2000 Subaru Legacy GT Limited TURBO Project

My friend and I are aquiring parts to turbo his 2000 Legacy GT limited.
here are the parts we have so far:

    02 WRX turbo

    02 WRX TMIC

    02 WRX bov

    04 WRX Fuel Pump
05 STI Injectors and Fuel Rails

01 2.5RS JDM Turbo Manifold (STI RA)

Black Greddy Turbo Timer + Harness

Greddy Emanage, harness and support tool

What parts should i look into getting next? I'm not in a rush to put this all together so any input would be greatly appreciated as my friend and i are big noobs when it comes to anything turbo charged. We've really been trying to research this project and have been saving up a good amount of cash for it so please post up some helpful comments!

Here is a mod list of the car as it stands right now:

    Gripforce Stage 3 Clutch
    Fidanza Flywheel (9.5lbs)
    2.5rs Intake
    NGK Iridium IX Plugs
    Lightweight Underdriven Crank Pulley
Custom Cat back exhaust & Muffler
    KYB-2 Gas-ChargedStruts
    17" ADR Sokudo wheels
    Sumitomo ZR rated tires
    Bomz Short throw shifter

    http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2151204/2

Here are some pictures of the parts I have aquired so far. I am still looking for a hood scoop, and y-pipe for the intercooler. If I have any glaring mistakes in my list, let me know, thanks, and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Where should I get it installed? I'm in upstate NY, 5 hrs from NYC and 5 hrs from Toronto. Thanks

I've heard that Toronto has some good shops. I'd get an STi shortblock to go with all this stuff (1800 bucks new) because the Standard EJ25 isn't terribly strong.

You did eliminate the first weak point in boosting an N/A engine by getting the fuel rails/injectors, etc.

^^ Providing boost is limited, he'd have no problems with it.

Are you getting a custom exhaust system made up? You may have to, unless you decide to use a WRX one, and you may run into problems with the engine crossmember blocking the WRX exhaust.

I would try test fitting the STi RA one before you begin anything.
You might want to get some gauges.

Do a compression test on the engine too, just to give yourself a benchmark.

That's not how boost works though...once you get some, you only want more

thanks for all the replies guys. I have a good friend that is going to make my 3" custom Stainless steel exhaust. We're going to try for 7psi to start, and if somebody has the link to the STI shortblock, please post it here. Also, if anybody has been to a good shop in toronto that does the work cheaply and well, that would be greatly appriciated. For gauges, to save money, we're going to use a laptop with digital gauges at first (plugged into the emanage). We hope to get the turbo in soon.

    Very cool, man!

As for 7psi, you should be good, provided you do that with the new fuel system in. Watch the A/F ratio VERY closely the first few months, @ 7psi, fuel is going to be the danger to the stock block.

As for the STi block, I quoted you a dealer price for the shortblock (not the longblock).

    Here's a link as well:

As for shops...hmmm, GTWagon is in Canada, as well as BGWagon, and Cajual. Try PMing one of them.

we dont need a down pipe because its a TMIC, we do need an up pipe. The boost controller is in the greddy emanage. I dont know what we're going to do about the intake right now, and what is the crossmember.

yes, you will need a down pipe. It has NOTHING to do with the TMIC...it has everything to do with taking the exhaust OUT of the turbo and DOWN to the midpipe and out the muffler.

The UP PIPE brings the exhaust UP from the exhaust manifold, thru the turbo and the DOWN PIPE bring the used exhaust gases out of the turbo and DOWN to the regular exhaust system under the car....thus the DOWN-ward motion.

And the crossmember is the engine cradle, support member.
The black one is the type you want, it has the recess to allow the uppipe between the motor and the crossmember. The gray type is what you'll be taking out of the 00 Legacy.

Cars that have the 'Turbo Crossmember' are as follows:

    90-94 Legacy Turbo
    02-06 WRX
    04-06 WRX STI
    05-06 Legacy 2.5GT
    04-06 Forester XT
and the Baja-Turbo has it as well....don't know the limited run that car had.

Now, someone (I forget who, don't take offense) modified their non-turbo crossmember and welded a pocket or recess for the uppipe to fit in.

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking about using a flex up pipe and down pipe, but I was wondering if there were any complications with mounting brackets of the engine, or L-brackets that would block the up pipe, or will that engine cradle support member let it fit? thanks

should I just have a shop make both pipes, and will out exhaust manifold be a direct bolt on to the 00 legacy ej25 engine?

I would think you can use WRX or STi UP/DP assemblies that are pre-fabbed.

if you use a turbo cross member, and that exhaust manifold, any after market up pipe for a wrx will fit.

6psi only though, w/ a 14lb flywheel, using a greddy emanage ultimate. I'm not sure if the 9.5lb is too light for the NA 2.5...

Forgot to add, don't get a boost controller, especially a manual. Those things can be so finicky that a 1/50 turn of the knob can mean a difference of 7psi to 10 psi. Not good for the small window of boost our engines can take.

Use the wastegate to control your boost; is that turbo coming from a WRX? I thought the wastegate opens at 10psi...better check on that. Wouldn't want to overboost your engine even before everything is in place; look in rs25.com to see how to adapt a 5psi wastegate spring.

With a TMIC, it's going to be roughly 100hp over stock w/ a proper tune (so around 260 bhp, 212whp; out of the box it makes more than a standard ej20t swap and with a flatter torque curve due to displacement). That's the quote numbers from the AVO turbokit, which runs 6 psi I think.

6psi only though, w/ a 14lb flywheel, using a greddy emanage ultimate. I'm not sure if the 9.5lb is too light for the NA 2.5...

has that setup been run on a car before? that's pretty much how my old setup on my last legacy worked. The downside was that in that position I couldn't get the oil to drain from the turbo fast enough, the turbo wasn't high enough so I got constant smoking problems. The new setup has the turbo (60-1 T4) mounted in the stock wrx location and is a pretty damn tight fit.

I'm just wondering if you or whoever you got that setup from had the same issue I did with the turbo mounted that low. .... oh, and I'm guessing you don't have A/C?
