    Another engine question sorry

Sheepdog I read your article and it was very helpful. I just need a quick reply to this question and sorry if i am being annoying Im just not the most car savy guy. I found a sohc 2002 impreza rs engine i have a 1997 legacy gt that needs a new motor. I was wondering if The 2002 engine would need alot of work with the wiring or would the wiring from my car hook up pretty easy. The engine im looking at has the wiring harness and the ecu. So should i keep looking for a 96-99 dohc engine or go ahead with this engine. I have a local shop putting it in for me.

If I remember right, all NA subaru motors are plug and play. mark can verify though.

I know this won't help that much, but it will 'bolt in' to your body, but i'm not sure it will fit onto your tranny so easily. Any EJ Series engine can fit into any EJ series engine-carrying body.

They might plug, but without taking the entire system (ECU, sensors) from the 2002, they won't play. The 2002 Impreza is the Phase II EJ25 and has a MAP sensor instead of a MAF, as well as several other differences. You absolutely can swap in the engine, but you'll need to swap EVERYTHING over to make it easy (ECU, guages, knock sensor, o2 sensor, MAP, airbox, etc).

The tranny will be fine. EJ tranny -> EJ engine works in every scenario. EZ Engine -> EJ tranny even works. EA (early subarus like GL, Loyale, RX, XT) is different.

hahaha I don't want people to think I'm like a question nazi now. I don't have any problem with this kind of a question in the slightest. I really don't know much about the swappability for NA motors, however what mark said makes sense. I would wait and find something I know would work, and you'll pay less labor because they won't have to fiddle with it as long. Also, the motor would bolt in just fine mechanically to the engine mounts and transmission, I just don't know about the wiring.

What is broken on your current engine? Is it really so bad that you need to swap the whole thing and not just a short/longblock?

Yes, that was my thought too; why not just a shortblock?

if you can get just a shortblock do that, any series EJ25 shortblock will work with your current dohc heads, accessories, etc. So that sohc engine's block will work with your car with no modifications, if that is all you swap out.

He'd be going from a DOHC -> SOHC setup, with the higher comp pistons in the SOHC.

If the heads are warped, then he'd need those machined or replaced also.

If you do run a SOHC shortblock with DOHC, you should expect some detonation if you run 87 octane. You will probably have to run 89.

    I have a 80-90,000 mile EJ25 shortblock, SOHC, with 10.2:1 pistons.
I believe it was pulled from an RS-T and is in good condition. The head mating surfaces are clean with no gouges or marks.
I spent a lot of time polishing off any rust, and it has been sitting on an elevated workbench since then (soaked in WD40) - avoiding a cold garage floor.

It will need new seals, water pump etc. The oilpan has been tapped for a turbo return line, so you'd need to plug that or replace the pan if you would use this for a normally aspirated car.
    ------------------------------
I also have a complete set of DOHC heads from a 99 Legacy GT, these are in good condition - they will need to be stripped down and cleaned before re-assembly.

They have also been checked over, the cams turn freely, and stored in the same manner as the shortblock.

    PM offers or post here.
I can deliver to the Cleveland area.

I found a shortblock for my car but I do not know if my heads are in working condition or not so in a week or so I might be needing the heads. Thanks
