It has been suggested to me to do a whole Baja Turbo swap; Engine, Turbo, Sport Shift 4EAT and all.

I don't think it was ever clearly answered in this thread, but to answer conclusively... the Sport Shift feature on Baja and 3rd-gen Legacy is exclusive to specific 4EAT Phase 2, Version 1 transmission assemblies with a special Sport Shift solenoid. It might be possible to add this solenoid and the harness to connect it to the valve body, or replace the valve body altogether with one from a Sport Shift enabled 4EAT:

Seems you MIGHT be able to add the SPORTshift solenoid to your valvebody then change trans internal harness w extra plug for solenoid and phase2ver1 ss tcu. Or use phase2 ver1 sportshift valvebody/harness and corresponding tcu. Plus of course ss shiftee. Idk if it will work w.o steering wheel buttons hooked up or gear indicator display not hooked up.

But it seems you should be able to convert phase2ver1 non sportshift to sportshiftusing correct phase2 versiin1 4eat sportshift parts. Def can not use phase2vrrs2 stuff unless car originally had phase2version2 4eat.

Google image 4eat phase ii version I and look for diagrams of valvebody. Most show where sportshift solenoid can go and empty space on non spirtshift valvebidy

I chimed in on an old NASIOC thread on Sport Shift. My hopes of a straightforward Sport Shift transmission swap into my '98 BK were crushed when it was explained to me that the Phase 1 Engine & ECU will not talk to the Phase 2 Transmission and TCU.
However, '99 Legacy owners could take advantage of their transition year and probably make it work with their Phase 1.5 Engine/ECU and Phase 2 Tranny/TCU:

What is the difference between the '98 Legacy ECU for Phase 1 EJ25D, and the '99 Legacy ECU for Phase "1.5" EJ25D? If they are interchangeable, then maybe the Sport Shift TCU could be made to work in pre-'99 Legacy 2.5's?

My JDM Sport Shift assembly arrived today, It's pretty nice! So anyway I talked to the transmission shop just before closing, they took it for a test drive and agreed with my symptoms, which they described as "weird" haha. Tomorrow they'll take off the pan and have a look inside for metal bits. Seems like it could be a parking gear issue.

I was hoping to pioneer a Phase 2 Sport Shift into a Phase 1 Legacy, but I could only have the transmission shop stall for so long while I researched transmission harness wiring diagrams. They rebuilt my factory transmission and it wasn't cheap. The car is ready to pick up today. I did have them install the JDM Sport Shift gear selector, but I'll have to install an aftermarket TCU at a later date to enable manual shift features.

Well 2 LEGT is finally back on the road:

    Original TZ-series Phase 1 4EAT transmission rebuilt
(EDIT: It's not the same case, the bellhousing code is different than original code).

New differential clutch packs (there's going to be a bit of chatter in tight turns for a few hundred miles until they break in), solenoid assembly, banner kit, pump assembly, CV axle shaft, TransGo RE4R01A-HD2 Stage 2 Performance Shift Kit, new torque converter, and new external transmission cooler:
    https://www.summitracing.com/parts/t...Reviews=Newest

They put in my JDM Sport Shifter using my adapter harness for regular automatic gear selection:

Mark, the transmission shop owner/head tech, was pleased that the harness worked plug-and-play perfectly:

Clearly I need to come up with a better shifter surround, I'm thinking a bit of black neoprene. For now I've got a bit of black gaffer tape to cover the edges of the shifter. It looks awful, but hopefully not for long:

Later this summer I'll look into the Forced Four shift box setup and put the Sport Shift gate and JDM Sport Shift steering wheel to actual use:

I am trying to swap a jdm https://m.ebay.com/itm/JDM-02-05-SUB....c100890.m2460 trans in my forester and I was wondering how you swaped the sport shifter.

I'm hoping the one from a baja is plug and play. Which wires did you have to merge or did you run new wires to the tcu?

In hoping I can swap that trans into my 04 fxt, baja tcu and a baja sport shifter and get the vtd in there too.

How is your legacy and have you installed the stuff to get the gear selection?

Hi Pitman, my apologies at the tardiness of this reply... ONE YEAR LATER SL-I doesn't seem to alert me to forum replies, and Legacy discussions seemed to have moved over to facebook, for better or worse.

Sadly I have not advanced this project since my last post, other that I made a leatherette shifter surround that looks much better than the temporary gaffer tape as shown above. My Legacy was neglected for much of 2018 while I planned a major brake overhaul (which was finally completed early this fall). I still frequently think of completing the SportShift conversion but it seems there's never enough money left to invest in the Forced Four aftermarket TCU that I've had my eye on.

I hope you're having success with your trans swap.

Still I have not upgraded the TCU but I am occasionally asked how the SportShift gated shifter install looks. Here is the 2nd or 3rd attempt and is the current look:

Photobucket has gone full extortion with their photo hosting. If you are seeing blurred or blocked pictures, be sure to use a browser extension to see the images in context.

Here is the extension I'm using for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...-embedded-fix/
EDIT: I thought this extension solved the Photobucket problem, but in actuality it was the forum code that has special magic. Other forums still have blurred pics on my Firefox browser. In Chrome, however, the extension that did work for me is https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...alioapbifiaedg

Anyway, it seems that I never posted pictures here of the borked input shaft:

I installed a script on this forum that will scrape any new photos from 3rd party hosts and copies them to the SL-i server. It does this every 30 minutes or so. I did this way back when Photobucket did their first round of extortion. The script is written in such a way as to get around the photobucket limits, but it works on all other hosts too. The only thing is that if someone deletes a picture from their thread, it does not delete it off the server.

Otherwise, I do not think that input shafts are supposed to look like that.

Brilliant, sir! I wish you could convince all other forum admins to do the same because Photobucket has become PhotoPhuckedItUp.
