I have a 1999 Subaru Legacy GT which has the third generation transmission which makes it the bastard child of the second generation. So, I have come across a 2003 Subaru Legacy Outback with a 4EAT that has sport shift at the junkyard. 2003 introduced the 4eat with a sport shift option and VTD I believe. I am wondering if I can transfer over the shifter junk and possibly the TCU to convert my "technically" third generation transmission to sport shift capable. Is there anything else I would possibly have to transfer over? I'm trying to avoid yanking an entire trans considering I would think that Subaru would just program a different TCU to save money since it wasn't the only style automatic they sold at the time and sport shift is all in the electrical and not mechanical other than the shift lever itself...
Any insight on this would be appreciated! I'm going to go back to the junkyard to try and find it and yank out whatever I would possibly need. Also, will dismantle a 2nd gen while I'm there (since they're everywhere) and see what the differences are.
