    Building my own "man cave"

Hey everyone I've been far from the forums this summer for a few reasons. Mostly work and practice for a show, but I'm also away for one big reason, particularly this week. I'm remodeling my garage that is behind my family's house. We moved here last year, and there wasn't enough time or money to teardown the walls and start over before the winter. So now I've decided to take my vacation time to finally make my own oasis for tinkering on cars. Today I did some clean up work, and ordered my sheet metal and lumber materials. Also began installing horizontal 2x4s so the metal has something to screw into. This is be a lot of updates right now, and over the next several weeks to months I'll upload pictures and what's going on in the garage.

Re: Building my own "man cave"

Yesterday I took off the plywood on the left wall, and discovered some termite damage. So I went back to lowes and bought more 2x4s to frame up the wall. We finished half the wall before dark. Today they were calling for storms, and I wasn't feeling well from yesterday's workload so I took today off. Here's some pics from the other day.

    After:

Also my metal siding and trim pieces arrived. Hope to be putting them up soon.

That is downright scary. Even the people who first built this garage (and they seem to have been drunk) did a better job then that guy.

So I had to stop working on the garage and go back to work. I'll slowly pick things back up after the next three weeks go by. But I'm proud of what I accomplished in the time I had. First time framing a wall, installing windows, and attaching metal and trim to a wall.

Nice job. The hardest part is getting things straight and level. Make sure when it comes time to put a door in, you get a very TALL door that is as wide as you can make it.

That's what my first idea, but then I found out that a 16x8 door costs over $900. So I'm getting a 9x7 door for $324 at Lowes.

Re: Building my own "man cave"

Finally got some free time in the evenings to work back on the garage. Started to knock down the rear portion of the right wall, and after two days I had to stop for incoming rain tomorrow. But hopefully this weekend will be very productive. Also had a family friend stop out to give me an estimate on my roof (leaks towards the rear). He said he'll put a patch in to keep it dry for a few years.

if you still got walls and ceiling open, I would put a reinforced section of studs and ceiling joists to strap a chain hoist too, you know if you ever need to pull an engine or something.

I'm not planning to pull any engines out in the future, but if I would I'd just buy a cheap engine lift.

Re: Building my own "man cave"

Well this week went off to a great start. Only issue is that there was rain forecasted today. So we went as far as we could this past weekend, and last night I hung a tarp up so the inside would not get wet. Hoping to finish the rest of the right side of the wall by this week. Then I can focus on the front side.

Re: Building my own "man cave"

One step closer to wrenching on the truck. Past few weeks I've been slowly framing and installing metal siding on the front wall. I'm waiting to get paid for a side job at work to purchase a garage door. But for now a tarp and some duct tape works. Just need to hang some lights and buy a torpedo heater before I start tearing apart the truck. Hoping its soon because I have a deadline set to debut the truck at the end of February.

Looking good chad. I hope you have some storage space for parts. Space always seems like an issue lol

Oh yeah, and flourescent lights are available at home depot for $12 per light and a box of 10 lights is $24...good lighting works wonders.

I already have lights purchased I'm just waiting on my electrician (my grandfather) to install them. And I have tons of space. I could probably park both cars in here comfortably.

So I cleaned and organized the inside of the garage. Made the right side my workplace, the back a "seating area" and the left is parts storage. My lights should be installed this week, and I'm getting two kerosine heaters to keep me somewhat warm this winter.

Thanks mjones. It's nice to have your own place to work in. Tonight I installed my lights, and I'm awaiting for my grandfather to wire them up later this week. If all goes well I should be working on my truck this weekend!

I might get the walls insulated, but I'm not 100% sure on drywall.

This past weekend I worked out in the garage with my kerosine heater running, but I think I need to find something that puts out more heat. Even on the fullest setting it still didn't change the temperature inside the garage.

Propane with one of those contractor tube style forced air systems works pretty well to heat up a big space quickly. It does get a bit smelly after a bit though, you don't want to keep it going once you get the temp up.

If you do insulation, you'd just leave it that way? No plywood or any kind of wall facing?

Might use plywood. Here's a picture of my NEW kerosine heater and my air compressor and welder.

Weird. My friend has a similar heater in his garage. It cooks the garage.

Something like that should heat the garage with ease.

It works ok to knock off the bitter cold. If I had insulated walls I think it would hold up the heat better then what it is currently.

Re: Building my own "man cave"

Insulate and you don't have to run the heater as much. You could always do spray foam, but more expensive but makes it worth it. Could be considered overkill for a garage but when you're comfortable you work faster!
