So the previous owner had swapped the engine to a 2.2 and I am not sure what flywheel or clutch setup he used. Was wondering if I order a clutch kit for a 2.5 if the pressure plate would bolt up to the 2.2 flywheel.

No it wont. 1.8 and 2.2 awds are the same. but 2.5 wont interchange, nor will the 2wd 1.8L
Buy the 1.8/2.2 clutch.

Whoa whoa 2.2 and 2.5 will use the same. If its the right years and we are talking na. We had this discussion before and I backed it up with matching part numbers. Also side by side pics of 2.2 and 2.5 clutch kits and flywheels.

This is what I figured. I will order the kit then. Stage 2 should be good enough for my project. Any of you guys know where to buy the release bearing for a car that has the repair sleeve installed? You are the man Reason.Originally Posted by Reason

I'd like to know as well I'm in need for a clutch and exedy doesn't have a performance clutch for my turboed bd(2.2)
The 2.2 flywheel is lighter, but you can get one from a 2.5 if you want. My 2.2 had the 2.5 clutch it turns out. If your turbo I'd just get a clutch from a 2.5, the surface area of the clutch disk is larger. Im swapping to an EJ205 so I too have to order up a new clutch. Just not sure what stage to order (I plan on hitting 300hp eventually)
You can mix n' match any PUSH type clutch.
- 22E flywheel w/ 25D clutch
- 25D flywheel w/ 22E clutch
- 251 flywheel w/ 22E clutch
- 22E flywheel w/ 251 clutch
and so on.
You can mix n' match any PULL type clutch (includes 5MT and 6MT)
- 257/207 6MT flywheel w/ 205/22T clutch
- 205 flywheel w/ 22T clutch
- 22T flywheel w/ 205 clutch.
You can use a 6MT flywheel in a 5MT with bellhousing modifications.
You can also you a 5MT pull setup (flywheel and clutch) in a 6MT.
You can not use a 5MT flywheel with a 6MT clutch.
and so on and so on..
FWD / 2WD clutches do not interchange in AWD setups.
Chance.. Do some research before posting please.

Chuck what would you recommend for my legacy setup? Dropping in the EJ205 as we have been talking about on facebook but I am retaining my original 97 LGT 5 speed.
You must use a push type clutch. An exedy stage 1 unit is more then enough to handle stock boost and some aggressive driving. Lightweight flywheel is nice but not needed .
Yeah I was thinking a lightweight flywheel, I plan on upping the boost eventually though. I was thinking I want to run 15-18psi (I'm building the block, so why not?)Originally Posted by chuckthefuk
Thats all fine and dandy but expect your transmission to start loosing gears or synchro's after some abuse.
These transmissions are terrible.. Many members/people/sites will tell you they are fine.. and sure they are however they are not able to keep up with heavy shifting, drivetrain shock and stress pulls
Even the 3.90/3.54 wrx 5MT's have the same problem.
The lightweight flywheel is a double edged sword.. Revs up quicker however it allows more vibration into the transmission which can cause premature failure.
In the end its up to you and your wallet.

Understandable, stock boost it should be able to handle though? I just want that highway pulling power. I've never launched my car and never plan to. I see some Wrx guys swapping to the 2nd gen legacy transmissions because of the gearing. I plan on eventually swapping to an STI trans and diff, then there is no worries of destroying it. Also I hear to not go below 13-14lbs on a lightweight flywheel because it can throw a CEL.Originally Posted by chuckthefuk
*stress pulls* as I mentioned before can cause failure. Its an unknown variable if and when it will happen.
Which STi driveline are you going to choose? 6MT or 5MT?
Lots of guys are after the 4.11 gearing but most go with the JDM STi 4.44 or the FXT 4.44 since the accel is awfully quick.
Some people report CELs with lightweight flywheels and a lw crank pully but this is not always the case.
If your building a budget turbo setup then the stock trans is fine just start saving for a replacement and don't curse Subaru when things start to fail.. This is how the game works :-p
-Chuck
5mt or 6mt whichever is cheaper haha. If I do swap to an STI drive train I want whichever one is more geared for cruising but if I am spending that kind of money I will probably just buy another car. I will never curse Subaru! Ive been borrowing one for a year now and it's never broken down yet (aside from the battery going dead last week).Originally Posted by chuckthefuk
