    I miss my AC.

My car is painfully hot on a summer day in the south. The Midnight blue color and dark interior dont help, but the problem is mainly my AC compressor. I have no air at all. Today i was qouted $1,100 to replace it and flush the system. There has to be a better way. ( and by better i mean cheaper). I am going to get more estimates but is this what i need to expect?

replace the compressor? 1,100 sounds pretty steep.

I'd be tearin up the junkyards looking for a compressor. You're not supposed to do all that if you don't have all the certifications and all, so I'd say that's why it's so steep. You can buy the gauges and stuff to do it with...I'd say you could buy all the tools and compressor for much less, and do it yourself.

yeah. mine's having problems too. i tried switching the AC on and off while i look under the hood. If i remember correctly, the compressor whoudl kick on when you turn on the AC. right? mine just sits there.

i poked around a little online, and i the compressor alone runs something like $350.

anyone has any idea on how easy it's be to replace it?

Want mine? I want to take my compressor off. It works, but has needed an R134a recharge, and even though it's hot now, i still am not tempted to use it. If anyone can tell me how to get it off, I'll get it off for you. I'm in albany now, but i'll be in utica in like a week and a half.

You'll need to get a replacement pulley to sit in the place of the compressor. Other than that, it shouldn't be that bad.

Im not sure if you will need a replacement pulley. I dont have any belt running to my dead compressor now. The compressor has its own belt, its not a single belt design.

    oh, that's right!

I thought it ran on the same belt as the alt. The would be the P/S, not the A/C.

How is a good way to tell if it's just the clutch? I kinnda figured if the clutch burnt out the pulley wouldn't turn at all, but mine is free spinning. I got another estimate from a local cheap mechannic at $980... Now im thinking more along the lines of this. Homemade solar power fan

i dont wanna hijack or anything, but it's the same problem everyone else is having. My compressor makes a clicking or shocking type noise (weird i know) but the pulley is still moving. What could that be?

If you have a leak in your A/C system then the Low Pressure switch will not allow the comp. to turn on so don't just assume it's the comp if when you turn on A/c and it dosen't engage.

Dude, i know about no AC. last month i drove from Denver, CO to Albany GA, no AC. you talk about hot! It was hell. When i got here i started looking at getting it fixed, but like you, i found it was way out of the pocket for me. Then my dad mentioned to check the local tech school. I got a hold of them, bought a compresser from Subaru and got all the work done by the good kids at Albany Technical College. The compresser was $400, but the work from the college was $100! AND the teacher told me if i had any other problems with the AC or anything else to let them know. They were very willing to work on a Subaru, since there are not many here. They did a great job. Check it out.[/u]
