It will work. Both have a final drive of 4.11, so no other parts are needed.

There is some slight gearing differences
    1st Gear
    Forester: 3.545
    Outback: 3.454
    2nd Gear
    99 Forester: 2.111
    01 Outback: 2.062
    3rd Gear
    99 Forester: 1.448
    01 Outback: 1.448
    4th Gear
    99 Forester: 1.088
    01 Outback: 1.088
    5th Gear
    99 Forester: .780
    01 Outback: .871
    Reverse Gear
    99 Forester: 3.333
    01 Outback: 3.333

So you can see that that 1st and 2nd are different, but it's very minor so that's no big deal. The more drastic one is the 5th gear change. This puts you in a taller gear which means your highway cruising will be at lower RPMs and you will get better MPG. That fifth gear is the same one the Legacy GT was using.

Swapping to a tranny with the .780 fifth is a nice change in my book, I actually plan on swapping the fifth gear in my tranny sometime in the future to get a taller fifth gear for better highway economy.

The only reason you might not like the taller 5th gear is if you have hills around you that you can just maintain speed on in your current 5th gear, with the taller gear you will likely have to downshift to fourth if that is the case.

Oh, and both should be a push clutch and have axle stubs too, so those are compatible.
