Got myself the Fuzion Touring tires. They're quieter than whatever crappy Wal-Mart special I had on there before, but they actually feel a bit less grippy.

Anyhow, I just took a roughly 700 mile trip to Vermont and back (this includes driving around up there.) The car proved it's gutlessness on some of the back roads over mountains up there, and developed a loud clattering noise for a while, which seems to have self-healed. I think it may be a sticking lifter, as I was careful to check on my oil consumption (drank about a quart of oil in 700+ miles of topping up regularly,) and it had enough when it was making the noise. It also had a few moments starting up hills where didn't seem to want to build RPMs under load until over 2k or so, at which point it would just accelerate like normal, despite sounding like I was about to throw a con rod through the block. But then, it just got really quiet and went away after maybe 50 miles of driving.

I tell you what, this car needs another gear for the highway.

Okay, in the last week or so, I got two new doors for the left side, thanks to Reason, our benevolent overlord. The front door was to fix the window, which had never worked right, and completely failed on my Vermont trip. the rear door was due to, what I suspect was someone's child whinging a door open into my car at Wal-Mart. Put a big old sharp divot in the door less than an inch below the bump strip. Had to swap the rear glass from Reason's sedan glass to my old wagon glass. Also discovered that 1995/96 doors and 1997-99 doors are not the same. I've taken to a bit of hammering to fix the fitment issue. The later ones have an extra pin in the lower part of the dogleg and the doors have a corresponding slot to accept it. that slot bulges out slightly and the dogleg has a recess around the pin. this will cause fitment issues.

Also got JDM power folding mirrors from Reason. Gotta get the bases and glass swapped out on them soon, because I go cross-eyed, looking into the convex "passenger" side glass.

More recently, I had the oil pan replaced, so I can go to the Rhode Island meet and not leave a big puddle.

Next fixes planned for the car: Windshield (still) and lifter tick.
Next mods desired: Some kind of lower, stiffer springs. Body roll on this car is kinda crazy, and I'd like to bring it under control.

So, the JDM convex mirror on the left side that was making me cross-eyed... it's kinda growing on me, actually. It makes backing up a lot nicer, as it offers a wider field of view.

I have one (a Broadway) in my F250... actually helps a lot with towing.

Well, guys, I have gotten myself into more car-related mischief. My beloved $200 BK shall be joined by a $200 BE. Just gave the dealership half today, and will be giving them the rest on Saturday for a black GT sedan. It's auto, has solid rear fenders and seems to have rear-ended a truck or something. The radiator support, grille, lights and hood are all pushed back and the front fenders are buckled, but the bumper seems untouched. I'll be doing a partial part-out of it, including the black leather interior, but nothing driving-essential. The dealer doesn't feel comfortable selling it as anything but scrap, and the title will reflect that, so I have no plans to make it roadworthy...

... but track-ready? Oh, that's another thing altogether...

Okay, nope. The BE is probably never gonna run again. It refuses to turn over, and it appears to have been run on water, rather than antifreeze, so there is a good chance the block is cracked. Supposedly it has transmission problems too. That being said, I will probably repurpose the bumper to my BK for it's fog lights, as well as the better condition snowflakes. The black leather interior will be up for grabs at some point, as well as most anything I can easily remove.

It also has a sub, amp, and head unit that I'll probably scavenge for myself.

Considering you paid $200 for it and with the parts that you're recovering, it doesn't seem like you made a bad buying decision. I paid $40 just for a used air filter box for my '97.

Very true. I am getting my money worth back, just in parts, then I'll add more onto that when I sell stuff and scrap the car.

I've swapped the Pioneer head unit into my car. I can't get the antenna plug to reach the radio, but it still plays CDs. And... And I can change the display colors. It is so fun to fart about with. Sound quality is good too.Name: 20170113_162025.jpg

Just had a read over the last year or two for this car... and my hats off to you muse, that is some mighty fine hodging and bodging on the panel work! I did have a good chuckle. We just do not see that here, that kinda rust condemns a car! (Illegal, fails warrant of fitness or 'inspection' requirements.)

Good to see the old girl battling on.

Oh, I assure you, if I'd the skill or the money, I'd have done some much more neat repairs. The bondo/foam combination is absolutely awful, but I guess it's kinda better than rust holes. I so wish I had the money to either fix this one or swap my stuff onto a better 1995 BK.

My muffler just fell off. This car has never sounded this badass or been this obnoxious. Parking it for now, I guess.

I ran mine for a couple of days without the muffler and surprisingly, my wife liked the noise. Muffler delete maybe?

Welp. I have discovered my limits. Currently stuck on a back road, with less ground clearance than the last vehicle to go this way. D'oh.

