    Sub-Goon's '97 Outback

I just bought mine at the beginning of Feb 2013 and love it. I've always liked Subis, driven a number of them, but never owned, til now! Thanks to Auto World in Fremont, CA for making the deal happen. It had 201k on it, but alot of recent work done before hitting the lot!

I have been a big fan of good looking wagons, since my days of racing autocross Datsun 510s. But I never owned a 510wagon. My user name comes from those days, Subaru-waGoon.

    I love that emblem!
This is a really nice car. How did you get your lights apart to black them?

Lots of DIYs out there... think I followed one I found on here, but I've done it to several vehicles, like my ol' '01 GMC Sonoma.
Bake them in your oven (while the ol' lady is out for a few hours!) at 200*F for 10-15mins. Be sure to remove all the bits and pieces first. Then just pry them apart, doesnt usually require much force. Once you are done inside, put them back together and bake again, once cooled, add RTV sealant to keep rain out! And dont remove any of the factory sealant.

Thanks! I wish I hadn't chipped the emblem and I found out the hard way that Carb Cleaner will create fractures. But thats also why I went ahead and repainted it after chipping it. Next one I will use the awesome orange oil stripper!

You and I have the same roof basket. I found mine at a pick and pull on a Range Rover. It was 50in x 50in. My friend and I cut it down to 50in x 38x.

I used acetone nail polish remover on mine. If it makes you feel better, those fractures were probably already there. Just something old emblems do.

Yep! I noticed yours as well. I had mine from my previous truck, but it is a bit wide. Mine is currently 45"x59" and I have been considering chopping it and customizing it a bit. I think I want to put the Subaru/Yakima bike racks on either side. I will probably cut it down to ~36" wide, which is the outside measurement of the roof rails.
I am also playing with the idea of mounting lights on the rack, my hesitation is I'm not comfortable with running the wiring thru the roof! If I do that the bottom will be shortened by ~6" and the top will get bent up at a 15-30* angle. By doing that the upper bar will provide tree limb protection and it will look more like a Safari or Baja Supertruck lightbar. Similar to this one:

I have (2) ProComp 8" 130watt lights from my old truck, which I am not a big fan of, but they are free! And I'm kinda thinking going with the lights from my moto, which are 3" round LEDs, brighter than the ProComps and only draw ~50watts each! But they run $100 a piece, so that will be a while down the road!

I tried the nail polish remover and Qtips, but it didn't seem to do anything! Did you pool it in there and let it sit or what?

I just dipped the q-tip in acetone and scrubbed for quite a while. It's the most precise method, but time-consuming as hell.

Yep! Thats the one and how I found them!

When are you coming down this way? Where are you coming from? I frequent both Emeryville and Alameda. Let me know if you want to meet up for a coffee and check out cars... I'd love to see yours in person! I dig the dark green & purple! Maybe see if we can get a few cars to show up some evening?

    Re: Sub-Goon's '97 Outback BG9 - 2tone Reduction

I keep seeing the beautiful front fender lines on the BD and the Lancaster models and thinking I wish my fenders looked that nice! It took a while of comparing pics to my fenders and eventually realized that the 2toned arches were detracting from the shape of the fender. So today I decided to wash the car and had extra time afterward. So I pulled out the stuff I needed and got started on the right front fender. Parts of it were a nightmare, as the sun had broken down the strength of the vinyl.

The flash shows where the vinyl was more than you see in normal light, plus after a few dirt roads, a few washes and some sun time, it'll all blend!
Took about 2 hours to do 2/3 of a fender, I'll do more tomorrow.

    Re: Sub-Goon's '97 Outback BG9 - 2tone Reduction

Spent another 4 hours on the car today.... finished removing the vinyl on the right side, then I washed the right and polished the whole right side and hood with Meguires Polishing Clay. Then a wash of the entire car and waxed the right side. I'll finish the job tomorrow, but it already looks so good!
These pics are from before the wash or wax!

