1996Battlewagon's 1999 Jeep Cherokee (DD Status)

Here's the new DD. I had one in highschool and for the past few months, I have been lusting after one pretty bad. I found this thing in March and it stayed at the dealership the entire time. Either it was meant to be or no one in South Florida wants a real SUV.

It's a 99 Sport with a NP231 transfer case, 4.0 liter with less than 130k miles and here's the kicker, a 5 speed manual. These things are rare and it seems solid - last year for the distributor engine, the best t-case and one really cool trans.

Because the truck has been sitting for so long, I'm looking to perform a basic tune up and then get the tires balanced. After that, plans are for more loud (Banks header, Vibrant exhaust), better tires (Geolanders) and a small budget lift. I'd love to get a pre-runner style bumper too.

Yeah, you're probably right. It's funny just how much different two places in the Southern region can be. Back in Tennessee, this thing would never even have been for sale. I'm just looking forward to getting it and myself back to the 865.

The Jeep's still the DD which is good because my Outback decided it didn't want to have a driveshaft anymore.

So far all I've done to it is a proper tune up and added an legit K&N Cold Air Intake.

Re: 1996Battlewagon's 1999 Jeep Cherokee (DD Status)

Ha! Nope - better than a Landrover. They're factory Cherokee axles aka Dana 30 high pinion and Chrysler 8.25 29 spline. Basically, they are exactly what are underneath my XJ right now but with the added benefit of 3.55 gears vs 3.07 gears and a locked diff for rear. This will be so much better for oomph when I get the 3.5" lift installed (this weekend knock on wood) and larger tires.

Re: 1996Battlewagon's 1999 Jeep Cherokee (DD Status)

Got her lifted and axle swapped. She still needs an alignment, brake job and a once over so I took her to a shop this morning to get it checked out. This took me three days to do and I will never do it ever again.

As of now, she looks a bit silly with her 235/75R 15s

Why never do it again? Besides rust issues (totally rebuilt spring hangers and half the floor) I found the lift on my XJ simple.

I spoke out of frustration really due to the situation I put myself in. I rented a shop to do the work myself because I live in an apartment and that caused a rushed panic simply because I was being charged.

In retrospec, it was a stupid decision but meh - it's just money and the life lesson is worth its weight in gold. Next time, I'll wait until I live in a place where I wouldn't have to worry about time constraints.

The lift install itself wasn't a big deal, it was the axle swap which took the most time. Then when I got it inspected yesterday to have an alignment, I find the wheel hubs to be shot, the ball joint and u joints bad, and the steering links worn. Oh well. I'll get her back soon enough.

Got new shoes - Treadwright Guard Dog MTs. These things may be retreads but they're pretty dang cool. And mostly recycled. I also got a double shear track bar. Thing corners like something that shouldn't corner the way it corners.

Went wheeling in the Everglades recently too.

Plans as of right now are to keep her running. I'm trying to save money to get out of Florida and back into the mountains. My Outback is in Tennessee right now and the two miss each other.

Haven't done much to her. Replaced the injectors with some more efficient ones (averages between 19-20 mpg now) and just maintenance stuff. I drive it like an old lady most of the time. Every once in a while though...
