really annoying whining and grinding noise

alright, guys I have been stabbing at this problem long enough and I just can't take the noise anymore... It started as a whining noise at about 40 mph and then about a month back on the way home from Hagerstown MD It went to a grinding whining squealing bat out of hell kind of noise.

Here is a link to the vid I took of it.

It is driving me crazy. I did replace wheel bearings and it helped but not much.

Might have an exhaust leak coupled with bad bearing either in the diff carrier or tranny bearings, does the squeel sound with a constant tone or get higher when the rpms raise?

Dude wtf is wrong with u that's ur turbo spooling hardcore lmao.

On a serious note. That's really loud and harsh. Did u install a radio just recently? Could be a bad ground and u can hear the tranny noise thru the speakers. But then again it could really be a mechanical problem.

Also check the splash Guards under the car. Those tend to whistle pretty loudly as u pick up speed.

Re: really annoying whining and grinding noise

So it looks like it only happens when you are off the gas and without pressing the clutch right?

    https://www.google.com/search?q=subaru+ ... e&ie=UTF-8

I have something similar to this but not as nasty sounding. From everything that I have read it is likely to be one of these:

    - Aftermarket lockdown kits for the rear as well as upgraded bushings and mounts can sometimes cause drivetrain noise
    - Bent bracket somewhere, possibly where the transmission connects to the exhaust hanger if I had to guess. Check to make sure that still has a bolt in it and hasnt come loose/off
    - Bent rear diff outrigger plates caused by improper jacking... here is the plate I am referencing:

    - overtorqued crossmember or rear diff bolts
    - Bad carrier bearing for driveline.

Re: really annoying whining and grinding noise

on a serious note though. It only makes that noise when there is no load what so ever on the drive train. My brother yells at me all the time saying I am gonna get pulled over for speeding but I can't stand that noise at all! This car is completely stock. I was gonna get exhaust done this month but all the moneys been thrown at fixing this problem. I will put the car up and look to see if the exhaust is hitting or rattling. I had a super bad heat shield rattle this summer and took all the heat shielding off. How do I check the carrier bearing?

it gets louder the faster I go also. It I can hear a tiny grinding at around 10 mph and it gets louder and more pronounced as I get up to speed

Re: really annoying whining and grinding noise

Can you give us a bit more info as to WHEN this sound occurs? Does it happen only when you let off the gas? Does it sound like its speed dependent?

I had something like this on my vehicle that took me FOR-EVER to find out what was causing it. It sounded like a transmission grinding noise and would ONLY occur when i let off the gas, or the clutch.. and it sounded like metallic grinding and whining. It ended up being one of the bolts on the crossmember was VERY loose. I tightened that 1 bolt up, and the car was SILENT. i couldn't believe it! May want to check yours as well..

Re: really annoying whining and grinding noise

Sure, d1giPhux. It only occurs when I let off the gas or when I put in the clutch the same as your problem was.

hmmm, I went over the car last night and tightened up the transmission bolts to the engine. the bottom bolts were a little loose, I checked the trans member bolts, but they were not loose. The noise was still there this morning so I actually took the car into my mechanic today because I was fed up and I need the car for work. He is gonna diagnose it and call me today.

I am still leaning towards the hanger on the exhaust manifold that attaches to the side of the transmission... But we will see what the mechanic says.

Re: really annoying whining and grinding noise

Well, my mechanic told its my rear diff... harrymaneuvers, I did check all of the bolts you mentioned and non of them were loose.

They quoted me 400 dollars to put a used diff in and said it was fine to drive on it until I decide to fix it. apparently the ring gear is going bad. The noise changed on the way home and its more erratic it shakes the car too so I am not gonna drive it til I can get it fixed. It rebuilding the diff something I could do myself? I work on Industrial gear boxes part time.

fun fun. I have gone through the same thing.. except when my rear diff went bad it would make the car shake. Well, at least they aren't charging you too much! good luck!

Re: really annoying whining and grinding noise

So... easy way to double check to make sure he is right... pop in the FWD fuse and see if the noise goes away completely.

Its at least worth a check before you drop $400 on something.

Re: really annoying whining and grinding noise

Haha well yesterday my brother needed me to take him to work and I was like no if the rear diff craps out you are gonna pay for it, but he didn't have any other way to get there so on the way there the diff goes pop and now I am a fwd subie. But yeah, it was shaking the car like crazy.

Harry, I don't have that fuse in my car. It's a 5 speed. It's only for the eats right?
