DIY How to prepare Intake manifold for paint

Please excuse me if my DIY skills are not up to par and I have some POTATO cam pictures but I hope it'll help someone out there.

Well I guess first things first.

I AM NOT RESPONSEIBLE IF YOU BREAK SOMETHING OR DAMAGE YOUR CAR!!!

    ONWARDS

    Preperations

The most important part make sure you have what you need and the time to do it

For reference to anyone who wants to know this intake is coming off of a Phase II EJ25D on a Phase I long block
    Recommended Time:

Depends on how much time you spend cleaning. The more your clean the better the paint will stick and the better it will look

    Difficulty:

    :newb:

CAUTION you are dealing with fuel and Carb cleaner DO NOT BRING NEAR OPEN FLAME!!!!

    Estimate:

between 2-3 hours. (Once you already have the intake removed)

    Tools needed.

    Degreaser (I used Purple power)
Parts cleaner(The canned type) 4 or 5 maybe? your call
Wire wool, Steel Brush, Wire Wheel (Any or all will work)
    Masking Tape
    Desired Paint and Clearcoat
    Space Heater(if its cold)
    Cardboard(keep the work space clean)
Zip lock bags(for buts and bolts)
    Note cards(to label the baggies)
    PLASTIC BAGS

Remove said intake from your dirty nasty soot ash oil dusty and *!@?$!@?# covered intake manifold from your car at which point your engine bay should look as follows

and your intake manifold will look something like this NASTY!!!

Step 1: Find a working Place and set up all your tools

Step 2: Remove Rubber/Silicone tubing from PCV valve and Remove the 3 10mm bolts your ignition coil and hit the intake with some parts cleaner

Step 3: Remove 2 10mm bolts from spark plug wire holders pictured below

Step 4: Remove 3 10mm bolts from Back pressure Transducer of EGR system

Step 5: Remove 12mm bolts from ground terminal on intake manifold and remove PCV clean and replace

Step 6: Remove intake throttle body(12mm) and remove the idle adjuster on the throttle body(Phillips screwdriver) if you plan to paint both

Careful with the gasket if you want to reuse it

So dirty!!! But we'll take care of that

Step 7: Remove 10mm hardline bolts one up front as pictured one directly behind in the rear

Step 8: Remove Fuel Injector line anchors(12mm)

At this point ur intake should look as follows

Step 9: Remove the intake manifold pressure sensor (12mm)

Step 11: Remove Purge Control Solenoid Valve (12mm)

Step 12: Remove 2 8mm bolts from fuel rail line on both side and remove hardlines injectors and harness as one piece

BE GENTLE GO SLOW AND MAKE SURE ITS NOT HUNG UP!!!

Step 13: Remove 3 10mm bolts on Idle Air Control Valve

    Careful with the gasket

Step 14: Remove 4 O rings from injector seats find your favorite sink/dirty-able area and GO HAM with the degreaser parts cleaner and your favorite steel something

    LOOOOOK AT THE SHINY!!!!!

Rinse and repeat until you are happy.

Step 15: Setup paint booth MASK IT and Prime if you like

I chose not to prime as I did ALOT or scrubbing with the steel wirebrush

Step 16: Setup heater and pick your poison

    Wrinkle Black

How to use Wrinkle black: http://www.build-threads.com/general...texture-paint/

    Step 17: DRYING be patient

    Step 18: Final Product

    After 2 days of drying

Assembly is the Reverse of disassembly

    ENJOY!!!!

This would also be a great time to file off the ugly and sharp casting marks with a file if you like. Really cleans up the appearance of the manifold imo

Re: DIY How to prepare Intake manifold for paint

yo great write up. This inspired me to do the same. way cleaner than red/pink imo. So you just applied one thick coat and let it dry? That about one can of paint for the manifold? never used canned paint to do anything beside mark irrigation lines. thanks.
you are so adorable in your closed minded bubble of ignorance! I just want to smack you
