So WHAT IF..... Sport Shift in a 1999 GT

I have a 1999 Subaru Legacy GT which has the third generation transmission which makes it the bastard child of the second generation. So, I have come across a 2003 Subaru Legacy Outback with a 4EAT that has sport shift at the junkyard. 2003 introduced the 4eat with a sport shift option and VTD I believe. I am wondering if I can transfer over the shifter junk and possibly the TCU to convert my "technically" third generation transmission to sport shift capable. Is there anything else I would possibly have to transfer over? I'm trying to avoid yanking an entire trans considering I would think that Subaru would just program a different TCU to save money since it wasn't the only style automatic they sold at the time and sport shift is all in the electrical and not mechanical other than the shift lever itself...

Any insight on this would be appreciated! I'm going to go back to the junkyard to try and find it and yank out whatever I would possibly need. Also, will dismantle a 2nd gen while I'm there (since they're everywhere) and see what the differences are.

Um... I am not sure what 4EAT came with sport shift...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Su ... nsmissions

From my knowledge... the ones that came in late 3rd gen AT's and Baja turbo AT's were a 5EAT with sport shift.

A picture of the vin from the car that they tranny is in would help. As would a picture of the shifter area.

Yeah, wikipedia is crap. It's an SS-4EAT according to the Subaru manuals I have. That also explains the 4EAT Sportshift Turbo Baja my neighbor has (which Rubie_25GT has seen).

So really it is a 4EAT with "Power Mode" not "sport shift"... is that what you mean?

I have never seen a 1st gen legacy with the + - shifting ability.

1st Gen? I am talking about the 3rd Gen sportshift. That's what Rubie_25GT was talking about. And they have a + - shifter.

    So it looks like this?

I guess I was mistaken to think that those were 5EAT's

It is this right here in this article:

    http://drive2.subaru.com/Fall02_2003Legacy.htm

I found it in an outback, which is just a gt wagon raised in my opinion. It was the woodgrain and all just like this interior. It was a 4 speed automatic. It blew my mind when I found it and i almost tried to walk out of there with the whole transmission lol Hopefully I won't have to do that.

I think you're on the right track. Sport shift is essentially bypassing the automatic shift control (which is done based on rev limits and throttle input). I would think that the TCU and the physical shifter mechanism would be enough... but you won't know until you yank it.

Honestly though, having an extra trans lying around isn't a bad idea...

Re: So WHAT IF..... Sport Shift in a 1999 GT

In addition to the sportshift, you could get the Japanese steering wheel that has the sportshift buttons on them.
I'd stick with the transmission itself being from the US though. That Baja turbo I drove was MUCH more responsive than the crappy sportshifts that were in the RSKs that I've driven.

Re: So WHAT IF..... Sport Shift in a 1999 GT

Its totally do-able. Infact ive been toying with the idea for my car.
My honest opinion for my set up ...just buy a aftermaket tcu.. Since no one elsr has done it that i know of there probably isnt much info which means there will be alot of brain damage.
Thats just the conclusion ive come to for my car. You may decide differently

RUBIE_25GT and I went through the schematics and came to the conclusion that it shouldn't be too difficult. It seems like it's just pulling the trans, TCU, and the shifter and then making all the wiring connections.

Yup pretty much am assuming a complete transmission swap would be in order (which is not too bad since it's just auto to auto). No luck at the junkyard today, but hopefully if I keep going back once a week I will come across a sport shift outback or GT.

I'm with you on that; although I'm curious about doing the reverse: would any VTD 4eat transmission (e.g. WRX, 3.0 LL Bean Outback) work in an '05 Baja Turbo with the sportshift feature? This is assuming the Baja Turbo came with VTD...

Reason I'm interested is because I'm looking at one with 205,000 miles, and I'm worried that the transmission would need replacement soon.

Re: So WHAT IF..... Sport Shift in a 1999 GT

As far as I know, the 4EAT in the Baja Turbo didn't have VTD. I think (I could be wrong) it was the 4 speed WRXs that had the system and then it was the 5EAT cars. The LL Bean H6 didn't have it either - that 4EAT was just a 4EAT and a lazy one at that (I owned one).

Someone might be able to say if VTD has to work with the rear diff but if it doesn't, than the proper TCU should be able to deal with a VTD auto swap.

    I think...

    BUMP...

I don't know much about 3rd gens, so I didn't know this feature was a thing. Found out about the SS-4EAT last week. With a BK GT wagon with 4EAT for wife's daily driver, I'd love to do this swap. So - SS-4EAT Trans, TCU, and JDM Steering Wheel with Sportshift buttons... is this what is needed? Center console SS-4EAT shifter as well? Feasible?

    I'd love any updates!

    Thanks!

It might be a little tricky, but I am sure it could be done. I must say that I do not know much about the JDM 2nd gens.. Was there a sportshift there for your chassis?

No, the '98 RSK and GT/GT-B (BE and BH) were the first to get the SS-4EAT, so swapping in the interior stuff to make it work may be a chore.

Yes it was your JDM wheel, Dead, that learned me about this! I think you posted before that the wheel has an airbag, but no charge? Is this easily remedied? Is there a special connector/harness for the SportShift controls? That would have to be routed from the TCU and up the steering column? Also, what about the USDM cruise-control stalk? Seems most JDM GT-trim steering wheels don't have cruise. Are the left and right +/- buttons both shift controls, or is one a stereo control? Could the center console Automatic shift selector remain stock USDM 2nd-gen, while still having the steering wheel shift buttons work properly? (I'm guessing no)...

If you still have this wheel when I finish all of my paint and JDM body conversion, I'll talk to you about buying your JDM wheel.

I have the same wheel. Mine too did not come with an airbag charge. I took a charge out of a 2002 Impreza that fit perfectly to the wheel and electrically mated straight up to my car, but I have a 3rd gen which I believe has a different airbag connector than 2nd gens.

The sportshift buttons use the wires used for cruise here. You cannot have both Sportshift and Cruise on the steering wheel with the normal clockspring as there are just not enough wires to do both (it would need 5 wires for both, but only has 4 available).

The Left and Right +/- are wired together, you can push either + or either -.

The airbag connectors are the same for late 2nd gens and 3rd gens. I have a 2002 BE airbag in my 98 BD. So that part is not a problem.

Re: So WHAT IF..... Sport Shift in a 1999 GT

I have a JDM Lancaster steering wheel with a USDM WRX airbag (the correct one) in my BD. No mods what so ever. I also had the stock USDM H6 airbag in it as well. No difference.