    Re: Sub-Goon's '97 Outback BG9 - 2tone Reduction

I've been itching to do something with the wheels, painting is what I can afford right now. I'm not a fan of the tuner all black look, but I might do black with the aluminum bead. I also have a couple cans of Gunmetal Metallic, which I am leaning towards with the polished bead! I've always loved the WRC look of gold or bronze, but I don't think it will look good with the grey metallic 2tone.

My long term thoughts are, Legacy GT Snowflakes, like:

And I found someone who has '03 WRX twin 5spokes for $80, but they will need tires, but I need tires in the next 5k miles anyhow

This angle shows what I was meaning about the "beautiful fender lines"! Reminds me of the early BMW M3 flared fenders from the '90s.

I think it looks way better now!

    Re: Sub-Goon's '97 Outback BG9 - DIY Gauge Cluster

Between a few things going on today I had some time and decided that the gauge cluster needed a cleaning. And that snowballed into more work, like I usually do to myself! I decided to remove the blue gel covers from the 6 illumination bulbs, added aluminum tape to all the baffles that direct the light and I also added bulbs for the "Hi Height" & the 2 "TCS" lights. That's also when I recalled that my Dad's '05 Impreza n/a had a silver foreground/surround on the gauges. So I pulled it and grabbed a rattle can of silver and hit it with a few coats and then reassembled the whole thing. Wish I had remembered to pull the steer column apart, as I ended up making a couple marks on the new surround. I was able to touch it up so it doesnt stand out quite as bad, but its still there!

I'm thinking a nice little STI logo would look nice! I wish the KPH gauges also had MPH, I'd rock those! Hell, I still might, but I'm not the only one to drive this car. If only the faces were in the same scale, then we could swap the face and have the odometer in miles! I keep seeing these pop up! Wonder whats up with the redline 500rpms later on the JDMs!?

Here's the Low setting on the dimmer:

    And High:

Very easy to do and reads well, the numbers are a softer green, which I like. Thinking in the future I will swap in white LEDs from SuperBrightLEDs.com

When are you coming down this way? Where are you coming from? I frequent both Emeryville and Alameda. Let me know if you want to meet up for a coffee and check out cars... I'd love to see yours in person! I dig the dark green & purple! Maybe see if we can get a few cars to show up some evening?

I was planning to go this weekend but got canceled. I'm coming from modesto. Yeah man that would be cool, theres alot of us norcal members but no one really meet up lol. We might go hiking in lake chabot this wednesday and maybe meet up after if you have time. I may not take my car cause its pretty low and can only have kids on the back hehehehe. No more purple on the wheels, got over that phase. We went for a drive today to monterey but ended up in salinas and had to come home cause it was getting late.

I'll PM if we really head that way this week

BTW good job on taking the vinyl out . I tried it on my outback and its time consuming. So I gave up lol. I'll just use a palm sander to take em out before I paint the car

It sure does! What color did you do? You should put a link to a MR1 thread in your sig line!

Sure, let me know! My schedule is kind of crazy right now, the lady is in Oregon and I've got the kids full time, they are HomeSchooled, and I'm supposed to start a new job at some point this week!

Thanks guys! Some areas were difficult as well, but I found more heat with the heat gun and more soaking with the adhesive remover did great! Altho, my thumb nails are shorter now!

They used the vinyl to cover up the fact that the factory did a bad spray/tape job for the color transitions in order to save time. So the wheelwells don't look as good as I would like! But I did a little test and they sprayd the grey over the greens clear coat! So I was able to remove the grey fairly quickly on a little test section with a green ScotchBrite pad. So I'm hoping to get all the grey gone around the wheelwells in the coming weeks. I will probably have to throw a bit of clearcoat on it when I'm done to get the shine back. Fortunately and unfortunately, my car has scratches all over it! I wish it looked better, but with the scratches, I'm less worried about what I do to the paint!

    I used Rustoleum satin nickel.
My computer is screwy so I typically check the forum on my Xbox and can't cut/paste. Sooo links are pretty tough.
