paint except for a couple on one mirror... nothing deep. Paint was glossy mirror like as if they had JUST claybarred and detailed it. Came with splashgaurds and subaru moonroof visor as well as a rear subaru cargo net. http://sacramento.craigslist.org/ctd/3102127424.html

    3. 2008 Private Party with 66k miles asking $17950 http://www.mota.com/buy/listing/2008-Su ... er/ma8cb3c It was really promising, on paper. When we went to look at it... the drivers seat had a VERY large rub mark on the side bolster... almost as if someone slid into the seat with maybe a pocket knife clipped to their belt. About 2 inches wide and 7 inches long. The whole topside of the leather was rubbed off leaving a grey area behind. The exterior had WAY more dings, scratches and paint chips than the 2006 listed above. The interior door panel clearly had dog nail marks on all four doors. The rear hatch had a few gouging scratches in it and the headlights were fuzzy (not like that is hard to fix). It also somehow felt smaller and lower to the ground than they 06 listed above.

4 and 5. Both unsmogged and not detailed yet. They were on the back lot at Elk Grove Subaru... both 2007's. Told the salesman to give me a call when they clean them up. Called 2 days later to say that one had 120XXX miles and the other had 140XXX miles.

As you might have guessed, we ended up with number 2!!! Final sales price was $13,600... not bad for KBB retail listed at $15,700.

This is going to be the fiance's daily driver as it will still get better gas mileage than the stage 2 wrx (which is now my DD!!!!!!)

The leggy is going to sit for a while until I find a great deal on an engine/tranny combo.

Kristin and her new "truck" haha

I get to roll with the sand/gold and black look!!!! I couldnt be more happy... the inside is FRESH. Getting all the AMSoil fluids/filters, and parts together for an initial tune up... just to give myself a starting point with things like fuel filter, plugs, air/cabin filter, ect.

Also getting a rear cargo mat and some floor mats for it asap.

Re: Shopping is DONE! 2006 Forester XT limited in the garage

Mods, can you move this to a Members Rides II section?

After a little bit of errand running today, I came home to notice the all familiar smell of coolant. Sweet, sweet coolant.

Wahoo!!! Looks like I will be installing that Tranny Cooler sooner than I thought!

    Parts ordered so far:

    - Autozone Spectra radiator with lifetime warranty. I had to replace the WRX's radiator shortly after we bought it. I replaced it with a Spectra from autozone and have been incredibly pleased with it. Even with outside temps around 105 degrees, the coolant temp almost never gets hot enough to trigger the fans and if it does trigger the fans, it cools down to 185 within 1-2 minutes.

    - Hayden 526 Oil Cooler with built in 9.5" cooling fan. Hayden Automotive 526 Remote Transmission Oil Cooling System : Amazon.com : Automotive

    - Hayden 209 Mounting system

    - Derale In-Line 180 Degree thermostat Derale 35020 -6AN x -6AN Premium 180 Degree In-Line Fluid Thermostat : Amazon.com : Automotive

    - 1 Container of OEM Coolant Concentrate

    - OEM thermostat

    - 1 case of Amsoil ATF (Pops is a dealer)

    - 1 OEM Subaru Spin On ATF filter.

    - Gates Racing Timing belt kit with water pump

So the gameplan as of now is to obviously replace the radiator with the new Spectra as well as a full coolant flush with new thermostat. While doing that, I am also going to plumb in the Oil Cooler and thermostat. I am wondering if I should be even more proactive and plumb in a temp sender for the inevitable ATF temp gauge in the Subtle Solutions Ash tray delete.

Car just rolled 96,XXX miles. I am just going to go ahead and take car of the 105k timing belt service items while I am in there.