Well, I'm going to have to call it on this one.
My poor, beaten, battered Legacy is done. It's toast, it is no more a safe car to drive. The rot is claiming it, and I have no resources to repair it. The muffler fell off, and to repair it would require replacing the entire kludged-together exhaust system up to and probably including the rear catalytic converter. The brake lines blew tonight, and I am going to have to take it as a sign. Ivan the Terrible is done for. What a journey it has been, guys. I have had awesome fun in this car, and I have been terrified for my life in it. Plowed through mountains of snow and gotten stuck in way less than should be possible. It has been loud and raucous and fun as hell, and it has caused me innumerable headaches. This is by far my favorite car I have ever owned, and it is not the end of my Subaru life. But for now, I'm afraid I have to sink into the mire and the muck of owning nothing but a Honda, until that next Subaru comes along to claw me out of it with The Beauty Of All Wheel Drive. I'll probably do a bit of parting out soon, but I'm not gonna let go of too much until I know if I'm getting another BK/BG, or if I can get my hands on a BH

God above, I'm gonna miss this car...

Very sorry to hear about Ivan and that you probably won't be hanging out here anymore. I've really enjoyed your humor and although I've never met you, will miss you. Maybe stay here on MR2 with the Del Sol so we can keep up with your auto cross career. If not, good luck in everything you do.

Aww, that's too bad. It's unfortunate but just how it is sometimes. I know about the rot and just giving up on a car, too, so I understand. Hopefully you find another car to bring you back here soon. Maybe even a good deal on a 4th gen will pop up!

Well, hell. I swear, this car is like a bad penny. It keeps coming back! Decided to go ahead and fix it, after all. My many, varied, and profuse thanks to @Subafreak for his help on this one.

He ran a new brake line and welded up a most bitchin' exhaust setup, built out of a Hyundai Genesis aftermarket system.

The Del Sol is doing well. Exhaust is a bit... well, shot. And the seat kinda sucks. But it's still running strong and it's still fun as hell.

Well, it's been a while since I updated this. This thing just wont quit, apparently. After the last update, the brakes were still rather squishy, so the car sat for a while longer, until we could address the issue. In that time, a friend of mine hit it with a super cool paint job, and since then, I've just been driving it. I got a ticket for a noisy exhaust, back in October, and will have to fight it in court in July. the flange to the front cat rotted, and the bolts disappeared. It's mostly fixed, but its not holding together perfectly, so I'm going to hit it with some muffler putty and hopefully that will quiet it up.

Oh yeah, and the double-sided 3M tape that was holding the wing on stopped doing its job, so that got taken off... Oh, well. It was worth a try.
Other things the eagle-eyed among you may notice:
-Lack of a gas door. the hinge got bent and refused to swing open and shut easily, making it impossible to pop without someone else prying it open, so it got binned, and I haven't bothered replacing it because this car has been two months from retirement for the past 8 months.
-No more JDM sidemarkers. While it was "retired," I sold them off to someone who was quite eager to get some. I also sold him the cargo cover.

So, about a month ago, I spent the last money I ever would on this car. I bought, (For no other reason than to be able to say that I did,) a fuel door and hinge. It drove pretty well for another two, two and a half weeks, before a timing pulley decided to start making a noise like a rat being cut in two without anaesthesia. I got it home, and it hasn't been moved since. I can get the parts for about $120, but I fear that if I fix this, the next thing to break will be something a lot more life-threatening.

The car is telling me to quit before it hurts me.

So, here I sit, 1995 wagon dead in the water, 2000 wagon with a heart donor sitting in the back yard and no tools to do the swap but hope on the horizon. An out-of-work friend of mine is being my taxi for gas money and wi-fi access, and I'm counting my pennies, when another friend sends me a text.

"I'm moving to Colorado, the Subie is for sale. You get first dibs."

So, I will be picking up a $500 1998 Outback (I think? Maybe '97, maybe '99,) on Friday, the 12th. The day before the Rhode Island meet. This car is far from perfect, but it has been well maintained, and is leaps and bounds above the poor, neglected Space Unicorn. Some parts will be swapped over, others will be set aside for the BH. Mostly, I think it will be the winter car, to keep the rot-free BH clean and tidy. but, I honestly have no idea how to keep a car bone stock, so it will get a few upgrades. Possibly Legacy springs and tires, maybe one of my sets of snowflakes. Maybe the green hood, because that just seems to be my thing.

Well, that's all she wrote. I salvaged what few decent parts were left on her, and called the scrapyard. I made $150, and still have the cats to sell seperately. Damn, but this was a good car. She will be missed.

It's hard to imagine but 2nd gens. are becoming rare; at least in good shape, and one by one going to the scrapyard. I've been following your car for quite some time so I'm sad to see it go.

In my area 2nd gens are even become rarer in junk yards too. I very rarely see a 2nd gen on the road anymore.

I'd still driving my '99 if the dam insurance company let me have my car back-no rot-ran perfect.
